Grace is the defining difference in everything good.

“But by the grace of God I am what I am.” 2Cor.15

Grace is the one thing that decides whether an outcome is ultimately good. Grace is the overriding distinction between success and failure. Grace is the turning point--the main event behind the scenes that decides everything profitable. God’s grace is the one ingredient that can transform the ordinary into the extraordinary; defeat into victory. The bottom line is that we all need grace.  Conversations Within” ts 6/25/2013 (Chuck and Carla’s, AL)

The desire to be happy is a powerful weapon against every inner demon that comes to steal it.

"Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink...” Jesus

We must often grow tired of being unhappy before we will do something about it. Once we reach that point, we need to identify the true source of our unhappiness. Trying to change your circumstances to produce happiness is like trying to fry an egg on the bottom of the pan. The work must be done inside the pot. The peace of Jesus begins in the heart. He leads us to find peace with God. If you are at peace with God, there is ultimately no reason to be unhappy. Conversations Within” ts 6/24/2013 (Camp Carols, AL)

"There are no shortcuts to any place worth going." Beverly Sills

“We know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. Rom.5 NIV

We must all climb the hill of discipline if we want to see positive changes in our character. Discipline requires knowledge, then a just-do-it approach, followed with a keep-on-keeping on attitude. There are no shortcuts to positive change. There is grace, and with it the inner encouragements of God. He promises grace to any and all who ask for it. Grace is the essential ingredient that turns change into positive change. Without it, people only change for the worse. Conversations Within” ts 6/22/2013 (Camp Carols, AL)

"Talent without discipline is like an octopus on roller skates. There's plenty of movement, but you never know if it's going to be forward, backwards, or sideways." H. Jackson Brown, Jr.

“A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other.” 1Cor.12

So many gifted people end up with fruitless lives because they can’t center the use of their God given gifts to useful ends. It is easy to squander the precious resources that have been entrusted to us and pursue the trivial instead of things of lasting value. Once you are persuaded of the talents entrusted to you, set off to use them for fruitful purposes. Stay focused and fruit will follow!    Conversations Within” ts 6/19/2013 (Springdale, Utah)

"The first and best victory is to conquer self." Plato

“Better a patient person than a warrior, one with self-control than one who takes a city.” Prov.16

It is sad to be a prisoner to your own passions. Happy is the person who can turn their anger off just as easily as they can turn it on--the one who can possess their soul in patience. We must fine-tune our sensitivity to those times when our emotions are getting the best of us. Control your passions; it is one of the few things that you really do have control over-with Help of course.  Conversations Within” ts 6/18/2013 (Springdale, Utah)

A large part of living is learning to manage not so much your surroundings, but yourself.

“The fruit of the Spirit is... self-control.”Gal 5

We tend to focus on changing our circumstances and sadly even try to change others when God would have us work to change ourselves. A good place to start is to control your expectations. If we are not careful our expectations can get the best of us. Like fire, our inner passions must be managed or they will consume our life instead of warming it. It is tragic to center your happiness on your environment—on all the “if onlys.”

“Happy are the meek for they will inherit the earth.” Jesus

Even God cannot create circumstances that would be Heaven for a person whose heart is in Hell. If the heart is not happy nothing outside you will create it for you. When the doldrums of unhappiness assail you steer your course toward matters that matter. Jesus taught that the Kingdom of God is within us. His counsel it to cultivate your garden within, not without; then you can have its fruit with you wherever your are.  Conversations Within” ts 6/18/2013 (On the Road in Utah)

"May you live all the days of your life." Jonathan Swift

“Wake! Why are you sleeping?” Jesus

One tragic result of living in a fallen world is that humans have the tendency of going through the motions of living but not really living. We show up, but don’t show up. ”You don’t choose a life, you live one.” “The Way” (The Movie)

“I am the way, the truth, the life...” Jesus

I see no contradiction to say that life is something you live and something you choose. We can choose many things about life and some things we can’t.. I may want to be president or an astronaut but no matter how bad I want it, it might not be available to me. What we can choose is the way we live, what truths we base our life on. One thing's for certain. Every choice we make will open some doors and close others. Am I  living the life I want? If not, why?  Conversations Within” ts 6/14/2013 (Atlantic Beach, FL)

“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart” Helen Keller

‘Let us make man in our image, in our likeness.” (God speaking to Himself)

It bothers me that I lean mainly toward using my five senses to wake myself to the moment, as if the physical aspects of life are all important. What if I were physically blind or deaf; could I still live fully in each moment? There is more than one kind of blindness and there is more to life than can be experienced by my five physical senses. Friendship, faith, hope, even love have spiritual aspects to them beyond the body. Wake to the interactions of your soul if you want to be fully awake.   Conversations Within” ts 6/13/2013 (Atlantic Beach, FL)

“To know life in every breath, every cup of tea...” The Last Samurai

“I Am!” (God speaking to Moses when he asked Him His name.)

I cannot help but wonder if God has taken the name “I Am,” because He is always fully and completely present everywhere and in every moment. Surely the quality of His interactions each day is as though He has lived a thousand years in it. I think it was C. S. It is not doubt, but desire, that trips us up.

“So teach us to number our days, that we may present to You a heart of wisdom.” Ps.90

Human struggle with faith is not with logic or with reason, but with lust. We believe that eating right gives us health, but we still choose to eat wrong. It is not that we doubt what we know; we desire stuff that is bad for us. It is not doubt, but desire, that trips us up. One reason we make bad choices is that we believe that we have time to recover from them. I can always repent tomorrow. Of course, tomorrow is not promised; nor is the next minute, for that matter. Live each minute as if it is your last. Conversations Within” ts 6/11/2013 (Atlantic Beach, FL)

Good fathers want what is best for their children. The difficulty comes in communicating it. Advice can be good; example is better. The King of Creation is not diminished when we approach Him as our Father; He is wonderfully distinguished. We finally see Him as He wants to be seen. GOD is spelled DAD.

When Jesus tells us to come to God as Father, he is not implying that our image of what it means to be a “father” is correct, but that His understanding and experience is. Some people have had poor fathers. Jesus in effect is saying, “Let me introduce you to my Dad: and, by the way, He wants to adopt you and be your Dad, too.”  Conversations Within” ts 6/7/2013 (Atlantic Beach, FL)

There is much comfort from knowing that Jesus’ favorite designation for God is Father; is there a better way to see Him?

“I go to my Father and your Father...” Jesus

To see God as your Father, even as your Dad, is a transforming grace. It raises our level of confidence in prayer. It sharpens our understanding of His motives and kind intentions. It adds a greater measure of appreciation for His discipline. Our relationship with Him becomes something up-close and personal rather than something distant and impersonal. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” Prov.1
There is not a doubt in my mind that my relationship with my dad planted many seeds that affect interactions with God. I can remember my heart skipping a beat every time my dad caught me misbehaving. I can also remember how wonderful it felt to have his praise. It is proper to fear and love God--not fear in the sense of terror but of deep appreciation of His commitment to goodness. We may start out afraid of Him just as a misbehaving child is afraid of his father’s anger. Over time the child grows up and fear is replaced with respect and love. Do not blame God for your troubles, credit Him for loving you enough to humble your hard head.

“God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.” 1Pet.5
Most of the time we bring trouble on our own heads and sometimes have the audacity to blame God for it. And, even though we often deserve what we get, God is still able to work everything for our good when we will humble ourselves and let His Spirit teach us.
