“Empathy is about standing in someone else's shoes, feeling with his or her heart, seeing with his or her eyes.” Daniel Pink

We can listen with our eyes, and our heart as much as with our ears. When we listen to someone, we should try to see the world through their eyes. We can listen so well that we not only know what someone has said, but we can feel the emotion in their words. Listen to see what they see, and to feel what they feel. God showed us that He was serious about listening to us when Christ put on a pair of our sandals and lived in them.

“When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them…” Matt.9.36 Conversations Within” ts 1/25/2017

”Listening is not waiting to talk.” Scott Ginsberg

This quote hits me right between the eyes. If I am to improve my listening skills I can start not only by keeping my mouth closed, but also by directing my thoughts to what is being said not what I want to say in return. Sweet humility inclines us to be learners before we become teachers. Someone has said, “The biggest communication problem is we do not listen to understand. We listen to reply.”

"Let everyone be quick to listen, slow to speak..." James 1:19 Conversations Within” ts 1/24/2017

“God gave us mouths that close and ears that don't. That should tell us something.” Eugene O'Neill.

Am I prepared to listen to others? Do I have a listening ear and empathetic heart? One way we express genuine love to people is by listening to them, really listening. Someone has said that God gave us two ears and one mouth so that we would listen twice as much as we speak. Learn to listen and listen to learn. One thing is for certain, we cannot listen with our ears if our mouth is running. When we see someone approaching, we should prepare ourselves to listen not talk.

“Filter your pain through the brevity of this life and the unending beauty of the next.” Max Lucado

It is actually a blessing that we do not live forever in this place of suffering and selfishness. It is the goodness of God that He has placed limits how long we must endure the pains of life. We do not need to lament this brief season no more than we lament the passing of winter into spring. Everything beautiful in this season will follow us into the next, but touched with the newness of the eternal spring.
“What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.” James 4 “Your lovingkindness is better than life.” Ps. 63 Conversations Within” ts 1/20/2017

"As a well-spent day brings happy sleep, so a life well spent brings happy death." - Leonardo da Vinci

It has been suggested not just to live it one day at a time, but one moment at a time. Take a breath and be where your are. Every moment has great value, but only when we use it for things of lasting value. The sun of a good day rises in the skies of a good heart and a good life is the sum of many good days. Be sure and have a good day!

“A man who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.” Mark Twain

I believe one of the great challenges of life is simply accepting God’s invitation to join Him in the joys of the present moment. Live wholeheartedly! A heart fully present embraces life by savoring each moment as a wonderful and delightful privilege. The skill of wholehearted living is acquired when we wake to everything around us, but also by waking to everything within us. Body and soul, soul and body fused in the moment.  Such moments touch the eternal.

“So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.” Ps.90.12 Conversations Within” ts 1/18/2017

“Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” Vicki Corona

There is wisdom when we learn to value the time given us. It leads us to focus our energies on the quality of life rather than quantity of it. If we spend all of our time trying to get more time, we can miss out on the time we have now. I am not saying that we should not eat right, exercise, and take care of ourselves, but our motive should not be to live longer. Rather it should be to live fuller, richer, and deeper. People of faith understand that the soul will survive death. The quality of our interactions each day will follow us into the next life.

“Time is the currency of life. Invest it wisely.” (Several people have said this)

The average life expectancy in the US is almost 80 years. Converted to days this comes to 29200 sunrises and sunsets. That I am now 60 means that if I live to be 80 I only have 7300 days left to me. To put it another way I have only 19 more Christmas celebrations. Sobering to say the least, especially when we consider that none of us knows if we'll even make the average. Anybody can check out at anytime. Time is irreplaceable! Respect it. Embrace it! Live it! Enjoy it! Use it to bear fruit for the life to come.

“The most essential life skill is teachability.” David Murry

There are times I am uncomfortable about asking God to teach me something because I am afraid of what He might do to teach it to me. We must get over the notion that the only way God can teach us is by some hard and painful experience. I think the Spirit prefers that we pleasantly learn and live rather than painfully live and learn. Of course if we are stubborn, He may very well have to use an unpleasant experience to instruct us. Having a teachable spirit is the one thing that can change that. God does not have to get our attention if He always has it.

“Be not like a horse or a mule, without understanding, which must be curbed with bit and bridle, or it will not stay near you. Ps.32 “Conversations Within” ts 1/15/2017

"Life is a shipwreck but we must not forget to sing in the lifeboats." Voltaire

We have zero control over many of the difficulties that come our way, yet it is affirmed in collective wisdom that we have absolute control over the attitude we take towards them. One way to express our hope of goodness at such times is by singing. Things like smiling and singing not only express a trusting attitude, they powerfully reinforce one. Sing away sadness, make melody in malady and heal the hurts of the world.

“I will sing to the LORD as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have being.” Ps.104 “Conversations Within” ts 1/13/2017

“People who wonder if the glass is half empty or half full miss the point. The glass is refillable.” Meme

Do I have a problem-solving attitude? It is easy to surrender to pessimism. A positive approach to life will refuse any attitude that tries to talk us into throwing in the towel when dealing with life’s difficulties. Often we must ignore our own pessimism if we are to get down to the business of dealing with life’s unpleasantries. Don’t sit sullenly on it. Solve it!

“The optimist says, "My cup runneth over, what a blessing." The pessimist says, "My cup runneth over, what a mess.” Meme

There is great value knowing how very blessed we are. Such a positive attitude enables us not only to see the goodness that surrounds us, but to put hope in God for more goodness to come. The hope that we have in the resurrection of Christ should lead us to purge any negative feelings about our future and plunge us into the peacefulness of faith because we are promised to share in everything His coming Kingdom has to offer.

