“If you want to feel rich, just count the things you have that money can't buy.” Proverb

“Wealth and riches are in his house…” Ps.112

What is the measure of true wealth but knowing the value of everything you possess that cannot be bought or sold. It is said that the “best things in life are free.” Your mother’s cooking, the smile of a friend, another sunrise, an encouraging word are gifts with no monetary value but have value none the less. To have these things is to be wealthy beyond measure, except maybe realizing you have them and being grateful for them.  Conversations Within” ts 5/25/2015

“When something bad happens you have three choices. You can let it define you, let it destroy you, or you can let it strengthen you.” Unknown.

“A man reaps what he sows.” Gal.6

Bad stuff happens to us all. The good news it that we make it worse or better depending on our response. Don’t make a bad situation worse by making another bad choice; look for ways to correct it, not compound it. Often the only way forward is back. A friend of mine once said that if you get off the path, five miles out, is five miles back. The sooner we start the better.

A bad day every now and then can be a good thing.

“Give thanks in all circumstances.” 1Thess.4

Are you having a good day? Give thanks for it. Are you having a bad day? Give thanks in it as well--not because it is a bad day, but because God is able to work all things for our good. God has not told us to give thanks for everything but in everything. The root of plants grow deeper under duress just as faith can deepen when we are having a tough go of things. “No matter how bad things are, you can always make things worse.” Henry David Thoreau:

“Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.” James 1

Running out of gas can be bad; pitching a temper tantrum because you have can make it worse. Complaining about a bad situation will often make it worse. Our response to tough times can improve or injure. Our attitude decides which. We may have no control over what happens to us, but we have complete control over what goes on in us. “If life gets too hard to stand, kneel.” Gordon B. Hinckley

“Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” Mary (the mother of Jesus)

It is all too easy to just tell someone to pray about it when they are going through some difficulty. But to actually have a conversation with God--not just talking to Him, but posturing yourself to really listen, is quite a different story. Everybody knows you can talk without truly communicating or listen without really hearing. Prayer is an attitude and sometimes we must stick with it until we have it. And what is that attitude? Mary the mother of Jesus said it well. “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” Conversations Within” ts 5/21/2015

“'Hardships often prepare ordinary people for an extraordinary destiny.” C.S. Lewis

“We also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope…”

The answer to our hopes for a meaningful and fruitful life is often found in our response to tough times. Hardship in and of itself is just hard; it is the way we deal with it that determines if it proves beneficial. God certainly uses hardship but He also makes all grace abound for us to profit from tough times. Open your heart to drink deeply of grace just as the parched earth drinks in rain during a storm. “Difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations!” Melchor Lim

“He has made everything beautiful in its time.” Ecc.3

Having tough times? Give God time to make them a work of art. It has been the testimony of many that after looking back at the darkest days in their journey, they now realize that God was using them as the turning point in their present joy and fruitfulness.  God carves beautiful landscapes with wind, water and time. He creates beautiful people with the winds of adversity, the water of His word and the simple passage of time. Patience friend, let us be patient.  Conversations Within” ts 5/18/2015

"Love's greatest gift is its ability to make everything it touches sacred." - Barbara de Angelis

"Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the LORD will do amazing things among you." Josh.3

The word consecrate is not used very often and I suppose when you think about it, this is a good thing. After all, we can only give ourselves but to one true purpose. Every other consecration, as when two people pledge themselves to one another in marriage, is done so because we have centered our lives around that one true purpose. For the Christian this is simply loving God. As such, all of life comes under one sacred heading, “I am His, He is mine.” Conversations Within” ts 5/15/2015

“There is but one good; that is God. Everything else is good when it looks to Him and bad when it turns from Him.” C. S. Lewis

“Having a form of godliness but denying its power.”

For everything that godliness works in us there is an opposite that it purges from us. The opposite of love is not only hate, but loving what is wrong--even having the wrong priorities in our love. Godliness inclines us to love the Giver more than the gift. It guards our heart from loving things like money or pleasure and would have us use them instead as tools for loving God and others. Godly people not only call on God, they answer the call of God on their lives. They learn to live for something greater than themselves because they live for some One greater than themselves. Godliness inclines us to place more weight on our daily decisions than on our talents or abilities. What are talents and abilities if we do not decide to use them for something other than vanity? Godly people consciously live in God’s presence. They acknowledge Him almost unceasingly in prayer--not so much praying in front of others, but as an attitude of the heart. “I am thankful for my struggle because without it, I wouldn't have stumbled upon my strength.” Alexandra Elle

“Let all that I am praise the LORD; with my whole heart, I will praise his holy name.”Ps.103

Sometimes we feel grateful and give thanks. Sometimes we give thanks and then feel grateful. Just because we don’t feel something does not mean that our lack of emotions should keep us from doing it when doing it is proper. But praise God when we do feel it. There is nothing quite like that moment when what we know, do and feel have merged into oneness. In such moments, life could hardly be better. Just because you feel like doing it, doesn’t mean you should.

“For the grace of God has appeared...instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age.” Titus 2

There are times when I do not want to do something, and realize that there is a good chance that I should be doing it. Sadly, there are times when I want to do something, and I know I probably shouldn’t. I may not feel like exercising, or working or any number of good things, but I need to do them anyway. I may feel like eating potato chips, but I should probably eat an apple instead. I may feel like telling someone off, but it would be better to overlook an offense and forgive. “Feelings are much like waves, we can't stop them from coming but we can choose which one to surf.”Jonatan MÃ¥rtensson

“For God is not a God of confusion but of peace.” 1Cor.14

I think God wants to merge our mind, will, and emotions into one solid stream of goodness. This is just another way of saying that He wants to create wholeness in our lives. Wholeness is what the Bible means when it speaks about peace. Our hearts are often divided. Our feelings are mixed, our decisions fickle, and our understanding confused. The peace of Christ heals this fragmentation, and unites what we know, what we do, and how we feel in the goodness of God’s love.  Conversations Within” ts 5/6/2015

Just because you feel afraid does not mean you are in danger. Just because you feel angry does not mean you have a right to be. Feelings often mislead us. We should base our decisions on all that is good, right, and true, not on a particular feeling, (even if is is a good feeling). “People, when they are able, always choose whatever desire is the greatest at the moment.” Jonathan Edwards.

“I always do what pleases Him." Jesus

Decisions based on feelings are often rash and unwise. The same can be said of decisions based solely on desires. We often make bad choices because our strongest desire at the moment is out of line with what we know is good, wise and true. A part of wisdom’s wisdom is that we train our desires so that we have a greater desire for superior desires. In other words, we would choose, wisdom over wealth, health over one more piece of pie, friendship over pride, and pleasing God over everything.  Conversations Within” ts 5/4/2015

If you have no time to rest, it is exactly the right time.” Mark Twain

"Six days do your work, but on the seventh day do not work.” Exo.23

God commands that we rest. It is not a suggestion. By doing so, He not only is looking out for our well being, but the well being of those who might work for us. He even said we should give our animals rest. If we are wise, we will build into our life healthy rhythms of work and rest. God prescribes one day in seven. God decides what is right and what is wrong. He has left it up to us to decide which one we will do. “Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord.” 1Cor.15
I think the opposite of Mother Teresa’s observation is just as true. If we love people, we will have no time left to judge them. If we spend our time always abounding in goodness, we will have no time left for activities which are not good. Do not let authority go to your head but let it give direction to your heart especially when under it as well.  Conversations Within” ts 4/25/2015
