“The best things in life aren't things.” Art Buchwald

“What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his very soul?” Jesus

Some things cannot be bought but sadly they can be sold. My soul is one of them, and along with it, everything else that makes life worth living. You cannot buy love, nor friendship nor any of the things which bring lasting happiness but tragically we can trade them away by chasing stuff we think will make us happy.  Conversations Within” ts 6/24/2014

“Never trade what you want the most for what you want at the moment.” Unknown

“What will a man give in exchange for his soul?” Jesus

Just about everyone I know, myself included, has traded something of lasting value for something of temporal value. We trade away our health by making poor choices in diet and exercise. We trade our marriage or relationship with our kids by giving priority to our career. We trade lasting joy for momentary pleasure, or give preference to the urgent over the important. All in all, we are pretty poor traders. God will help us with this if we let Him. Conversations Within” ts 6/23/2014

"This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!” God

“In the past God spoke to our ancestors many times and in many ways through the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us through his Son.” Heb.1

God has chosen a number of ways to speak to His children, but Christ claimed to be His clearest medium and His complete message. Everything that needs to be said is said in Him. This is why Jesus is called the Word of God. All of God’s  promises are “Yes,” in Him. The fullness of all that God wants to be for us is discovered in Him. To have Christ in your heart is to have the mind of God living in you. Conversations Within” ts 6/21/2014

”Just as a candle cannot burn without fire, men cannot live without a spiritual life.” Buddha

“Those who have ears to hear, let them hear.” Jesus

It does little good to question the wisdom of God, especially where communicating with Him is concerned. For the present, at least, He has decided to speak more to the ears of our spirit rather than to the ears of our body. We should trust His wisdom in this. It probably has something to do with our walking by faith rather than walking by sight. Conversations Within” ts 6/20/2014

Some things can only be learned a little at a time.

‘Keep seeking, keep asking and keep on knocking.” Jesus

There may be some very good reasons why God does not always give us an immediate answer to some question we have asked. The question might best be answered through the process of discovery. If God is anything, He is patient. He speaks with deliberation and calculated wisdom. By not answering immediately, He may be saying that our need for patience is greater than our need to know something. The whole of our interaction with Him is to deepen faith not remove the need for it. Conversations Within” ts 6/19/2014

I suppose learning to be silent is as much an art in prayer as it is in any other conversation.

“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” Rev.2

Listening is an essential part of any conversation; this is surely true when you are speaking with God. I have discovered in my own experience that God speaks to me all of the time. I have problems hearing Him for a number of reasons. One is when I do not shut up long to listen or when the noise of other thoughts drown out His. Even so, God is patiently teaching me how to wake to His voice as one wakes to anything --like a bird singing outside the window. Conversations Within” ts 6/18/2014

Conversations I have within are just as real as the ones I have without; maybe more so.

“God is a spirit and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and in truth.” Jesus

We may, at times, want God to speak to our ears but it is no surprise that He usually speaks to our heart. And, why not? We are after all, more than crude flesh; we are the spirit that inhabits it. We must fine tune our sensitivities to the world of spirit if we are to commune with God. He will meet us in the physical world, but every touch, taste, sight, sound and smell invites us to listen to His voice in our heart. Even when He speaks to our ears He wants to speak to our heart.   Conversations Within” ts 6/17/2014

"If you could spend an hour in conversation with anyone living or dead, who would it be?" (Facebook Post)

“I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.” Jesus

I recently saw the question above on a Facebook post showing a picture of a park bench overlooking the ocean. I immediately knew that Jesus would be my first and only choice. My next thought was, ‘How silly! I can have a good conversation with Jesus whenever I want.” It makes little difference whether Christ is with me in the flesh or in the spirit. Actually, it is better that He meets with us in the Spirit. This way He can talk with more than one of us at a time. Conversations Within” ts 6/16/2014

I may not be able to perform a totally selfless act, but I can choose to avoid a totally selfish one.

“Love your neighbor as yourself.” Jesus

We should not confuse love with like, especially when talking about loving yourself. God wants me to love me, not in the sense of liking but in the sense of seeking what is good, right and true. I may not like myself, but I can certainly act in my best interest. And, Jesus has made it clear that it is in our best interest to look out for the interest of others. No man should be nor can be selfless but we can be and should be unselfish.  Conversations Within” ts 6/14/2014

“Life becomes easier when you learn to accept an apology you never got.” Robert Brault

“Father forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” Jesus

Forgiveness is the only way of healing your heart after someone has hurt you. But we can go beyond just forgiving for our own good. We can overlook the offense for their benefit, even when they have not apologized. We are never more like God when we forgive someone who has not asked for it.  Conversations Within” ts 6/13/2014

“The true meaning of life is to plant trees under whose shade you do not expect to sit.” Nelson Henderson

“Love your neighbor as yourself... Do not let your right hand know what your left hand is doing.” Jesus

If there is ever a time to please oneself, it is after we have taught our heart to find our joy--not in things, but in service to others. Feel good about leaving people and places better than you find them. Make it a goal every day to do something that will benefit someone, especially when the only good you get out of it is the simple joy of knowing you have done so. There is no better life than rising to love and be loved.   Conversations Within” ts 6/12/2014

“Non nobis solum nati sumus. (We are not born for ourselves alone.)” Cicero

“Do not merely look out for your own interest but for the interest of others.” Phil.2

Service is the be all and end all of love. We love God when we serve Him. We love our family and friends most when we serve them. Has not God made Himself our servant by protecting, providing and guiding? Can we not say that God loves us by serving us? To love is to serve, to serve is to love. “You can easily judge the character of a man by how he treats those who can do nothing for him.” Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

“But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous." Jesus

Jesus invites us to escape the dungeon of living for self and learn the absolute joy of loving and serving others. It is interesting that Christ predicts “future reward” for living this way. Some may consider such motivation to be self serving. But Jesus did not say that reward is to be our motivation for serving. He simply knows it to be the inescapable consequence of an unselfish life when it is lived in the presence of a generous God.  Conversations Within” ts 6/9/2014

When I think about it, just about every unhappy moment in my life is when I am thinking about what “I” want; what “I” deserve; what is keeping “me” from having it.

“Do nothing from selfish ambition.”  Phil.2

I believe that people were created to be happy but we have corrupted happiness into a pursuit when God designed it to be the state that inhabits abounding love. When the energy of our life flows out in service to others, our hearts knows happiness. When the energy of our life draws selfishly inward, happiness is always just out of reach. “Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.” Arthur Ashe

“This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.” 1Jo.5

Positive thinking can be powerful goodness, especially when it gives confidence to our prayers. When we center our prayers around God’s promises, we connect our request to His answer. Positive thinking can be so much more than wishful thinking. It can express an unshakable faith in the good intentions of God. Certainly when we know all is well with God, all is well.  Conversations Within” ts 6/7/2014

“A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart.” Jesus

One reason I love surfing is that it is one of the few times when I am able to stop thinking about all the stuff of life and think only about riding the wave. Surfing helps me channel my thoughts. It would be impossible to stop thinking altogether, but we can certainly choose one thought over another. There is great value in learning to be where you are, to embrace the present moment and to live life in the now. But living now would mean very little if we do not have the hope that life will continue. I may only be able to live in the present but I can surely hope for the future. Without hope, the joy of this moment is diminished, with it, our joy endures and is made full.  Conversations Within” ts 5/26/2014
