"He who knows and knows not that he knows is asleep; wake him." Anonymous

“And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake." Mk.13.37 ESV

Once we wake to the presence of God, our task is to remain awake. We are so easily lulled back into sleep. But imagine how our everyday interactions would change if we were to remain awake to God’s presence. We are truly awake when we are aware, not just to His presence around us but His presence in us. His presence within is actually more potent than if Jesus physically walked with us each day. The disciples managed to fall asleep when He was just a few feet away. But when the soul is awake to the Presence within, we may commune with Him even in our sleep. 1/25/2010 Conversations Within ts

“Time to get up sleepy head.”

“Wake up…” Rev.3.2 ESV

I believe that waking to the presence of God is one of the more difficult yet essential lessons that we must learn. One reason this is difficult is that until the spirit is awake and willing the flesh is weak. The reason the flesh is weak because it is functioning without soul—somewhat like a body operating without a brain. Our physical senses are constantly inviting us to interact with the physical world but until the soul wakes, our interactions with the physical world are only distractions to real world of the Spirit. When the soul wakes up, our eyes, ears and other senses are no longer distractions but can serve our interactions with God. When we wake to Him, we wake to Him everywhere. 1/25/2010 Conversations Within ts

“There’s more to being a Christian than just believing the right stuff, than just having the right doctrine.” Tony Campolo

"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. (Sermon on the Mount) Mt.7.21 ESV

We express faith in Christ in many ways and all of them important to our salvation. One is the simple transfer of trust-- when we admit that sin has gotten the best of us and we look to Christ to rescue us from its punishment and it’s hold over us. Very much apart of this transfer of trust is to believe that Christ knows more about the purpose of life than we do and so we walk where He leads us to walk. And where will His footsteps lead us? He has made that very clear. Whatever we do to the least of these, you have done it unto me. 1/22/2010 Conversations Within ts

“Love is the overflow of pleasure in God.” John Piper

“…every healthy tree bears good fruit…” (Sermon of the Mount) Mt.7.17 ESV

The fruit of spiritual health is nothing less than the presence of Jesus working His love, His joy, His peace, His patience in our hearts. And, when the very life of Christ fills us, these qualities will naturally overflow into the lives of those around us. It doesn’t matter where those around happen to be spiritually. His eternal spring cannot help but overflow despite the disposition of others. 1/21/2010 Conversations Within ts

“The wolf changes his coat, but not his disposition.” Proverb

“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.” (Sermon of the Mount) Mt.7.15 ESV

It is sad that Christ finds it necessary to warn His people of corruption in pastors. As a pastor, I know all too well, that even ministers often have desires for power, and fame even if they are veiled under to robes of ministry. It is easy to convince yourself that all you really want is to influence people for their own good but deep down there lurks the ravenous wolf seeking to quench a prideful thirst for power, or control. Usually you can tell the good ones from the bad because the wolf wants something from the sheep the shepherd wants something for the sheep. 1/20/2010 Conversations Within ts

Those who try to be different are actually the same as everyone else trying to be different.

"Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. (Sermon of the Mount) Mt.7.13 ESV

I confess that I am a "go your own way" kind of guy and take silly pride on being different, what the Australians call a "tall poppy." Silly me, none of us is as distinctive as we would like to think we are. I have celebrated in myself the namesake attitude of the road not taken, only to find in His light, it is actually the road most taken. The wide gate is full of people doing it their way. Forgive us blessed Lord. 1/17/2010 Conversations Within ts

“Practicing the Golden Rule is not a sacrifice; it is an investment.” Anonymous

"So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.” (Sermon on the Mount) Mt.7.12 ESV

If I am to do unto others, as I would have them do to me, then I should, at the very least consider what I want done to me. And, if I am honest, there are a good many things I want for myself that are not good for me. Christ does not want us to treat others the way we want to be treated if the way we want to be treated in corrupted by immaturity. I may want people to leave me alone so I conclude that I should leave them alone. I’m sure there are times when this is the proper thing to do but often we want to be left alone to do as we please even if what we pleases us is harmful. Sometimes doing unto others may require that we tell them the truth even if it hurts because that is exactly what we want them to do for us, at least when we are thinking straight. 1/17/2010 Conversations Within ts

“Though our feelings come and go, God’s love for us does not.” C.S. Lewis

“If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!” (Sermon on the Mount) Mt.7.11 ESV

