We must often remind ourselves of truths we believe because the fog of our feelings can roll in and cause us to forget them. It is good to remind yourself of why you started believing something in the first place. But once you have established good reasons for believing something, believe it--not just with your mind but follow it up with your actions. The best way to honor soldiers who fought for our freedom is not by erecting monuments to them, but by using our freedom for something worth the sacrifices they made. Remember them by responsible citizenship. The same can be said for Christ. We honor him by living in the freedoms He also secured. The way we remember can be just as important as what we remember. Rote memory may be fine when it comes to the multiplication tables but it won’t do for things like marriage vows or Communion. When Jesus told us to remember Him, He probably had in mind that we keep our vital connection with Him not that we go through the motions of some ritual. But worship rituals can serve our connection just as courtship rituals can keep a romance in a marriage.
