Good character begins with your next right decision.

I have made some pretty bad decisions in my day. Through the years I have managed to rack up a significant collection of moral failures. It is easy to get discouraged when I look back. But looking back rarely moves one forward. No matter how many times we have messed up, we can start from where we are and point our energy in the right direction. Character is made one decision at a time, and like any journey, we eventually arrive if we keep taking the necessary steps.

I believe it is wise to cage and consider our words. thoughts, and our actions before we set them loose on the world. Learning to pause before is far better than picking up after. I sometimes wonder if I need to put duct tape on my mouth so I have to pause and remove it before I speak.

As God is spirit, so too is the man made in His image. Just as we feed the body, we must feed the soul. God’s word is surely its bread. We exercise the body, we must also exercise the soul. Obedience to God’s word is how.

“It is well with my soul.” Horatio Spafford

The mature soul has leaned to enjoy whatever they are doing, instead of selfishly doing only what they enjoy. This happens when we realize that happiness is a choice, and that joy springs from within us when we accept all that God is for us in each moment. It is not wise to base our happiness on ever changing outward circumstances but on the reliability that all is well when all is well with God.

“They may torture my body, break my bones, even kill me. Then they will have my dead body, but not my obedience.” Mahatma Gandhi

I am inwardly encouraged to nurture a strong inner life, one rooted firmly in the promises of God. When the winds of adversity come, and they will surely come, the mature soul will endure. We can stave off a good bit of what comes against the body, but only for a while. But even though  our physical life will eventually succumb, a strong soul united to God can remain forever.

“What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” Henry S. Haskins

The body is temporal, the soul eternal. We often forget this and actually pretend the reverse is true. We cling to the outside world that is here and gone in a flash, and neglect the inner life that will long survive it. We are the soul within, not the glove without. Give priority to the health of  spiritual life, for it is here alone where we can find true life, true health and lasting peace.

“And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.” Jesus Conversations Within” ts 7/16/2016

“Live life from within.” Zen quote

A deliberate, purposeful response is better than a knee-jerk reaction. When we chose to live our lives on the principles of goodness-of faith, hope and love, then most of our decisions are already made. A mature inner life gives direction to our thoughts, words and actions. It is one thing to keep in step with the Spirit of God living within us, and another to follow the cadence of selfish passions.

Is there anything more wonderful than being loved by God?

The real measure of God’s love is discovered when we consider what He was willing to give in order to secure our freedom. He ransomed our life with the life of His Son. If He gave us the greater how can we ever doubt that He will provide us the lesser. Most of us know this. Our difficulty lies in applying it to our current crisis, whatever it may be. At such times, we should remind ourselves of just how far God was willing to go for our benefit.

“He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?” Rom.8 Conversations Within” ts 7/14/2016

To know God is surely transformation, not just information.

Knowing God has been the single most defining influence in my life. I am grateful that He loves me despite me. I am also grateful that though He loves me as I am, He is not leaving me the way I am. One of the clearest expressions of His love has been His discipline. He is all the time patiently working change in my attitudes and behavior. His corrections can be tough, but His corrections are life and peace.

“He's my rock, my sword, my shield. He's the hub in the middle of the wheel.”

God is so many things to His children. To possess Him in faith is to have everything. When He is the hub of our life, our wheel rolls with balance. When He is not, we wobble all over the place. Songs taught to children about simple faith in God are not something we grow beyond, but become the very foundation that we can build our lives upon.

God invites us to experience Him, not invent Him.

I want to see God as He truly is, not as I want Him to be. Time and time again God invites each of us to experience Him, not invent Him. He may pardon our false notions about Him, but He will not bend to them. Jesus stands alone in these considerations. He very pointedly told us that if we want to know what God the Father is really like, just take a good look at Him. Jesus is the image of the invisible God.

The way we view God may be greatly improved upon when we understand how wonderfully He views us.

God has declared everyone in Christ His adopted child. This defines every interaction we have, and will ever have, with Him. This is just another way of saying that love defines everything between us--not so much our love for Him, but His love for us. What can we expect as His children? “Surely goodness and mercy will follow us all the days of our lives and we will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”

“See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called children of God; and such we are.” 1 John 3 Conversations Within” ts 7/10/2016

"God loves us not because we are lovable, but because He is love.” C.S.Lewis.

When we discover all that we mean to God, perhaps we will discover all that He is to us. I am not yet fully persuaded of the greatness of God’s love for me. I still have days when I wallow in my doubts. On these days of doubt, my focus has taken a downward plunge--my eyes are on my unworthiness rather than the immeasurable greatness of His love. At such times we all need to lift our gaze and behold the great canopy of His love over us.  The sky's the limit!

