“Respect your efforts, respect yourself.

Self-respect leads to self-discipline. When you have both firmly under your belt, that's real power.” Clint Eastwood

“Love your neighbor as yourself.” Jesus

The words of Jesus to love our neighbor surely encourage us to love ourselves as well. If we do not have a proper self respect we have no proper way to measure giving respect to others. It is then important to love yourself if we are to love others. The highest form of self-respect is when we aggressively seek what is good for both the body and soul. This will naturally overflow to those we love. Most of the time when we fail to show respect to someone it is a symptom that we have little or no respect for ourselves. “When I was younger I could remember anything, whether it happened or not.” Mark Twain

Guard your heart for from it flows the wellsprings of life. Prov. 4

People have a way of remembering which is more to their liking than it is to the way things actually occur. This is because we are always filtering life through the lens of our perspective and our perspective can be determined as much by our attitude as by our actual circumstances. This is why our heart attitude is so important. A bad attitude will often yield a bad memory just as a good attitude can determine if we take something good from an experience. Our perceptions of reality often become our reality. Conversations Within ts 4/21/2012 (Camp Carol's, AL)

“Memory... is the diary that we all carry about with us.” Oscar Wilde

“Remember the wonders he has done.” Psalms 105

If I have no recent memories of interactions with God, I may need to consider the health of my relationship with Him. My life yesterday is a diary of my faith. I want my diary to be full of stories about the wonders of God living in me, walking with me. The best illustrations of what it means to trust God should come from my own walk with Him, not from the pages of other people. This is not to say that we cannot benefit from hearing about what God is doing in others, but I certainly want my own story to be an overflowing cup of goodness. “We do not remember days; we remember moments.” Cesare Pavese

“...the Holy Spirit...will remind you of everything I have said to you.” Jesus

I am one to ask questions, especially to God. Who better to ask if you do not know something. He always answers, though not always as I would choose nor what I would choose. I am learning to distinguish His voice speaking to me from my own inner thoughts. One way God speaks to me is by helping me remember things I have read in the Scriptures. Sometimes He answers a question immediately by quoting them to me. Other times He answers by sort of putting my thoughts about them together. He speaks to me through other people and through experiences. But truly most communication somehow comes back to what He has already said in the Bible. I suppose this is why we are told to read the Scriptures. You can't very well be reminded of something you haven't heard before. Conversations Within ts 4/17/2012 (Selma, AL)

“To look backward for a while is to refresh the eye, to restore it, and to render it the more fit for its prime function of looking forward.” Margaret

“On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night.” Ps.63

It may seem strange but sometimes when we remember we do not visit something in the past but wake to something in the present. If you have ever gotten lost in thought and suddenly “remembered” that someone was in the same room with you, you know my meaning. I experience this all of the time with my wife; I also experience this with God. I get lost in thought talking with Him then suddenly realize I forgot I was in the middle of a conversation. I apologize for this all of the time. Remembering can not only help us look back it can bring us forward to the present. Remembering is one way to keeping yourself awake. We are told to remember some things not because they might be forgotten but because they should not be neglected.

We are told to remember some things not because they might be forgotten but because they should not be neglected.

“Do this in remembrance of me.” Jesus

I am certain Jesus did not tell His disciples to observe Communion because He was concerned we would forget His sacrifice but because we need the life that is nurtured in us by this continuing interaction with Him. By telling us to remember Him Christ is more like the mother reminding her children to eat their vegetables than a politician wanting to be remembered on election day. "Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things." Robert Brault

"For who has despised the day of small things? Zech. 4 NASB

Everyone can look back and see the value of tiny decisions. We either come to love or hate the small choices we have made. A decision to turn right when we should have turned left or that decision when we turned left and praise God did not turn right. So much can be gained or lost by a tiny decision. Who has not relived a single moment, the one that forever changed something or left something forever unchanged. Life is surely in the details. I think God gives grace to us in these critical moments. If there is one thing needed it would be to recognize and embrace the grace offered us in the day of small things. “The obvious is that which is never seen until someone expresses it simply.” Kahlil Gibran

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart...Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.” Jesus

