“Look to the LORD and his strength; seek his face always.” Ps.105.4 NIV
There is good cause to seek God’s strength in this place. Not just opportunities to seek Him mind you but good reasons for doing so. Our need to walk in God’s strength is not due simply to the trouble we face each day. God is the very strength of life and our eternal inheritance. Our need to be joined to Him in faith, hope and love is the essence of existence. We were born to it; created for this denouement. We are the mirrors made for His reflection. It may now be for some only a vacuum--an emptiness that longs to be filled but it is there. We may try to fill it with many things but only the life of God in our soul will bring unity to our broken lives. 6/29/2009 Conversations Within ts
Grace modeste- an "unassuming grace." Any discussion of a spiritual nature should reflect this mutual kindness. The following are simply my devotional reflections each morning. I cast them like "bread upon the waters," hoping that all who find them will find something of value to nurture their own inner life.

“It's the circle of life, and it moves us all, through despair and hope...
...through faith and love, 'till we find our place, on the path unwinding” Elton John
“The lions roar for their prey and seek their food from God.”
Whenever I watch a Wild Kingdom kind of show, I always pull for whatever animal is being chased down by the lion. Silly me, if the lion doesn’t take down prey, they and their cubs would die a slow and agonizing death. Lions depend on the mercy of their Creator in the circle of life and death as much as their grass grazing prey. How is the Creator’s mercy expressed in the death of every living thing? In effect, the present order is a school of learning. One lesson being taught is that suffering and death are the consequence of a world in rebellion against its Maker. This lesson serves as the backdrop of life’s most important lesson-the glory of God in the face of Christ who has come to buy it back. 6/26/2009 Conversations Within ts

“Wisdom is knowing what to do next, skill is knowing how to do it, and virtue is doing it.” David Starr
“Praise the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.” Ps.103.2
When God tells us to sing His praise, it is not for His benefit but for our own. He invites us to shower in His refreshing waters to wash away to worries of this world. The interesting thing about being at peace or being worried is that it is much like being wet or being dry. You are either in the water-at peace, or out of the water-worried. Praise is one way to step into the shower. Consider another analogy, the benefit is not just knowing that the water in the glass will quench your thirst but from tuning up the cup and drinking. 6/25/2009 Conversations Within ts

Rescue me! Aretha Franklin
“He will respond to the prayer of the destitute.” Ps.102.17 NIV
We do not need to be concerned that God will answer the prayers of the destitute. Our concern should be that we realize when we are. And, if we understand what Jesus meant when He said, blessed are the poor in spirit and those who mourn, then we are all destitute. One rarely calls for help if they see no need to do so and Jesus is telling us that our spiritual poverty before God is great. But once we see this about ourselves, let us cry out, for we are promised that we will surely be rescued. What a sense of humor! Even as I write this reflection, Aretha’s song, just came up on my iPod shuffle list. 6/24/2009 Conversations Within ts

“The good ole days weren't always good.” Billy Joel
“I will set no worthless thing before my eyes.” Ps.101.3 NASB
My father has said and always with a measure of disgust, that certain people acting a certain way are “low down and good for nothing.” If my daddy spoke Hebrew, he would use the expression “Sons of Belial.” The word “belial” is translated here by our word worthless and low down and good for nothing would work just as well. Life is too valuable to waste it on unprofitable activity. I am not speaking of down time of course, because rest in proper proportion to labor is certainly profitable because it re-creates the stores of energy. But if our chosen recreation doesn’t re-create it just might be low down and good for nothing and if we are not careful we might be as well. 6/23/2009 Conversations Within ts

“Faithful are the wounds of a friend.”
“His faithfulness continues through all generations.” Ps.100.5
Whenever I think of the Lord’s faithfulness, I immediately think of my own disloyalty. This is not only sad; it also takes something away from my celebration of His great reliability. So, let my soul consider Father’s fidelity as I may. In one sense, Dad is never loyal to a fault as we say. That is, His loyalty never causes harm when He intends good. His loyalty like His love is governed by His wisdom. He tells us faithfully that He is not going anywhere--that He will never leave or relax His hold on us. Yet, faithfulness often compels Him to withdraw His peace when we are walking where it is not good to walk. He may withdraw His peace but never His grace. At such times Father is loyal to a fault but it is our own. 6/22/2009 Conversations Within ts

“They called on the LORD and he answered them.” Ps.99.6 NIV
Here is a fitting epitaph, something of great value to be remembered by. Let it be said, “They called on the Lord and He answered them.” The thief on the cross is given but few words in the Scriptures yet He is remembered as one who called on the Lord. Why is he remembered? Well, not because his grand accomplishments in life, rather because the Lord answered him in the hour of his death. Here is one we know for sure whose name is written in the book of life. What we accomplish in life will mean nothing if we have not humbly called on the Lord. 6/20/2009 Conversations Within ts

