"God is great!" Ps.70
A recent toothache pushed me to review some of my feelings toward God. I remember pacing back and forth in the middle of the night telling Him that while I knew pain to be a good thing, the level of pain I was experiencing was absolutely unnecessary. I angrily asked what would prompt Him to create such a terrible thing. After my bruised tooth settled down, my bruised soul realized that there were levels of pain that could shake my faith in God's wisdom and goodness. The little test, if I could call it such, has not only persuaded me that I do believe in His goodness and wisdom but that I also believe that His grace alone can sustain my faith in moments of doubt. How wise is our God to make pain as well as pleasure. Help me when I doubt this Lord. 10/24/11 Conversations Within ts (Holy Ground, AL)
Grace modeste- an "unassuming grace." Any discussion of a spiritual nature should reflect this mutual kindness. The following are simply my devotional reflections each morning. I cast them like "bread upon the waters," hoping that all who find them will find something of value to nurture their own inner life.

"When humans should have become as perfect in voluntary obedience as the inanimate creation is in its lifeless obedience,..
...then they will put on its glory, or rather that greater glory of which Nature is only the first sketch." C. S. Lewis
"I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out." Jesus
Every non-living thing obeys God. A rock always does what a rock is supposed to do. Water always seek the lowest point because God commands it to do so. The sun, moon and stars travel the course that is set for them. The laws of nature never fudge in their obedience. The same cannot be said for living creatures. It seems that when man rebelled, all nature, at least all living things went renegade. Murder, cancer, malaria are all rogue behavior. God is still Lord over all of this. But at least for the present it is His will that living things be able to resist His will. Let me obey God like water obeys Him but as a living creature freely choosing obedience and His Kingdom will come, if only in my heart. 10/22/11 Conversations Within ts (Montgomery, AL)

“One can believe intellectually in the efficacy of prayer and never do any praying.” Catherine Marshall
“Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.” Jesus
Knowledge is useful only if it serves doing. It is doing that defines whether we experience life as God intends. Doing, not knowing, is always the means to, and the final measure of, every benefit. To believe in the value of prayer or reflecting on God's word, but practicing neither, is like sitting at a table of delicious food looking but not eating. Knowing without doing is to die of thirst holding the water of life in your hand. 10/21/11 Conversations Within ts (Montgomery, AL)

The freedom to disobey is not the problem, disobeying is.
“Sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned--” Rom.5
That a perfect God would give us the power to choose is reason enough to believe that our freedom to do so is necessary to know and love Him. The freedom to choose has never been our problem. Everything wrong with the world is the abuse of that freedom just as everything right with the world is the proper use of it. True submission to God is always voluntary and motivated by love. Forced compliance would never work in Heaven. There will be no police in Glory. 10/20/11 Conversations Within ts (Camp Carols, AL)

Doing is everything! Nothing happens till you flip the switch, take the step, practice what you know, and where God is concerned, do what you are told
“And he did not do what was right in the eyes of the LORD...” 2Ch.28
It is silly to blame a diet for not working if we do not do what it tells us to do. The same may be said for our faith. People tell me all the time that they tried trusting God and it did not work. I know that when I feel this way it is usually because I am using the word trust to mean something other than obey. I have always found trusting God to work when trust moves me to do something and I do it. 10/19/11 Conversations Within ts (Camp Farrington, AL)

Obedience is the joy not the burden that Jesus would teach us.
Obedience is the joy not the burden that Jesus would teach us.
“You will abide in my love if you keep my commandments. I tell you these things so that my joy may be in you and your joy made full.” Jesus
It is often my struggle to comply that teaches me the absolute wisdom that I do so. If I find obedience to God's will a burden this only persuades me that obedience is my best course of action. Think about it. Most of the things that are good for us are things that we find a burden to do—at least at first. Eating right, exercise, moderation, saying no to certain fleshly appetites are all points of struggle within us simply because we know we should be doing them and aren't. It is when we finally cross over and do them that we will discover the joy of obedience. Finding joy in obedience is learning to dance to rhythm of righteousness. 10/18/11 Conversations Within ts (Camp Farrington, AL)