It would be hard to improve on rising each day to love and be loved. What better way to spend your life. Life is so much more than avoiding what is wrong; it is living on the positive side of loving. Jesus teaches us that love is more than feelings. When He tells us to love, He is not saying that we should have fond feelings toward the one we seek to love but to act in such a way that does them good. All in all, His summary for living is a pretty simple formula for meaning and happiness. Conversations Within ts 4/12/2012 (Jax)

“Ever has it been that love knows not its own depth until the hour of separation.” Kahlil Gibran

“And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.” Jesus

If there is ever a word to describe the harsh realities of this life it is the word “separation.” We are separated from loved ones at death, separated from our own bodies when death comes to us. We are separated from each other, even from ourselves and all because we are separated from the life of God. Sin separates. But these separations are necessary for many reasons—many good reasons. Who would want to live forever in this fragmented world? It is good that we don't. It is good to feel the heartache of these separations if only because they tell us that the world is broken and needs mending. This is the story of Jesus. If there is ever a word to describe his work in the world it is the word “peace.” The peace of Jesus is the bringing together of all that is broken, the mending of what is torn. His second coming is the richest meaning of the word homecoming when there will be no more separations. Conversations Within ts 4/12/2012 (Jax)

“And all the beasts of the field play there. ” Job 40

Surely if God takes pleasure in the play of animals in the field He delights in our own enjoyment of it. God made us for life outdoors. Play outside everyday. Walk barefoot in the grass, wade in a stream, skip rocks in a pond or climb a tree. Do not forget that life is more than work, that God commands rest and refreshment. Be refreshed then and experience the renewal of time outside. Rise to watch the sunrise, take time to see it set. Lie on your back and connect the stars or watch leaves come in for a landing. “Faith is a knowledge within the heart, beyond the reach of proof.” Kahlil Gibran

“He was...fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.“ Romans 4

I believe my faith in Christ is reasonable. What I am saying is that I have good reasons for believing what I believe. But there are issues that I face each day where God requires me to trust Him even when I do not understand what He is asking me to do. One that I face regularly is in my prayers for people. It does not seem reasonable to ask God to do something that I think He is already doing—what any good parent would be doing. But, He does. I think every issue which demands faith “beyond the reach of proof” rests in the simple words of Abraham, “Will not the Judge of the earth do what is right.” Conversations Within ts 4/10/2012 (Jax)

"Your daily life is your temple and your religion. When you enter into it take with you your all.” Kahlil Gibran

“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own.” 1 Cor.6 NIV

There are a lot of things I think about saying or doing that I never do. There is a restraining influence in me. I am not talking about my conscience or the inner motivations we all have to avoid unpleasant consequences if we were to act out our every thought. My faith tells me it is the restraining hand of God on my shoulder reminding me that there is no profit to what I want to say or to a particular line of thinking running around in my head. This Presence in me does not always convict, He also comforts. I feel His pleasure when I am surfing, or walking in the woods or when I take His suggestion to serve someone. I think waking to His presence in us is the purest expression of a real religion. As one writer put it, “Life is a Church.” Conversations Within ts 4/9/2012 (Jax)

”We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” Winston Churchill

“Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered.” Pro11

I know people who are not very religious in the “religious” sense of the word but they are very religious when it comes to giving. What I mean is that they devoutly practice sharing what God has entrusted to them. Giving is the way they do life. When the energy of our life flows out toward others, we will find the energy of His life flowing in us and through us. Truly the latter produces the former. “Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.” Hebrews 13

One story that has stuck with me through the years involves a man standing beside a river looking for a way to cross. Several men, George Washington among them, rode up on horses. The man politely asked Washington for a ride across the river and was given one. When they got to the other side, someone in the party asked the man why he had asked “that man” instead of any of the others for the ride. The man replied that Washington had a “Yes” face. Those who call themselves Christian certainly represent Jesus to the rest of the world and do so as a good or bad ambassador. Lord, I would be a good one but I know at times I choose poorly and therefore represent you poorly. I have prayed that when people spend time with me that they would come away having spent time with You. I fear that I am a dirty cup and You the elixir of life. Who would want to drink of Your goodness in such a nasty container. Wash me Lord, inside and out. Conversations Within ts 4/5/2012 (On the Road)

