When Jesus traveled our diseased and dangerous roads, He must have noticed the worry on our faces because He was always saying, “Do not be afraid.”

"Do not be afraid any longer, only believe." Mk.5

If we want our fears to melt, we must move into the warmth of all that God is offering us. He is  a coat in the cold, wisdom at the moment of decision, and strength at the point of weakness. He is the motivation to live life as it should be lived. His grace is the gumption we feel to do something about a concern. He is the spiritual vitality of all faith, hope, and love. What do you need at this moment? God is the great I am!  Conversations Within” ts 5/24/2014

“Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow, it empties today of its strength.” Corrie ten Boom

“Stop worrying…” Phil.4

Worry and fear work together to rob us of life’s strength. It is good to be reminded that we do not have to cooperate with these thieves when they come to ransack our peace. The best way to resist them is to redirect our energies away from the future and into all that God is promising to be and asking us to do in the present moment.  Conversations Within” ts 5/23/2014

Christian hope is more akin to the expectation of someone looking forward to spring than it is like a child hoping it doesn't rain over the holidays.

“You hold my lot.” Ps.16

If it is true that fear usually involves the future--what may or may never happen--then thise who trust in God need never to worry. God Himself gives the assurance to His children that He, not fate or fickle choices holds our future. The way I see it is that we have two choices; the future can influence this present moment by our fears or by our faith.  Conversations Within” ts 5/22/2014

“I fear the prayers of John Knox more than all the assembled armies of Europe.” Mary, Queen of Scots

“The LORD is for me; I will not fear; What can man do to me?” Ps.118

A proper fear gives proper respect to the object of our fears. Having a proper respect say for the power of electricity is one way we discover its value, and discover it without injury. To believe that God has the final say in everything is to give due respect to Him, and is one way we discover His value. To fear God in this manner, is the best way of disarming all other fears.   Conversations Within” ts 5/21/2014

“The only place that fear can exist is in our thoughts of the future. It is a product of our imagination, causing us to fear things that do not at present and may not ever exist.” Will Smith (After Earth-the movie)

“...perfect love casts out fear: because fear has torment.” 1Jo.4

I am struck by the fact that most fear involves the future in some way--what may or may never happen. I might loose my job, or die of cancer or be killed by a tornado. This means that we can in the very least deal with some of our fears by being where we are or by “rooting our self in this present moment” (a phrase from the movie mentioned above).  By attending to the present we can soberly think about a potential threat and find a proper not a panicked response to it. “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding.” Ps.111

That God loves fallen people is surely seen because of everything He has given to help us live in a fallen world. A healthy fear or heightened awareness of danger is one of them. Such fear is a gift to sharpen our response to threats and there are many threats in our messed up world. It is only when fear becomes panic and is uncontrolled that can cause us harm.  Wisdom teaches us to use fear as God’s provision to help lead us to safety. .   Conversations Within” ts 5/19/2014

“The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little extra.” Jimmy Johnson

“Call to me, and I will answer you; I will tell you wonderful and marvelous things that you know nothing about.” Jer.33

I believe that God wants us to live extraordinary lives--to go the second mile, to forgive seven times seventy, to turn the other cheek, to love our enemies, in short to go beyond and put the extra in the ordinary. When we invite Christ into our lives He becomes the catalyst that begins this transformation. Leave a place better than you find it. Leave people better than you find them.

If it is in our power to improve the lives of people, let us do so humbly as servants, not as meddlesome know-it-alls. “Do more than is required.” Gary Ryan Blair

“For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?” Jesus

God invites us to the sheer joy of doing more than is expected. He wants each of us to excel--to go beyond and discover the nature of abounding love. His kind of love is not restricted, it is unleashed. Because love is its own reward, we are encouraged to abound in it more and more, even to love those who hate us; we might even say especially those who hate us. Who better to love than those who have yet to discover the power of redemptive love.   Conversations Within” ts 5/13/2014

“If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles.” Jesus

I have been to some beautiful places. Most of them required some extra effort--a long hike or a climb up to some vista. Just about everything spectacular in life can only be experienced after we walk the extra mile. Relationships are no different. Do not do only what is expected, go further up and further in and you will see what few eyes see and experience the wonders that line the path of unrestrained love.   Conversations Within” ts 5/12/2014

“It is only goodness which gives extras, and so I say again that we have much to hope from the flowers.” Arthur Conan Doyle

“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! 1Jo.3

God not only provides, He abundantly provides. He gives over and above what is needed. Every flower is a plus, every fragrant petal a reminder that He wants more for His children than just mere survival. Perhaps the greatest example of His overwhelming love is our adoption as sons and daughters. He wants to be more for us than just some deity, He invites us to call Him “Dad.”  Conversations Within” ts 5/10/2014

If I ask for daily bread I should gratefully eat whatever God puts on my plate.

“Give us this day our daily bread.” Jesus

I have always had, and pretty much expect to always have everything I need. If God is my Father why should I expect anything less? The real challenge I face is to wake to God’s provision. “God provides the wind but man must raise the sails.” Augustine

“Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; For it is God that worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” Phil. 2

One bit of wisdom advises, “Give your children enough money to do something, but not enough to do nothing.” I believe this is consistent with the way God provides for his children. God surely does not want to cripple his children, but rather enable us to live productive lives. We should stop expecting God to do work which He has clearly assigned to us.  Conversations Within” ts 5/8/2014

We may take great comfort from looking back with gratitude in order to strengthen our hope of looking forward in faith. ”Hurting someone can be as easy as throwing a stone in the sea. But do you have any idea how deep that stone can go?”

“Behold my hands and my feet…” Jesus

Careless words and actions often leave scars. The wound may eventually heal, but the scar remains. If we understand the Bible correctly, Jesus still carries the scars of the cross on His resurrected body. What can we do when we see some scar left by our hand? I am sure God does not want us to wallow in guilt. Such sorrow is only thinking of yourself. Beyond asking for forgiveness, we can ask God to work beauty out of our ugliness and believe that He can.

It is easier to ask for forgiveness than it is to give it.

“Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.” Ps.51

Is there any grace like being forgiven, any joy like a relationship restored? Forgiveness where God is concerned is immediate. Even so, people must often catch up to it.