“He will judge the world in righteousness…” Ps.98.8 NIV
I have spent a good many days apprehensive about Judgment. This is changing though. I am coming to appreciate the trustworthiness of the Judge. Abraham once said, “Will not the Judge of all the earth will do what is right.” Who is better qualified than God to sit behind the Bench. The mystery of Jesus is that without compromising justice in the least, God will be able to show mercy, the limits of which are as far-reaching as the heavens are above the earth. 6/19/2009 Conversations Within ts

“Do not blame God for having created the tiger, but thank him for not having given it wings” Indian Proverb
“The LORD reigns, let the earth be glad.” Ps.97.1
It shames me to confess it, but sometimes my belief in God’s sovereignty makes me angry with Him. Instead of humbling accepting life, I will blame Him for silly things, like something breaking even when I was the one who knocked it off the counter. I reason that He could have prevented it and complain that He didn’t or even childishly suggest that He pushed me, so to speak. When I do this sort of thing, I am taking Murphy’s Law theologically and personally. Even though I apologize later, such an attitude suggests my arrogant misunderstanding that God should make life easy for me. The Lord indeed reigns. Let me glad even when He permits hardship. It may well be that teaching me humility is high on His agenda for that day. 6/18/2009 Conversations Within ts

An offering is not a tax on life; it is the overflow of love for God and naturally, what concerns Him.
“Bring an offering…” Ps.96.8 NIV
I should think it important to keep life in perspective. The air we breathe, the land we live upon, the very processes, which sustain us, come from God. We are simple stewards and as such, we are encouraged to render to Him all that is due Him. Our lives are offered to the Lord in the particulars, which stem from life itself. We offer Him what He has entrusted to us-money, time, talent. According to Jesus, giving to God is one prescribed method where He actually gives to us. We offer Him thanks and He gives us an appreciative spirit. We offer Him our possessions and He multiplies them like seed. We offer Him our service and He creates community between people. What offering will I bring to the Lord this day? 6/17/2009 Conversations Within ts

“We are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care.” Ps.95.7 NIV
In the midst of all that concerns me, let my soul consider that I am under the care of my God. He watches over all my affairs and assures all who look to Him, that where He guides He provides. Perhaps this is another way of saying that God will provide but only where He will guide. It may also mean that God often guides in the manner that He provides. The good Lord has been known to dry up the brook where we are, to lead us up to greener pastures where He wants us to be. Wherever and however He leads, if we are to know the peace of the Shepherd, we must surely trust the heart of the Shepherd. 6/16/2009 Conversations Within ts

“Winners forget they’re in a race, they just love to run.” With Honors
“Blessed is the man you discipline, O LORD.” Ps.94/12 NIV
We may not feel blessed when disciplined by God but it is a sure sign of His commitment to our maturity. I should think that discipline comes many times in the form of a simple opportunity to practice patience, love, faith or whatever else God desires to work in us. Of course, discipline is good for us only when we allow it to train us. When we don’t c0-operate lessons may need repeating. And, lessons may need repeating merely to turn obedience into character. In any case, we will enjoy life more when we accept discipline just as the athlete accepts conditioning as necessary to play the game. 6/15/2009 Conversations Within ts

“Science began with belief in a Lawmaker.” C. S. Lewis
“the seas have lifted up their pounding waves.” Ps.93.3 NIV
After the Enlightenment, we came to understand the forces of gravity as both the cause as well as that, which keeps the pounding waves in place. Christians see no contradiction between true science and true faith. Science helps us discover natural law; faith helps us discover the hand that moves the hand of nature. Christians believe God uses natural means. It is the kind hand of our personal Lord, which keeps the waves from marching a path of destruction across the earth. Gravity is simply the tool in His hand. 6/12/2009 Conversations Within ts

“We praise what we prize.” John Piper
“It is good to praise the LORD” Ps.92.1 NIV
To know God’s value and to declare it to our heart is of great value itself. Praise reminds us of all that God is to those who trust Him. Praise refreshes weary souls with strength. It renews our sense of purpose, the enjoyment of fellowship with the Father and Son in all things and at all times. Praise is the sharing of beauty, the completion of our most profound adoration. It is the strumming of the strings, the playing of the keys, the very essence that answers who we are, why we are and what has lasting value. Praise the LORD! 6/11/2009 Conversations Within ts

“The trick to forgetting the big picture is to look at everything close up.” Chuck Palahniuk
“…then no harm will befall you, no disaster will come near your tent.” Ps.91.10 NKJV
When will no harm befall us? Well, certainly when this is God’s will and it does not conflict with the big picture. Harm surely fell to Christ and to the disciples that followed Him because it was God’s will to accomplish something permanent by sacrificing something temporary. But we may rest in the knowledge that nothing can touch us unless God permits it. And, since all things work together for the good of those who love Him when He allows something to harm us, it will ultimately turn out to help us. Are we mincing words? Not at all, for if it is God’s desire that no harm befall us, then no harm shall, no harm at all. But a child might regard the nurse’s needle as a threat when the parent knows better. To fully appreciate the violent strokes of the Artist we must wait to see the whole and completed canvas. 6/10/2009 Conversations Within ts