Nobody likes to be told what to do; wisdom is the only cure for this.
“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.” Pro.1
Most adults understand the value of instruction for children. Wisdom teaches us to never forget its value to us. Maturity is not outgrowing our need to obey good instruction but learning to value it as the means to wisdom and joyful living. Children often obey because of the fear of punishment if they do not. This will only work for a while. This fear is properly replaced by respect for authority and eventually a love for wisdom. God is the personification of wisdom so learning to fear Him, respect Him, love Him is all it means to mature and be wise. If wisdom is to teach us anything it must first teach us to love instruction. 10/17/11 Conversations Within ts (Backroads, AL)

“Modesty is my best quality” Jack Benny
“...we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.” Rom.5
I think it is best to work toward being modest than to just have modest moments. Of course this could be said for any number of virtues. My present life is a series of dots which I trust God will connect into one continuous line. Things like modesty, humility, kindness are desirable as character qualities not just sporadic acts strung along life's path. But certainly when we choose a moment of modesty or kindness and do it over and over again, such perseverance becomes habit and habits have a way of becoming character. There is no magic formula that will turn us overnight into the person we want to be. We cannot expect the harvest of a godly character without planting and cultivating of godly actions. 10/14/11 Conversations Within ts (Pisgah National Forest, NC)

“I have often wished I had time to cultivate modesty... but I am too busy thinking about myself.” Edith Sitwell
“Let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart...” 1Pet.3 ESV
I am not a modest person but there is a modest person living inside me. I like an audience; He enjoys not letting His left hand know what His right hand is doing. I talk too much--especially about myself; He is quiet and focuses on encouraging others. I am an open book revealing too much; He is understated beauty . I wear too much cologne, He is that delicate scent, that hint of aroma that invites. I am shamelessly naked and He is clothed with compassion and grace. “Naked come to thee for dress, Helpless look to thee for grace, foul I to the fountain fly, wash me Savior or I die.” 10/13/11 Conversations Within ts (Pisgah National Forest, NC)

“It is far more impressive when others discover your good qualities without your help” Miss Manners
“Let another praise you and not your own lips.” Pro.27
Love does not boast or call attention to itself, neither does a modest person. I think the essential quality of true modesty is to have a proper perspective about oneself, especially in relation to God and to others. Simply put, we are put here to love, to be an overflowing spring not a holding tank. A modest person is never “Here I am,” but “There you are.” A modest person is too busy considering others than to waste energy drawing attention to themselves. ”He who speaks without modesty will find it difficult to make his words good.” Confucius
"Does not the ear test words as the palate tastes food?” Job.12
There can be modesty in speech just as there can be modesty in the way we dress. We generally think of modesty as not revealing too much flesh but certainly no one should reveal everything they are thinking as well. I am guilty on both accounts. People who know me know I don't like clothing. I am always running around without a shirt. Its a comfort thing. I am also guilty of blurting out whatever I am thinking at the moment. As I sit in the light of wisdom, I realize that I am not thinking about others when doing either. It's a rude thing. 10/11/11 Conversations Within ts (Pisgah National Forest, NC)

“At least I have the modesty to admit that lack of modesty is one of my failings.” Hector Berlioz
Like a gold ring in a pig's snout is a beautiful woman without discretion. Pro.11 ESV
It is fascinating that we can take pride in knowing that we have a problem with pride. It is certainly a good thing to know one's undesirable traits but only when this knowledge lead us to do something about them. To admit what you are doing is wrong but then refuse to stop doing it is like seeing your neighbor's house catch on fire but not calling the fire department. Modesty is the result of not only knowing your faults but dealing with them. Modesty is a restraining influence. It moves us to be humble about our strengths and repentant about our shortcomings. Modesty is the twin sister of humility. 10/10/11 Conversations Within ts (Pisgah National Forest, NC)

“The less you reveal the more people can wonder.” Emma Watson
“Let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious.” 1.Pet.3
Modesty is about so much more than dress but it is certainly reflected in it. Modesty is the ambiance of the whole person. Its presence can be the hint of a pleasant aroma; its absence, an overpowering odor. Modesty conceals yet subtly reveals. It causes those who pass by to pause and wonder if there is more here than meets the eye. Like a well done cover of an old book, it invites people to explore and discover the hidden treasures of one's inner life. Modesty is never flashy but none-the-less inviting--in a good sort of way. 10/9/11 Conversations Within ts (Brevard, NC)

