“Years ago, fairy tales all began with Once upon a time... now we know they all begin with, If I am elected.” Carolyn Warner
“exceedingly great and precious promises…” 2Pt.1.4 NKJV
Imagine life without hope. Life would hardly be life without hope and a future. Such an existence would be daunting even fit the desperate descriptions of hell. A great many of our hopes are tied inseparably to promise. Where humans are concerned, there is room for doubt but where God is concerned, promises are another matter. To worry is to forget the character of the One who has made them. We are assured that because it is impossible for God to lie, no one who hopes in His promises will ever be disappointed. How precious is hope and equally precious the promises which create and sustain it. 9/29/2009 Conversations Within ts
Grace modeste- an "unassuming grace." Any discussion of a spiritual nature should reflect this mutual kindness. The following are simply my devotional reflections each morning. I cast them like "bread upon the waters," hoping that all who find them will find something of value to nurture their own inner life.

“Do you plan a tower that will pierce the clouds? Lay first the foundation of humility.” Saint Augustine
“But may the God of all grace… settle you.” 1Pt.5.10
If you have ever tried to stack boxes, you know the bottom box has to be level, strong and broad enough to support the rest. Every good foundation possesses these simple qualities so it is no surprise when Jesus tells us to build our house on the solid rock of His words. His teaching would have us ask the simple question, if I decide to do this, can I continue to stack on it. In other words, is this really the direction I want to go if it will it eventually fall over? Is the base large enough not only in this life but also in the next? Is the quality of what I do today strong enough to support what I am required to do tomorrow? 9/28/2009 Conversations Within ts

“Confidence is the bond of friendship.” Publilius Syrus
“…casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.” 1Pt5.7 NKJV
When I am present with You, truly present and rest in all You are, telling You my care is so much like a child showing his mother a skinned knee, persuaded that she knows what to do to make it all better. But I am not always thus and my suspicions blind me to Your goodness. Forgive me dear Mother. 9/26/2009 Conversations Within ts

“For we have not followed cunningly devised fables,...
...when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.”
“…a partaker of the glory that will be revealed.” 1Pt.5.1
Peter is telling us that he witnessed a dead man rise from the grave. He saw the resurrected Christ not just a resuscitated man barely back from the dead. Peter was one among many who saw Jesus not only alive but alive and well. I for one cannot simply dismiss the eyewitness testimony of credible men and women who claim to have witnessed someone conquer death. These people do not write as religious fanatics or as co-conspirators of a cruel hoax. I have good reason to believe them as I would believe any person of creditable reputation. It is more than blind faith that shapes the worldview of the Christian. 9/25/2009 Conversations Within ts

“You've got to love what you're doing..."
"... If you love it, you can overcome…all the aches and pains, and continue to play for a long, long time.” Gordie Howe
Therefore let those who suffer according to the will of God commit their souls to Him in doing good, as to a faithful Creator. 1Pt.4.19 NIV
Faith makes it possible I suppose, to render most suffering an experience for God’s glory. Suffering for doing the right thing certainly is but how can my arthritis be suffering for the Lord. I think anytime we commit our souls to God’s in the midst of affliction, if only to accept it graciously we honor Him. We do this even though we may not be expecting Him to heal but just to give us the grace to endure it simply as one more item He promises work for our good and for His glory. 9/24/2009 Conversations Within ts

“Dogmatism is puppyism come to its full growth” Douglas Jerrold
“If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God.” 1Pt.4.11 NIV
I have grown less dogmatic through the years. I find myself wanting to speak in terms of what “might” be rather than what “is.” It is not that I doubt the existence of absolute truth but I have doubts about my knowing it, at least in areas where there is little or no consensus of interpretation among God’s people. So how does the preacher or teacher speak as the oracle of God in such a divided climate? Well, I think we may speak with great confidence where there is and always has been consensus. And, there is plenty in Scripture that is straightforward and clear; without dabbling in the unclear passages. But it may be that dogmatism isn’t the point of saying, “Thus sayeth the Lord.” Perhaps what is in view is that we should keep our mouth shut until we are sure He would have us speak and thus speaking, speak His words not our own. 9/23/2009 Conversations Within ts

“I have wasted my hours” Leonardo da Vinci
“You have spent enough time in the past doing what the heathen like to do.” 1Pt.4.3 GNB
I hate to waste time, so it such a contradiction for me to confess that my every selfish moment is a total waste. But I live as a contradiction. I cannot number the times I have said to myself that I will not waste another moment in anger or selfishness. But I still do. Inconsistent soul that I am, what else is there to do but to press on, to take hold of that which has laid hold of me. Let me agree with in this Lord Jesus and somehow remain in this moment, until such time as I pass into that complete oneness that You have with Your Father. 9/22/2009 Conversations Within ts