The most influential people in my life are probably not even aware of the things they've taught me.” Scott Adams
“Yes, establish the work of our hands.” Ps.90.17 NKJV
One humbling view of life is expressed in these poetic words: “Take a bucket and fill it with water, Put your hand in it up to the wrist, Pull it out and the hole that's remaining Is a measure of how you will be missed.” I guess this is one way of looking at our impact in life. But put salt in that same hand and when removed the water will be changed--maybe not to the eye (fame), but certainly to the taste (fruit). Jesus does not call us to be famous but fruitful. He also said that we are the salt of the earth and His presence in us, if released, is sure to change the lives around us. Those who seek fame will be as the hand removed from the water. Those who seek to serve as the salt that is left behind. 6/9/2009 Conversations Within ts

“Every portrait that is painted with feeling is a portrait of the artist, not of the sitter.” Oscar Wilde
“Your faithfulness also surrounds You.” Ps.89.8 NKJV
We may wonder why this verse does not say. “Your faithfulness surrounds me.” But God’s faithfulness is said to surround Him because when all is gathered around Him, everything will reflect His faithfulness. We are the exhibits of His faithfulness just as the intricate honeycomb is of the bee. His own faithfulness surrounds Him because He is faithful in grace, faithful in provision, faithful to preserve His own until the day of Christ. When Jesus returns it is said that His reward will return with Him. We are His reward, the work of His faithful hands. “Doom, despair and agony on me, deep dark depression and excessive misery.” Hee Haw
“the darkness is my closest friend.” Ps.88.18
This Psalm begins in despair and ends in dismal misery. Some days are like that in this place, when the best that we can do is to say that darkness is our closest companion. When we see someone we love going through such trial, we want to help them. Knowing how can be tough. We must give people room to grieve and to expresses their sorrow. Such times are not great moments for commentary or advice. It is best to keep quiet vigil with those sitting in the dark. The light that will help them to the other side is often just sitting with them in silent sympathy. I remember the powerful scene in the movie Shadowlands, when C. S. Lewis was grieving the death of his wife and seeking to comfort her son. The bereaved boy said, “I don’t believe in heaven.” Lewis simply replies, “That's okay.” 6/7/2009 Conversations Within ts

A nation is lead astray when it’s individual citizens drift from the values, which founded it. The drifting is usually gradual. Nations drift because the individuals who make up it citizenry waft. A nation’s need to be restored is our need, my need to be restored. We need restoring grace because we are “prone to wander.” Our thoughts are like marbles on an unleveled table. All seasons are beautiful for the person who carries happiness within. Horace Friess:
“Blessed are those whose strength is in you.” Ps.84.5 ESV
When I consider that the word “blessed” might also be translated “happy,” it forces me to think about what makes me happy. I have experienced the difference between pleasure and joy and although many pleasures bring me joy not all of them do; I speak of course of unlawful or stolen pleasures. Sometimes when I have tasted a pleasure, even a lawful one and have done so without the strength of God--I mean guided by Him, every pleasure not only fails to bring joy, without His fellowship they inevitably produce misery. Happy is the person who is guided by the strength of Christ’s presence in everything they do. Amazingly, His presence can turn even hardship into joy. 6/3/2009 Conversations Within ts

On the Murder of a Murderer.
“Give place to the wrath of God.” Rom.12
I was asked the other day what thoughts I had about the murder of Dr. Tiller the infamous late term abortionist. Those who believe that abortion is the murder of innocent life may be tempted to say that the man who shot him simply stopped a murderer from committing other intended murders. But, this vigilante clearly took to himself what God has assigned to government. By doing so, he stepped outside God’s appointed means for administering justice and became an injustice himself. Many passages in the whole of Scripture indicate that certain kinds of justice should be collectively administered. Of course we should collectively and diligently work to end the slaughter of the unborn, probably the greatest injustice of our time. 6/2/2009 Conversations Within ts

“O God, do not keep silence.” Ps.83.1 ESV
Here is the cry of our heart; that God would speak to us. For Him to do so is life and health and peace. The Almighty speaks and it happens. With a word, the Lord decides and the works of our hands prosper; health courses though our bones and still waters rule our hearts. We pray that He would not be silent. We not only want the Lord to speak to us, we want Him to speak for us. We pray that He would reply to those who oppress others; that He would answer those who wage war. Speak Lord, as You have spoke and create the world anew in Christ. 6/1/2009 Conversations Within ts

“The acorn doesn’t fall far from the tree; or it shouldn’t.”
“I said, “You are gods, sons of the Most High, all of you.” Ps.82.6 ESV
God poetically tells His children that they are gods; gods with a little “g” that is. Made in His image, we each have powers, properties and influences. And, though the Father’s next sentence is that, “like men you will die,” He enjoins us to use what resources and influences we have to help the poor and needy and to seek justice for the oppressed. In other words, we are to act like Him as best we may and with His help --the little “g” acting on behalf of the big “G.” 6/1/2009 Conversations Within ts
