It is one thing to try and please God in some attempt to merit his blessings and favor, and an entirely differ matter to try and please Him because of one’s gratitude and love. Don’t get me wrong; to have God’s favor is everything, but we can seek to please Him not to earn it, but because we recognize that we already have it. We love Him because He first loved us.
