The way we remember can be just as important as what we remember. Rote memory may be fine when it comes to the multiplication tables but it won’t do for things like marriage vows or Communion. When Jesus told us to remember Him, He probably had in mind that we keep our vital connection with Him not that we go through the motions of some ritual. But worship rituals can serve our connection just as courtship rituals can keep a romance in a marriage. Imagine having to learn how to tie your shoes every morning and you come to appreciate the value of memory. The funny thing about memory is that we remember what we remember. If we use our memory we won’t lose our memory. Use becomes a means of active engagement, and this is never more true than in matters of faith. When people come and ask for advice, I like to ask them what they would tell a good friend or a child looked to them with the same question. Most of the time, they already know what to do. We often have the answer to our questions because God has already spoken to us about them.