”Failure is a part of innovation -- perhaps the most important part.” Curt Richardson

A pass or fail mentality is not the best way to approach life. If we fail at something, and we all do, we can always try again. A large part of success is learning how to bounce back. Golfers know that if you hit the ball into the woods, you don’t quit playing the game, you go hit it back into the fairway. There is nothing so important as a good recovery shot, except perhaps an attitude to always attempt one.

“For a righteous man falls seven times, and rises again…” Prov.14 “Conversations Within” ts 1/10/2017

”It is better to light a candle than curse the darkness.” Chinese Proverb

One characteristic of positive people is that they are problem solvers. When confronted with something wrong, they immediately spring into action to solve the problem rather than complain about it. A positive attitude results in positive action. We should work the problem, not our mouth. It is better to spring into positive action, not negative accusations.

”Some persons grumble because God placed thorns among roses. Why not thank God because He placed roses among thorns?” Benjamin Franklin

One very important part of becoming a positive person, perhaps the most important part, is learning to live gratefully! One way to accomplish this is by training our eyes to see the good that surrounds us no matter what our circumstances. Everything that tempts us to worry, or complain, or to place blame, is also an opportunity to see how God can use it for good. There is always something to be grateful about. Make a habit even a game of finding it.

Consider the contrast in the simple verse, “But you belong to God.” Such an understanding should affect every single thing in our life. I may want to be selfish, but I belong to God. If we belong to God, then surely He belongs to us. If we are His to be enjoyed, then surely He is ours to enjoy also. This is the great circle of belonging. “I am sure I must belong somewhere.” Unknown

God is the great and good Shepherd, and we are His--His to love, to cherish, and to look after with tender affection. Is this not the quintessential belonging. He is not only the Great Shepherd of the sheep, He is the Good Shepherd. What would His goodness be without His greatness to insure it? What would His greatness be without His goodness to give it meaning? Remember the childhood prayer: “God is great, God is good!” Declare it everyday to your heart!

Beyond self-preservation, there are some very good reasons for us to take care of our body. We should take care of ourselves not only for ourselves but so we can also contribute goodness to others. If a mother does not care for herself how can she care for her children? If we do not care for our bodies how can we offer it to God in useful service? Our body is the first resource entrusted to us. "Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile." Albert Einstein

It is a privilege to live one’s life for the benefit of others--to serve a cause greater than ourselves. We can all join the dance and find our place in the circle. Everyone can contribute to the welfare of the whole. Some people give meaning to others simply because they need some service from them. We may of course look at such people as burdens, but in reality they are God’s blessing, if only to teach us the delights of love. What can I do this day to serve the people in my life?

Without it we amble selfishly along. We live to be be enjoyed by family, friends, and our Maker. We also live to enjoy them, to discover and lay hold of the value of these wonderful relationships--of loving and being loved, of serving and being served.

“Be kind to every kind, not just mankind.” Anthony Douglas Williams

Because kindness is a way of living, it flows from individuals who choose to live this way into the lives of every living thing around them. A kind person is kind to everybody and everything. God is said to feed the birds of the air. I suppose that sometimes He does this when we put up a bird feeder in our yard. He uses us this way. Being kind to an animal is divinely inspired.

“The righteous care for the needs of their animals…” Prov.12 Conversations Within” ts 12/31/2016

"Kindness is loving people more than they deserve." - Joseph Joubert

Wisdom is borne to us on the wings of a grateful heart. An earnest appreciation of the way that God deals with us will incline us to show it in our choices. Choose goodness because God is good and has been so very good to us. Bathe in His lovingkindness and know that He does not treat us as our sins deserve but with grace and mercy. Nor should we treat others as they deserve, but in keeping with the kindness we want and receive from God.

“I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear.” Martin Luther King Jr.

To love even your enemies is one hallmark of Christian love. Jesus preceded His encouragement to do so with these words, “But I tell you…” In other words, It may seem right to most people to hate those who hate you, “but I tell you” to love them. The expression, “But I tell you,” is another hallmark of what it means to be a follower. It does not matter what the world thinks, the stamp of authenticity for the Christian is to care only for what God commands.

"Kindness is not an act, it's a lifestyle." Anthony Douglas

To live a life of love is to live a life of kindness. Kindness is one measure of true love. Is what I am about to say kind? Does this action I am about to do express kindness? Am I a kind person or do I simply express kindness every now and then? Well, we have to start somewhere I suppose. Odds are that there is something within our reach this very moment that is providing an opportunity to express a kindness to someone.

“Be the reason someone believes in the goodness of people.” Karen Salmansohn

The world is in such desperate need of kindness, we should all go out of our way to show it. We should not let a hurried life keep us from showing kindness to others. Slow down for kindness. Offer a place in line to a mother with kids at a crowded grocery store.  Be extraordinarily and consistently kind!

“My religion is kindness.” Dalai Lama

If there is anything we should practice religiously it is simply to be kind. If there is one way to do so, it is to forgive. Forgive often. Forgive without being asked to do so. Do it for no other reason than because God is so willing to forgive us, not because we deserve it, but because Christ died for it. Kindness is the smile of God when we thought to see His anger. We are never more like Christ, than when we express this kind of kindness.

“And be kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.” Eph.4 Conversations Within” ts 12/26/2016
