We can listen with our eyes, and our heart as much as with our ears. When we listen to someone, we should try to see the world through their eyes. We can listen so well that we not only know what someone has said, but we can feel the emotion in their words. Listen to see what they see, and to feel what they feel. God showed us that He was serious about listening to us when Christ put on a pair of our sandals and lived in them.

If I am to improve my listening skills I can start not only by keeping my mouth closed, but also by directing my thoughts to what is being said not what I want to say in return. Sweet humility inclines us to be learners before we become teachers. Someone has said, “The biggest communication problem is we do not listen to understand. We listen to reply.”

Am I prepared to listen to others? Do I have a listening ear and empathetic heart? One way we express genuine love to people is by listening to them, really listening. Someone has said that God gave us two ears and one mouth so that we would listen twice as much as we speak. Learn to listen and listen to learn. One thing is for certain, we cannot listen with our ears if our mouth is running. When we see someone approaching, we should prepare ourselves to listen not talk.