My conversations within are not always with the Lord. I talk with myself even to myself. I have make believe arguments with people. I also argue with the devils. Sometimes the voices within temp me to question the goodness of God. It has been suggested, by the devils I’m sure and sometimes by my suspicious nature, that perhaps God doesn’t love me or that He is setting me up to fail, or that He doesn’t care. Father often interrupts these sad suggestions by speaking to me in the actions of others. He persuades me of His love and forgiveness in the love and forgiveness of my wife and by those closest to me. If mere mortals who share my same inconsistencies, love me without condition, how much more my perfect Father in heaven. 1/16/2010 Conversations Within ts

“He [God] walks everywhere incognito. And the incognito is not always hard to penetrate.” C.S. Lewis

“For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.” (Sermon on the Mount) Mt.7.8 ESV

It appears that there is as much value in the asking as in the receiving. The very act of seeking strengthens the spiritual muscles of finding. It is no wonder that God would require these actions from those who would know Him. And, it only makes sense that the more these muscles are used the stronger our faith becomes. This may explain why God seems so elusive at times, not that He wants to remain hidden; He hides that we might seek Him. Parents play hide-and-seek with their children, not to stay out of sight but to be found. 1/15/2010 Conversations Within ts

Confidence comes from certainty, certainly comes from agreement with His presence within.

"Ask, and it will be given to you…” (Sermon on the Mount) Mt.7.7 ESV

I was sitting in a discussion the other day where the leader asked, “What question would you want to ask God when you get to heaven.” My first thought was, “Why wait for heaven?” Nothing exists between God and his children that Christ did not come to remedy. Nothing prevents us from asking God anything except the muzzle of our own doubts. And, all doubts dissolve when we are confident that Jesus would happily represent our request to His Father. Jesus encourages us to ask, to ask the Father whatever you wish; just ask. We are not promised that He will give us what we want or that He will answer the way we want Him to, only that He will certainly answer all who approach Him in the name. 1/14/2010 Conversations Within ts

Christ tells us not to judge, then immediately tells us to make a judgment. He tells us make a judgment about "what is holy" and what are "pearls" and who are "dogs, and swine.” There are times to we should not pass judgment and times proper to it. So, what do these words mean? Well, one application that comes to mind is that we might want to rethink what we hope accomplish when we quote the Scripture to people who have no respect for them. 1/13/2010 Conversations Within ts

“Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” Mt.6.34 ESV

To me, these words of Jesus are just one more encouragement to be where you are. Don’t waste today’s energy on tomorrow’s concerns. Worry is always about the future even if it is only moments away. If I cannot live tomorrow’s life today, why be concerned with tomorrow’s worries. There are concerns that need our attention in the “now,” when tomorrow arrives it will have its own concerns. Attend to the present by awakening to the present. 1/10/2010 Conversations Within ts

“The key is not to prioritize what's on your schedule, but to schedule your priorities.” Stephen R. Covey

“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Mt.6.33 ESV

I think that Jesus is not telling us to seek God’s kingdom first and then attend to our own affairs. All affairs duly belong to Him. Certainly there are tasks that God assigns to each of us and we should give proper attention to them but we may seek God’s kingdom first in all the business, even the play of life. To seek God’s kingdom is to seek His goodness and glory. We do this best by embracing and enjoying His company, His fellowship, His word and wisdom. Everything then, taking a walk, even mundane actions such as cutting grass or preparing dinner, become acts of worship and service to God. But let us not forget to seek His righteousness or perhaps better His justice, as the word can be translated. I may take a walk with Him in the morning; He may lead me to walk the streets of the oppressed that afternoon. 1/9/2010 Conversations Within ts

“For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all”. Mt.6.32 ESV

Christians go to work, draw a paycheck, buy homes, furniture and the like but clearly, these things are not to be the driving force of our lives. Jesus points out that there should be a distinguishable difference in the pursuits of people of faith and those outside it. We should not fool ourselves into believing that we live for the Kingdom because of an occasional act of generosity. Even the “Gentiles” do that. I think people know that the Kingdom of God is their first concern the same way a person knows if they are a baby sitter or a mother. 1/8/2010 Conversations Within ts

Christ said, "The foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head." Even so, homeless and hanging from a cross, Jesus was able to provide shelter for His mother by asking a friend to care for her. “Uncertainty and mystery are energies of life. Don't let them scare you unduly…” R. I. Fitzhenry

“And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?” Mt.6.27 ESV

Not only are we unable to add a single hour to our life by worrying, we do not know but that the next hour may be our last. Strange as that may seem, not knowing the hour of one’s death can be a powerful ally to help disarm our worries. Why worry about taxes, or bills, or getting cancer, when you may not survive the next hour. Think of all the concerns that would melt into nothing if we were to depart this life within the hour. Of course, we may choose to worry about that as we may choose to worry about everything else outside the illusion of our control. When we accept our death as one of the ingredients of life and realize who is baking the cake, is there any cause for alarm? 1/6/2010 Conversations Within ts