“To be able to ask a question clearly is two-thirds of the way to getting it answered.” John Ruskin
“Your word is a lamp to my feet, a light to my path.” Ps.119
It has taken me a long time but I am learning the value of a properly placed question. I am not talking about asking someone a question so you can give them the answer. It is true that a good question will often help others think through their answer and in that sense asking something is intended to help them. But, learning to ask the right questions and listening to the experiences of others can make all the difference in the world when it comes to “living and learning” or “learning then living”—the latter of course being preferred. 10/8/11 Conversations Within ts (Durham, NC)

“Two monologues do not make a dialogue.” ~Jeff Daly
“Count others more significant than yourselves.” Phil.2 ESV
I read once where a lady had dinner with two celebrities on two separate occasions. Later when she was asked what it was like, she replied that when she had dinner with the first, he impressed her so much that she felt she was in the presence of a very important person. But, when asked about the second, her response was different, she replied, “He made me feel that I was very important.” Do I impress people with my own importance or do I make them feel important? Do I spend my time prattling on about myself or do I express genuine interest in what other people say? Lord I am full of myself, set me free! 10/7/11 Conversations Within ts (Durham, NC)

“Communication is depositing a part of yourself in another person.”
"But the things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart...” Jesus
Every interaction we have with others communicates something, but the message received isn't always the message we want to send. Inattention says I don't value your opinion enough. Talking too much says I place too much value on my own opinions. None of us want to say these things because we know that only self-centered people act this way. The problem is that we can not help doing it because some of the time we are what we despise--a selfish person. Selfishness is the disease of the human race. The cure is a change of heart and Christ specializes in giving people one, if they will let Him. 10/6/11 Conversations Within ts (Durham, NC)

“When all other means of communication fail, try words” Anonymous
“Be quick to listen and slow to speak.” Jam.1
Everybody knows there is so much more to communication than just words even if we forget it sometimes. Facial expressions like frowning or smiling can speak volumes. Now, if I want to communicate love to someone, there is nothing wrong with saying “I love you,” but showing them by my actions may say it better. A concerted effort to understand another's point of view by really listening to them, will communicate you care about them more than telling them you care. The ear sometimes is a better tool to communicate with than the mouth. 10/5/11 Conversations Within ts (Durham, NC)

“A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” Pro.15 ESV
After learning the hard way, Brenda and I have made it a personal rule to never argue when angry. We have also resolved to never leave a matter unresolved. Of course this only works if you agree to it before any argument begins. But after establishing this as your standard operating procedure, it will remind you that when an argument starts to “table” the matter, until tempers have cooled. Coming back to the table later will keep differences from from becoming arguments again and again. Learn to stop talking when angry but never stop talking through issues important to you. 10/4/11 Conversations Within ts (Durham, NC)

“The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.” George Bernard Shaw
‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.’ Jesus
If I am not careful, I may not hold up my end of a conversation by listening to others when they are talking. I often find myself thinking about what I want to say next while they are speaking. Good communication not only involves listening and talking but the concerted effort to make sure we have heard the other person correctly and also, that they heard us correctly. The only way I know to do this is to repeat to others what I have heard them say and ask them what they have heard me say. It would be a mistake to assume on either side when we can simply clarify by saying, “This is what I heard you say,” and asking, “what did you hear me say.” Now, what did you hear me say? 10/3/11 Conversations Within ts (Watson Mill, GA)

“We should give as we would receive, cheerfully, quickly, and without hesitation;..
... for there is no grace in a benefit that sticks to the fingers.” Seneca
“God loves a cheerful giver.” 2Cor.9.7
I don’t want to give out of a sense of guilt. I would prefer instead the overflowing spring of Your generous presence, joyfully giving, even hilariously giving through me. I know You don’t want my money or my time, just my heart. When You have my heart You will have my all. So Lord let me address the needs of the world by giving You my heart and as I give You mine give me Yours in return. 10/1/11 Conversations Within ts (Watson Mill, GA)