“Tolerance means to value the right of another person to hold beliefs that you know are absolutely wrong."
“But do this with gentleness and respect.” 1Pt.3.15
The other day Brenda and I had breakfast with a Priestess of Paganism and her husband who happened to be an atheist. We sat around and spoke about our very different beliefs. The dialogue was honest and respectful. I have found that most people will express genuine interest in your story if you express sincere interest in theirs. Before we explain to people that Jesus is the answer, we may need to give them an opportunity to ask a question. We should live our lives in such a manner that its sweet aroma will move those around us to ask what cologne we are wearing. 9/21/2009 Conversations Within ts

“What we are is God's gift to us. What we become is our gift to God.” Eleanor Powell
“…bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing.” 1Pt.3.9
One year around Christmas, I was looking for an illustration to use in a message and came across a story about a little girl who picked up a bow and put it on her head. She ran up to her daddy who was reading in the next room and excitedly said, ‘Look Daddy, I’m a present.” I should think this a great way to live-not to have the opinion that we are God’s gift to others but to live in such a manner that they have found us to be. Not a bad epitaph written by family and friends: “A blessing to everyone who knew them.” 9/18/2009 Conversations Within ts

“Love of beauty is Taste. The creation of beauty is Art.” Ralph Waldo Emerson
“…the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight.” 1Pt.3.4 NIV
I remember one homely looking girl in college, homely that is until I had several conversations with her. She looked better every time we conversed. Even then, as immature as I was, I realized that I was being drawn to the beauty of her soul. I have since met some rather physically attractive women whose beauty seem to fade after I would get to know them. The ambiance reflected by our inner life eventually shows through to those around us. Beauty is often like the pearl, encased in an unattractive shell yet discovered in the quiet expressions of a humble soul. 9/16/2009 Conversations Within ts

“Man has two great spiritual needs. One is for forgiveness. The other is for goodness.” Billy Graham
“…he entrusted himself to him who judges justly.” 1Pt.2.23 NIV
Who better to decide our case than the God of Christ? Jesus taught us that we should be perfect even as the Father in heaven is perfect and then by His death and resurrection created a way that would guaranteed that we will be. We are given the choice to present our case and merit to the Judge or to allow Jesus to present His case and merit. And glory of glories, our perfection by Christ will be more than a judicial pronouncement but an actual metamorphosis of worm to celestial beauty. 9/15/2009 Conversations Within ts

“An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.” Gandhi
“For it is commendable if a man bears up under the pain of unjust suffering because he is conscious of God.” 1Pt.2.19 NIV
I am easily angered by injustice, especially where I am concerned. It is interesting that Christian love directs us to at least, two different responses to injustice. The first is to aggressively seek justice for others when they are abused; the second is to silently endure it where we are concerned. We may understand why God would have us correct an injustice when it involves others but then question why He asks us endure injustice when it comes our way. I think it has something to do with which direction the arrow of our concern is pointing. We naturally seek our own benefit but Christ would have us seek the benefit of others, which is exactly what we do when we turn the cheek to an injustice. He is also granting us a unique privilege. He is asking if we would seek just ice for other and leave matters that concern us up to Him. He promises to set everything right. We may be surprised at what “right” really looks like. 9/14/2009 Conversations Within ts

Good works are links that form a chain of love. Mother Teresa
“For it is God's will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish men.” 1Pt.2.15 NIV
I have never heard anyone being justly critical of Mother Theresa. I am sure she had her critics but it is hard to speak negative about someone who did so many positive things. Doing good is what Christian love is all about and it is what Christ would have His follower be about. I think the Church in modern society has largely drawn criticism because rhetoric has replaced good works. What is sobering is not the criticism the church is receiving but that we are now moving into an era where the Church is simply being ignored. Nobody cares what the evangelical church is saying. The salt has lost its savor and largely because we talk too much and do so little. 9/13/2009 Conversations Within ts