She said that she was being influenced by Erin, our animal loving daughter. On a number of occasions, Jesus asked that we learn from human behavior and to assure our hearts that for every kind act we see in people, “how much more” should we expect it from God. When people show compassion to animals it is because we are made in the image of a compassionate God. Jesus also tells us that if God cares for the needs of animals, He will surely supply our needs. “How much more” should we believe this, when selfish people throw bread to ducks? 1/5/2010 Conversations Within ts

Will you marry me?

Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Mt.6.25 ESV

The other day my youngest daughter asked if we would get her a Bible for her birthday. My precious girl has tasted Heaven’s bread and the pursuits of her life are changing. Jesus issues the challenge to center our lives on something more than just paying the mortgage and the acquisition of stuff. Of course, some have centered their lives on religious pursuits and often fair no better. Christ tells us that He is the proper center of life. He is not a religion to practice but a union to enjoy. He asks no less than our hand in marriage. 1/4/2010 Conversations Within ts

"I believe the power to make money is a gift from God." --John D. Rockefeller

“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life.” Mt.6.25

If we think back to what Christ has just said about God and money, His admonition not to worry is building on the comparison of trusting God or money. Would we worry about our finances if we just inherited ten million dollars? Would ten million be enough to ease our anxieties? How much money would it take to make us feel secure? If money has the power to take care of our needs, is God any less powerful. Do you see what an insult it is to God to trust and serve money but doubt Him. Every economy rises or falls as God decides. Money works only because God decides that it works. What silly people we are to trust paper and coin, when God offers to care for us. Someone said, "All I ask is a chance to prove that money can't make me happy." Well, we have that opportunity every day. 1/3/2010 Conversations Within ts

“If you make money your god, it will plague you like the devil.” Henry Fielding

"No one can serve two masters… You cannot serve God and money.” Mt.6.24 ESV

When Christ says we cannot serve God and money, the word often translated money is “mammōnas.” Mammon can certainly be money but it can also be a number of things. Actually, the word refers to the confidence or security that we believe something can provide us whether it is money, power, fame or influence. People generally think these things will provide them at least a sense of security. But there are other gods out there. We run into people all the time who believe that learning to live without money or getting back to nature will give them the peace they long to possess. All these things can provide some sense of security, if it is only a temporal one but they make for a shabby god. 1/2/2010 Conversations Within ts

“I once was blind but now I see.” John Newton

“I once was blind but now I see.” John Newton

"If your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness.” Mt.6.22-23 ESV

When Jesus speaks to us about our eyes, He is probably speaking about both sets--the eyes of the soul and the body. The eyes of the soul may not always decide what our eyes see each day but they decide what keep before them. The difference between looking and lusting is the difference between looking and gazing even gazing long after the object has passed from view. Is my vision is clouded by selfishness? Do I wander in the darkness of lust and its discontent? Jesus offers to heal our vision. He wants us to know the joy of walking in the light of unselfish love and contentment. His touch can help us see people and things not as objects to fulfill our lusts but as opportunities make full our love and enjoyment of God. 12/30/2009 Conversations Within ts

“A man with an obsession is a man who has very little sales resistance.” C.S. Lewis

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Mt.6.21 ESV

Imagine how silly it would be for a carpenter to cherish his tools so much so that he spent all his time polishing and taking care of them instead of using them. Money is a tool, so also health, just about everything entrusted to us in this place as tools for kingdom use. Jesus is telling us to take care lest we make our tools our treasure. It is one thing to take care of ones tools and another to be obsessed with them. 12/30/2009 Conversations Within ts

“Onions have layers…” Donkey

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.” 2Cor.5.17 ESV

I appreciate when You peel back the layers within me and I catch a glimpse that You really are making me someone new. I sense new life growing in me, ever so slowly yet as steady, as powerful and unstoppable as a coming spring. It seems the older I get the younger I am becoming. Time has become my friend. It dawns with ever increasing clarity that You are that life, that difference I see in myself. Oh, I still have a lot of the old in me but that just it, I know it is old, I tire of it and I want the new. I find myself, more and more, taking your side of the arguments within me. It is strange this detachment I feel from the old man that is passing yet how at home and attached I feel to all the new man that is coming. 1/1/2010 Conversations Within ts