“The manner of giving is worth more than the gift.” Pierre Corneille, Le Menteur
“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Rom.6 ESV
Most gifts which require sacrifice are of great value. But a gift that requires the ultimate sacrifice is of greatest value. A person may live on less money in order to give more money. But this hardly compares to the gift of a soldier who literally lives less so that others may live more. I wear a cross to remind me of the ultimate sacrifice and therefore the ultimate gift. The “death of death in the death of Christ” and consequently, the gift of eternal life secured by it, are accomplished in that one supreme sacrifice. The execution of an innocent man to expiate the wrongs of a guilty world was willfully given by both Father and Son. All that is left is for us to accept their gift. 9/30/11 Conversations Within ts (Watson Mill, GA)

“Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it.” William A. Ward
“Like clouds and wind without rain is a man who boasts of a gift he does not give.” Pro.25 ESV
There is more than one way to express gratitude, and while it is always appropriate to say, “Thank you,” it may be more expedient to show our appreciation. When I express gratitude, I want it to be with my actions not just my words. I know what communicates love to me, I suppose one question that needs answering is do I know what communicates love to God or to the people in my life. I mean do I really want to show my wife how much I appreciate what she does for me by getting her a surfboard if she doesn't surf? I am sure some of the ways I express my appreciation to God are just as self-centered. Do I really know what would tell God how grateful I am for His many blessings? 9/29/11 Conversations Within ts (Watson Mill, GA)

“You can give without loving, but you can never love without giving.” Author Unknown
“If I give away all I have... but have not love, I gain nothing.” 1Co.13 ESV
Giving is the hand of love in motion. But sadly, not all giving is motivated by love. I may give just like I may flatter and both are empty--clouds without rain. Sometimes we give gifts with strings attached or perhaps to strike a bargain--a sort of “I'll do this if you do that.” Sometimes we give for the admiration of others. This is why Jesus told us that sometimes it is best to give in secret. It is hard to give a secret gift with bad motives. God does not mind that we give to receive just when we give “only” to receive. Love insures that we don't. 9/28/11 Conversations Within ts (Watson Mill, GA)

God does not mind that we give to receive just when we give “only” to receive. Love insures that we don't. 9/28/11 Conversations Within ts (Watson Mill, GA)
“God waits to win back his own flowers as gifts from man's hands.” Rabindranath Tagore
“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights...” Jas.1 ESV
We give nothing that is not first given to us. Even the breath we use to give thanks to God is first borrowed from Him. What is amazing and what should motivate us to greater giving is that God regards every gift of love we give to others as a gift given to Him. Remember Jesus' words, “If you do it to the least of these you do it to me.” Our attitude toward every material possession or toward our talents or our time should be like a bowl of mashed potatoes at dinner. No one, except a selfish man hoards what is passed to them. Pass the bowl! 9/27/11 Conversations Within ts (Watson Mill, GA)

“It is when you give of yourself that you truly give.” Kahlil Gibran
“It is when you give of yourself that you truly give.” Kahlil Gibran
“For which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred?” Jesus
When a gift comes to us as the fragrance of love it is unmatched. A mother would not trade a lavish dinner out on the town for a cold breakfast prepared by her children on Mother's Day morn. Those scrambled eggs with bits of egg shell served along side scraped burnt toast is worth more than a fifty dollar plate served at a favorite restaurant because the fifty dollar plate does not carry the aroma of her children's hands. 9/26/11 Conversations Within ts (Watson Mill, GA)

“Excellence is doing ordinary things extraordinarily well.” John W. Gardner
“...if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” Php.4 ESV
I do not think it wise to confuse excellence with being a perfectionist. A perfectionist attitude can not only ruin your day but everybody else's day around you. Trying to get something perfect is not the same as trying to do it well. There are many things that do the job well that do not have to be perfect. A stick will stir a pot as well as any golden spoon. Trying to get it perfect will inevitably bring disappointment. Many Thanksgiving meals have been ruined by perfectionists as have weddings and birthdays and anything where the pursuit of excellence is confused with getting it perfect. 9/24/11 Conversations Within ts (Camp Farrington, AL)