“Mercy me!”
“Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God.” 1Pt.2.10
A casual glance at people, strongly suggests that we are made for socialization. A large part of our individuality is our need to share some sense of community with others, to belong to a herd so to speak. We may create or join any number of social circles even if our interaction with others in the circle is only in persona, the lone wolf or eccentric person for example. One group that Brenda and I belong to is the FJ Cruiser clan. There is that sense of kinship when we meet another FJ owner and unless you belong to the group, it may be difficult to know exactly what defines it. What defines the persona of those who belong to the people of God? The one that follows in this passage is a good one. “Once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.” Unless one has received mercy, it may be hard to convey to those who haven’t what it means to belong to those who have. Christ, let your mercy be a large part of who I am. 9/12/2009 Conversations Within ts

"...and accept as something precious what comes back to you from them.” Albert Schweitzer
“…this stone is precious… 1Pt.2.7 NIV
One thing we must do, if we are to follow Jesus, is to let His Spirit teach us to value what He values. What is precious to me? My wife, my children, my life; these things are dear to me. But is obedience to God something I cherish? Jesus certainly does and even valued it more precious than preserving His own life. Is helping the destitute precious to me? My first thought is yes. But if I am honest, I divide the destitute into two classes-the deserving and the undeserving. Who doesn’t value helping the needy when life has dealt them a blow? But do I value helping the destitute that are because they are lazy. Well to do that Lord Jesus, I would need to value grace wouldn’t I? 9/11/2009 Conversations Within ts

Just because you’re being real, doesn’t mean you’re right.
“Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind.” 1Pt.2.1 NIV
The word 'hypocrite' used to refer to an actor, or performer. Today we use it to describe a person who professes or believes one thing but does another. Now does this mean am I being hypocritical if I am courteous to someone when what I really want to do is give them a piece of my mind? I mean if I were real and genuine, wouldn’t I rid myself of pretense, never fake it, and simply tell people what I really think? Well, just being real and genuine isn’t always the point is it? I may be genuinely rude or sincerely unloving and if that is the case, I should get real with myself and recognize it for what it is. Just because you’re not faking it doesn’t mean you’re acting the way you’re supposed act. Just because you’re being real, doesn’t mean you’re right. 9/10/2009 Conversations Within ts

“When the national flag is worn beyond repair,..
...burn it thoroughly and completely on a modest, but blazing, fire.” Boy Scouts of America
“For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.” 1Pt.1.23
I have always found it difficult to throw away an old worn out Bible, even when I couldn’t use it anymore because it was falling apart. Others seem to have this problem with various sacred items. This is why there are discussions on the proper way to discard a worn out American flag. But God’s word is not the physical print, the perishable paper and ink, no more so, than a flag is the country it represents. God words are living and enduring even if every copy of the Bible were somehow destroyed. Christians do not worship a book or at least they shouldn’t. The main reason we reverence the Scriptures and hold them sacred, isn’t just that God inspired them, but that He still speaks in them. There is value in what God has said to past generations but of first importance what is the living God saying to us this very day? 9/9/2009 Conversations Within ts

Write with blood: and you will discover that blood is spirit.” Friedrich Nietzsche
For you know that it was not with perishable things…that you were redeemed…but with the precious blood of Christ…” 1Pt.1.18-19 NIV
When the Apostle elevates the precious blood of Christ above perishable matter, he probably wasn’t referring to the physical corpora of cells that flowed from the wounds of Jesus but the redeeming value of His sinless sacrifice. Perishable blood became imperishable by what it secured when it was spilt. The blood of every solider shed on the battlefield of freedom is elevated with similar distinction. The import of this can be measured on many levels. One is that physical matter—that, which is perishable, may be used to secure something spiritual and imperishable. This is not to say that we may buy heaven with money. But certainly perishable money can be used in such a manner that it secures imperishable reward. But so can our time, our house, our car, whatever we employ for spiritual purposes. Our physical lives are not meant to be preserved but sacrificed. 9/7/2009 Conversations Within ts

“Discipline is remembering what you want.” David Campbell
“…be self-controlled…” 1Pt.1.13 NIV
Self-government is a discipline that actually increases, rather than decreases our enjoyment of life’s pleasures. And, it does so precisely by limiting our participation in them. How so? I am a fan of pianist George Winston and especially of his “Winter” album. Knowing my tendencies toward over indulgence I decided years ago to limit how often I play this particular album. Everyone who’s ever played a song over and over, knows that you can actually become sick of listening to a song you started out loving. By limiting the number of times I listen to this album, I have never grown tired of it and actually enjoy it more every time I reserve it for special moments. When we acquire the taste for one less bite, we nurture in ourselves the seeds of heaven placed there by Christ. I used to think heaven a place where we could eat all we wanted and never gain weight but more than likely, Christ will have changed us so that we will not want to eat like a pig when we get there. 9/7/2009 Conversations Within ts

