"Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see a shadow." - Helen Keller

Why my soul are you downcast? Ps.42

“Do you know how good you have it?” I ask myself this question all the time. If you are feeling depressed that is probably a good question to ask yourself. If you are going to question life you might as well ask questions that will lead you out of darkness rather than deeper into it.   Conversations Within” ts 7/25/2014

Just as it is possible to have pain without misery we can have doubts without despair.

“We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair.” 2Cor.4

I have moments of doubt but I try not to despair over them. I am in and out, on and off the road of the beliefs which center my life. I am still learning how to keep it between the lines. The light of Christ is still healing my blindness. Sometimes “I can see clearly.” Other times the fog of doubt rolls in around me. One brother powerfully describes it thus, “Faith is the art of holding on to things your reason has once accepted in spite of your changing moods” Conversations Within” ts 7/24/2014

Hope answers despair, as faith answers doubt and both do it by choosing one over the other.

“The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup.” Ps.16

Our feelings usually follow our focus. Change your focus and you change your feelings. Center your thoughts on what God is promising and peace will guard your heart and mind. What is God promising? Jesus tells us to seek and we will find. It is the very act of seeking that starts us on the journey of changing our focus.  Conversations Within” ts 7/22/2014

Depression may have a difficult time lingering in the heart of one who is persuaded of the kind intentions of God.

“For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any thing else in all creation, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Rom.8

The light which can pierce the darkest night of depression is found in the simple knowledge that God loves even me. Let us preach this truth to our hearts and be persuaded that nothing can separate us from His kind intentions. Count the expressions of His love that surround you this very moment, and His sweet Spirit will “melt the clouds of sin and sadness” and “drive the dark of doubt away.”  Conversations Within” ts 7/21/2014

“Doom, despair and agony on me, deep dark depression and excessive misery.” Hee Haw

“Darkness is my closest friend.” Ps.88

Who hasn’t felt the weight of despair? Depression comes to us all. The sad truth is that some people struggle with it every day. The cause may be some chemical imbalance, or it can come from overwhelming circumstances. I am convinced that one powerful weapon against it is learning how to manage yourself. This is true even if medication is necessary, as it sometimes is. To do this we must learn to speak truths to our heart that lead us into the light rather than listen to feelings which keep us in the dark.  Conversations Within” ts 7/21/2014

If we are still waiting on God's answer, it may just be that He is tweaking our request.

“If we ask anything according to His will He hears us.” 1Jo.5

I am sure God is pleased by our expressions of faith even if He has to fine tune them. We may look to Him with lesser expectations in mind when He desires to give so much more than we could ever expect or imagine. We seek the apple, He wants to give us an orchard. Or, it may be the other way around. We seek an orchard while God knows that all we need right now is a single apple and He would teach us contentment. Conversations Within” ts 7/18/2014

“Faith can move mountains but don’t be surprised if God hands you a shovel.” Unknown

“Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move.” Jesus

It becomes each of us to merge all of life under one heading; to embrace all that God desires to be for us in Christ. That said, we should understand that God uses faith and He also uses good old fashion elbow grease. He sometimes sends us to answer our own prayers. We may ask Him to provide and He may give us work. We may ask for clear direction and He may use trial and error to give it to us. All of life is faith or it should be.  Conversations Within” ts 7/18/2014

“Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase.” Martin Luther King, Jr

“After hearing about Jesus, she came up in the crowd behind Him and touched His cloak. For she thought, “If I just touch His garments, I will get well.” Mark 5

Faith often overcomes doubt when we act on it in some fashion. The proof of our faith is in the pudding of our actions. Faith is often referred to as a step or a reaching out. God may be waiting for us to take this step before He acts on our behalf. A good question might be, “How can I express my faith in the crisis before me this day?”  Conversations Within” ts 7/16/2014

The value of faith is not determined by the scope of its accomplishments but only as its accomplishments serve love.

“If I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.” 1 Cor.13

God requires faith from us simply because there must be trust in any loving relationship. Some have emphasized faith, or the power of prayer, but both are merely servants of love if they are to have any value at all. Let me seek a stronger faith to serve a stronger love, not to serve some silly notion of having the power to move mountains. Conversations Within” ts 7/15/2014

"Faith is not belief without proof, but trust without reservation." - D. Elton Trueblood

"You believe because you have seen me. Blessed are those who believe without seeing me." Jesus

Why does Jesus commend faith without actually seeing proof? One reason might be that He wants to tie us inseparably to the testimony of those who did. Why should we not believe a reliable witness when they tell us they saw something? Trust is integral to any belief. If we want proof, let us examine the fruit of those who say they witnessed the resurrection. A reliable witness deserves the trust of a reliable faith. Conversations Within” ts 7/14/2014

“I am who I am…“Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” I AM

One thing I am sure that God desires to be for us is simply this present moment. His name, after all, is “I Am.” To be where you are, and give yourself fully to the moment, is one of the ways we can wake to Him and join Him who is always fully present. God is reality. “Who forgives all your iniquities; who heals all your diseases…” Ps.103

I would venture to say that most prayer requests I hear concern physical health. When discovering all that God desires to be for us, finding Him to be our primary care physician is of incomparable worth. God not only heals sickness, He is able to use it to heal all sorts of ills. God is a holistic doctor. His concern is our total health, body and soul. It should come as no surprize that His prescriptions might use a physical malady to cure a spiritual one.  Conversations Within” ts 7/10/2014

Only the saved appreciate a savior.

“And you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” Mat.1

You never really appreciate a lifeguard until you need one. Usually, needing a savior of some kind is considered a sign of weakness. This of course is the very point that causes most of us to stumble. It’s called pride. It takes true humility to admit that you are helpless and need someone to rescue you. Ultimately, we must realize that our good will never be good enough, just as a drowning person must stop trying to save themselves and start trusting the lifeguard. Conversations Within” ts 7/9/2014

“Our wedding was many years ago. The celebration continues to this day.” ~ Gene Perret

“For your Maker is your husband, the LORD of hosts is his name.” Is.54

I can think of few descriptions of life with God better than that of marriage. In marriage you  accept your partner’s offer and then offer yourself in return. What does God offer beyond forgiveness? Well, the same sort of things any good husband offers--to provide, guide, love and protect so long as you both shall live--with God that means forever. What do we bring to this marriage? We pledge mutual devotion and partnership in a life together.    Conversations Within” ts 7/6/2014

Freedom of speech does not mean that it is always wise to give one.

“Be slow to speak.” James1

Just because I have the right to say something does not always mean I should say it. I am convinced that God gave us freedom because it is the only soil where the seeds of love can grow. Practically speaking, true love does not abuse freedom but uses it to yield good fruit. This may mean that even though the freedom exists to say something, love may refrain us from saying it if the fruit it yields is not wholesome.     Conversations Within” ts 7/5/2014

“A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” Prov.15

We have a responsibility to help others with their words as much as we do our own. If people come to us with angry words we can help by not adding fuel to the fire with more angry words. The tone we use says as much, if not more, than the words we choose.

"Little by little, a little becomes a lot"- Tanzanian proverb

“Catch for us the foxes, the little foxes that ruin the vineyards, our vineyards that are in bloom.” Song of Solomon 2

We all know of people who have made a devastating decision--one that ruined the fruitfulness of their life. But we rarely realize the small choices we make each day that add up over time and essentially do the same. You can squander ten thousand dollars all at once, or a dollar at a time. Every time we choose, we add to or take away the fruitfulness of our life.   Conversations Within” ts 6/25/2014