"When you feel life out of focus, always return to basic of life - breathing". Mr Miyagi

Take a breath. How many times have you said this to yourself? There is great value in the focus that a single breath can bring to us. Breathe, still the soul, calm the waters within. Learning the value of pause can be a magical way of helping us focus on matters that matter. Learn how to reboot your system in a single breath.

”Freedom is the oxygen of the soul.” Moshe Dayan

Is there any way to measure the value of the Spirit’s counsel? He guides us in all that is healthy and unhealthy, good and bad, right and wrong, moral and immoral, wise and unwise. I want to breathe the fresh air of freedom that comes from following such counsel. His words are liberating. He teaches us how pleasures can compliment our joys, not steal from them. “Breathe on me breath of God.”

“Keep breathing!”

I have been held underwater a few times after wiping out on a wave. When you are deprived of air, you will do anything to get to that next breath. Breathing is life. It is no surprise that something so vital to physical life is also used to describe us as spiritual beings. The Hebrew word for “soul” and “spirit” is same word for “breath.” Our need for invisible air is the same as our need for our invisible God. Breathe Him in.

“Then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.” Gen.2 Conversations Within” ts 7/6/2016

”Worship is simply giving God His breath back.” Lou Giglio

Every breath is a gift from God. Even the breath we use to give Him thanks must first be borrowed from Him. Many cultures practice slow, purposeful, deep breathing for physical and spiritual health. I should think this practice would be exceptionally beneficial when accompanied with thanksgiving and praise. Inhale every grace, exhale every confession--not only of our shortcomings, but also of His great love.

“Life in every breath!” The Last Samurai

Lord, I am asleep many times when I should be awake. Rouse me. Wake me to the joy of this moment. Encourage me to lay hold of life as you intend--to live full and free from all that enslaves; to live as Your partner in faith, hope and love. Open my eyes to see goodness, my ears to hear your music, my hands to serve, my mouth to speak truth in love and my heart to feel your joy --to find life in every breath and every breath the air of Your love.

“Inhale, exhale, repeat.” Zen Quote

Breathing is one of those subconscious activities that we can also do consciously. It is no wonder that many contemplative people use conscious breathing to wake to the world in and around them. I am convinced that God, is always inviting us to consciously join Him in the joys of the present moment. He is so fully present that He wants us to share the same joy--that the qualities of our interactions this day would be as though we have lived a thousand years in it.

“Know yourself. Understand yourself. Correct yourself.” Unknown

The ability to see your own faults, and teach yourself to deal with them is of great worth. Learning to be your own coach, motivate yourself, and preach truth to your heart is an invaluable skill. With it we can argue ourselves out of moods of worry, fear, anger, even doubt. A person who cannot see their own faults will never change for the better. God offers His help with this. The only condition required to receive it is humility.

“You, therefore, who teach another, do you not teach yourself?” Rom.2 Conversations Within” ts 7/2/2016

Live in the focused light of eternity. Make investments, not just for the few years of retirement left to us here, but also those which will support us in the economy of Glory. “Even after enlightenment you still have to do the laundry.” Zen Quote

I hope that I never stop learning, but I do not want to wind up being a “professional student”--never putting into practice what I have learned. Knowledge should always be practical, not theoretical. We learn in order to live, not just learn for the sake of learning. I try to avoid empty discussions that have no practical value and express no tangible love.

"The secret of genius is to carry the spirit of the child into old age, which means never losing your enthusiasm." Aldous Huxley

An enthusiasm for living goes hand-in-hand with an enthusiasm for learning. Never outgrow the passion of the child within. Explore! Be inquisitive; investigate the world around you. Never stop learning, playing, or creating. If we approach all of life as an adventure, then even death will be the beginning of yet another--perhaps the greatest one.

“Experience teaches only the teachable.” Aldous Huxley

I think it is better to learn and live rather than live and learn. Experience can be a hard teacher. In any case, we should always be learning. Learn from mistakes and messups--we all have them. Someone has said that the only failure is the failure to learn. Be teachable and remain teachable. This is especially true when I think I already know something--there is always the probability that I don’t.

I think the Spirit of life is speaking to people all of the time, but we often miss the message because we are not ready to hear what He is saying. Make enough to live, but also enough to give.

Everyone should pull their own weight if they are able, and try to avoid being a burden to others. This is not always possible, and we should both come to the aid of people when they cannot help themselves and also allow others to help us when we find ourselves in the same fix. Strive to be self-sufficient not only to avoid being a burden to others but also able to be a blessing to others. Put in more than you take out.

Strive to be self-sufficient not only to avoid being a burden to others but also able to be a blessing to others. Put in more than you take out.