“And, can it be that I should gain, an interest in the Savior’s blood.” Charles Wesley
“Even angels long to look into these things.” 1Pt.1.12 NIV
People have varying degrees of interest in spiritual matters. For some, religion is the only they talk about, others rarely speak of spiritual matters at all. But the same may be said for any number of areas especially where health is concerned. Exercise, nutrition, in fact many profitable matters see these two extremes. Both exaggeration and apathy are part of the fragmentation of living in our fallen world. Jesus has come to restore our fascination with life and as we cooperate with Him we should probably see an integrated fascination with everything. Music is harmonious when bass and treble are integrated. The boom boom boom of bass in some modern music reminds me of overly religious people and music with no bass at all, of those who never mention God. 9/6/2009 Conversations Within ts

“When men climb on a great mountain together, the rope between them…is a symbol of men banded together in a common effort…” Anonymous
“Who are kept by the power of God through faith…” 1Pt.1.5 KJV
God stands watch over our faith like the diligent mother watching over her toddler playing by a pool. Our faith is protected by God because it is precious to Him. All our interactions with Him require faith, so He is sure to tend its fire and fan its flame. If the Lord desires our company and we are assured He does, surely He will protect the medium that enables it. He will never allow our lifeline to Him to be severed. Just as a climber inspects his or her ropes inch-by-inch searching for any weakness in the line, Jesus maintains the faith that holds us to Him. 9/5/2009 Conversations Within ts

“He who would travel happily must travel light.” Antoine de Saint-Exupery
“To those who reside as aliens…” 1Pt.1.1 NASB
Father Abraham is said to have “made his home…like a stranger in a foreign country. All who profess faith in God are encouraged to adopt a similar approach to living. This is some of what Jesus meant when He said that we live in the world but are not of it. Brenda and I currently live in our homemade camper doing circuit ministry throughout the Southeast. We know what it means to set up home as we travel from campsite to campsite. Everything we set up must be taken down in a few weeks, so we are learning to travel light. And, while I am not advocating that all Christians take up the RV lifestyle, all of us are encouraged to find the balance of residing yet never fully residing in this place. 9/2/2009 Conversations Within ts

“But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings”
And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. James 5.15 ESV
These words seem simple enough. Do we believe and embrace them as a straightforward word of assurance? Why not! If their is any healing to be had it will come from His gracious hand. Ask, and we will know soon enough if this is one of those times that His favorable response will result in our healing. But let us be assured of this one thing, in Christ, the response is always favorable. 9/2/2009 Conversations Within ts

“He that can have patience, can have what he will” Benjamin Franklin
“You too, be patient…” James 5.8 NIV
I think some of us are waiting for God to teach us patience when all the while God simply waits on us to practice it. It only makes sense that if we are told to be patient, that doing so is a matter choice. Can we not choose to wait without complaint or stick with the tasks assigned to us until they finished, or endure whatever God asks from us knowing He will not put more on us than we can handle, at least handle with His help. Like all virtues, patience involves choice, even if the required choice is to wait. 9/2/2009 Conversations Within ts

It is preoccupation with possessions, more than anything else, that prevents us from living freely and nobly. --Thoreau
“You have hoarded wealth in the last days.” James 5.3 NIV
One value that Christ brings to the lives of those who follow Him is the light of living expediently. What I mean is that His Spirit teaches us how to make practical decisions and appropriate choices specifically in the management of our resources. He explains that it is not expedient to hoard money in this place or in this time and for a number of reasons. One is nearness of our coming evaluation; another is simply that what is entrusted to us here is to be used principally to invest there. Hoarding here is just a bad business decision. Doing so would be like buying stock in a company today, when you know full well it is going out of business tomorrow. 9/1/2009 Conversations Within ts

The rote prayer only lacks sincerity when we have mentally “checked out” while repeating it.
Instead, you ought to say, "If it is the Lord's will, we will live and do this or that." James 4.15 NIV
These words will serve us better as an attitude than if we just tack them on to the end of a sentence about the plans we are making tomorrow. I would also think that prayers concluded by saying, “In Jesus name,” are not always offered in the true spirit of His name. Just saying one of these postscripts does not mean that we use then properly, especially if we say them superstitiously, believing that God will resist our plans or refuse to answer our prayer if we don’t say them. 8/31/2009 Conversations Within ts
