Do you have too much on your schedule? Is your calendar always full? Are you overrun with everything that needs to be done? Don’t get this wrong. There is nothing unhealthy about a full day, just a day without time for relationships, for reflection, even rest. A full day should include down time. Setting aside time to do nothing might be the most important something we can do for our health.

One day I sat worried about something. It was a scorching hot summer day, and there in front of me was a family of young sparrows drinking from a water spigot. Someone evidently had not turned it off tight enough and one tiny drop after another was falling into the upturned beaks of these hot and thirsty birds. As plain as any voice I have ever heard, the Spirit gently reminded me of what Jesus said about birds.

Follow your heart, but only if your heart is leading you in the right direction.

When we take pleasure in God’s pleasure He will gladly grant us our own. If we can sincerely ask something from God that we know He would be pleased to give, why would we not confidently expect Him to do so. Of course, we can safely say that He will not support any desire that we have that would not please Him. He is not a parent that spoils His children but one who supports them.

How powerful are our thoughts. Like fire, they can be warmly beneficial or wildly destructive. If we keep our thoughts in check they provide light and warmth to our home. But let loose and unconstrained, they can burn our house to the ground. Tend the fire of your thought life and enjoy its warmth.

Every story has a dragon in it, one that needs to be slain.

There is always something to conquered--be it adversity, hardship, evil, or even our own selfish tendencies. It is good for us to remember that we are at the center of all this corruption. God did not make the world this way. We did. The first dragon that needs to be slain is our own self-centered pride. We can join the fight against evil by putting to death our own.

Contentment is an acquired taste which is why Jesus suggested that we pray “not my will, but yours be done.”

We must often reconcile ourselves to what pleases God, instead of what would please us. There are times when I would want nothing better than to tell someone off until the Spirit reminds me that it would actually be better, if I kept my mouth shut. There is a learning curve to contentment. We first learn to be dissatisfied with our wants until we come to that place where we are satisfied with His.

I relate! This is “my kind of happy.” Eternal joy certainly awaits all who hope in God, but the joy God invites us to is now, and it would be a great loss to miss it. Wake my soul to this moment and embrace the life that He offers. Lie down in the peaceful pastures of your shepherd, rest content, and be satisfied beside His still waters. Cop a squat and give yourself fully to this moment.

I do not believe that God tells us to do things that we are unable to do. When Jesus tells us to be “content” He is saying that it is within our power to be so. In short, He is encouraging us to be satisfied with what Father has put on our plate this day and to be grateful for it. We have within us the power to change our focus from things we may want to what we have.

Plow a straight line unless a crooked one would be better. Be relevant to each situation if you want balance.

Balance is knowing when to do what--when to speak and when not to speak is a good example. How do we know when to do what? This is exactly the kind of thing that God uses to help keep us focused on walking with Him in the present moment. Don’t cross the bridge before you get to it. Trust God in this moment’ no doubt He will be there for us in the next.

Perspective is good for stress management. Do what “needs” to be done, and remind yourself that even though you may prefer being somewhere else doing something else, what you are doing “has” to be done, because it “needs” to be done. Chill! If your too busy to go for a walk, you’re too busy. Driven people usually wind up burning out by what’s driving them. Learn to relax, reevaluate and take some time to center yourself. Burned out people are no good to themselves or others. Exhaustion is a good sign of burnout, especially when we have grown bored with our work.

And even though these are natural, if left unchecked, and uncontrolled, natural desires can become unhealthy and cause us a great deal of hurt and heartache. It is not always wise to follow your instincts. A mature love seeks what is good, and faithfulness keeps us from settling for less. Live under the influences of love, not the instincts of lust and desire.