“Being good is commendable, but only when it is combined with doing good is it useful”. ~Author Unknown

“Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all...” Galatians 6

When we are encouraged to to good to others one reason that is given, and without apology, is that we also serve ourselves. It not only benefits our neighbor, we do ourselves a good turn. Good is good no matter how it is served. God has tied our own goodness to the goodness of others. We cannot help but improve our own lives when we look to the interest of our neighbor. Nor does God mind this, in fact He is pleased when we seek goodness for ourselves. I think what bothers Him most is that we settle for things of less value instead of the supreme value that can be found only in the kind of life He prescribes. “You are the salt of the earth...the light of the world.” Jesus

I have faith in Jesus for many reasons. One is that I think that His way of living is a sure road to lasting happiness. It is hard to improve on rising each day to love and be loved. I am always happy when the energy of my life is flowing out toward others. I am never happy when I am centered on myself. Following Christ has nothing to do with being good to bribe your way into heaven. His disciples seek to be good in the sense of usefulness to God and to others--to live a beneficial not boastful existence; to give rather than to take. Conversations Within ts 4/3/2012 (On the Road)

“Weep with those who weep.” Romans 12

I can think of only a few accusations to hold back one's tears; temper tantrum tears or the tears of a spoiled child or “crying over spilled milk.” Most of the time it is not necessary for people to apologize or be embarrassed for this precious release of the soul. Tears spill because the cup of tender affections is running over. I think this is why we are told to weep with those who weep instead of telling people not to cry. Let proper tears flow and certainly those that share the hurts of a friend, even if the hurt is God's. Conversations Within ts 3/31/2012 (On the Road)

“Tears are the noble language of eyes...” Robert Herrick

“Jesus wept.” John 11

My favorite movies or books are the ones that move me from tears to laughter and back again. My tears are as important to me as laughter, probably more so. With them I open my soul to God, I share the grief of those I love and behold with wonder as the Holy Spirit fine tunes my heart to the concerns of Jesus. One of the richest experiences in my life came to me one night in college when I was walking in a garden. I began to weep uncontrollably in pure worship and adoration over God 's love expressed to me in Christ and continued to weep until the sun rose through my window the next morning. I was baptized in my own tears. How precious to me the pure delight of that experience. You can ditto that, Lord, anytime! Conversations Within ts 3/29/2012 (On the Road)

"Turn! Turn! Turn! (to Everything There Is a Season)" The Byrds

“To every thing there is a season...A time to weep!” Ecclesiastes

There is a time to weep and properly so. Certainly we should embrace it as one ingredient in the mess we have made of things. Should we not grieve over injustice, hunger, and suffering? Shouldn't we grieve over our part in these things? Let my soul mourn its selfishness if only because of my apathy toward the suffering of others. Let me grieve over a hypocritical and impotent concern which acknowledges how sad the plight of my neighbor but refuses to do anything about it. Conversations Within ts 3/28/2012 (Windsor Rock, AL)

“Like a bridge over troubled waters I will lay me down.” Simon And Garfunkel

“Like a bridge over troubled waters I will lay me down.” Simon And Garfunkel

"Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.” Jesus

I know God loves me if for no other reason than the love given me by my friends. I have realized that Jesus is at the heart of every act of kindness, especially those that require sacrifice. I think that the greatest grace shared with me, is that because these people are so willing to deny themselves to come to my aid I am surely encouraged to taste the joy I see in them when personal sacrifice is asked of me. Grace from them is working the same grace in me. Just as all the waters of the world return to the ocean which give them every act of love finds its fountainhead in God. God is love! “Sad songs say so much...” Elton John

“Blessed are those who mourn.” Jesus

The night of sadness is appointed to us in this world just as surely as are days of joy. For every happy song, there is sad one waiting to be sung. Are not sorrow and joy partners in the dance of life even as pain and pleasure share the same race? We may even paraphrase the words of Jesus to say, “Happy are the unhappy, for they shall be comforted.” Do not shy away from the value of tender tears; God uses them to water the garden of godliness.
