“You need to steer your thoughts in the same direction you want to steer your life.” Unknown

We become what we think about, at least what we think about a lot. Hopefully we learn to listen to our own thoughts. Who wants to be a negative and critical person, but we surely will be if most of our thinking is turned loose in that direction every day. Write down the kind of person you want to be and steer your thoughts toward it.

“A fool gives full vent to his spirit, but a wise man quietly holds it back.” Prov.29 Conversations Within” ts 9/25/2016

By all means speak the truth to yourself.

Thoughts direct our words but there are times when reciting words can direct our thoughts. It is possible to be trapped in our own thought. Our imaginations, worries, doubts and fears rob us of the joy of life. At such times, reading God’s promises and reciting them to our heart can open the doors of our tiny cell and lead us out to play in the fields of the Lord. Read His promises, remember them, then recite them over and over again until they take root in the heart.

“Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long.” Ps.119 Conversations Within” ts 9/25/2016

“Words make you think a thought, Music makes you feel a feeling. A song makes you feel a thought.” E.Y. Harburg

The word “affettuoso” is a musical notion that directs the artist to play or sing the music with tender feelings. This is very close to the meaning of one Hebrew word for meditation. Our tender meditations, those that express our purest affections are the music of the soul and can be a pleasant sound to the Lord, depending on what inspires them. We become what we think about. Our words reveal our thoughts. May both be freely offered as a melody of worship and the delight of God.

“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.” Ps.19 Conversations Within” ts 9/24/2016

“Reach out and touch someone.” AT&T

We all know that our words can hurt, but it is just as important to know that words have the power to heal. Forgiving words, encouraging words, and wise words all have life in them. Purposefully choose words that spread goodness for there are many hurts in this world.  Tell someone today how proud you are of their accomplishments, or the positive difference they have made in your life. Make it a daily ambition to spread wonderful words of life.

“A gentle tongue is a tree of life…” Prov.15 Conversations Within” ts 9/23/2016

“Handle them carefully, for words have more power than atom bombs.” Pearl Strachan

There are many warnings written about the abuses of the tongue, as well as there should be. But our words can also work great good. How powerful is a well placed “Thank you!” It works a wonderful grace both to the giver and receiver. Be careful with words as with a knife. Use them to heal rather than hurt, to complement rather than criticize.

“There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.” Prov.12 Conversations Within” ts 9/22/2016

"The secret of being boring is to say everything." Voltaire

There is wisdom knowing when to speak and when not to speak. Just because we have an opinion does not mean that we should always share it. It is better if people seek out our counsel instead of rolling their eyes because we are always giving it. Are my words a rare find, like pearls of wisdom, or do I carelessly and loudly fling them everywhere like Mardi Gras beads?

Holiness is doing God’s will with a smile.” Mother Teresa

There are times when I want God’s blessing but not necessarily His will. Most of the time, most of the problem with knowing God’s will is sincerely wanting it. Once our heart is truly ready to do His will, whatever it may be, we are on the brink of not only discovering it, but finding its delight.

“The best way to handle life, is to put your life in God's hands.” Anthony Liccione

When we put something in God’s hands we should leave it there. This is easier said than done. The only thing I know to do when we take up a concern after we have given it to God is to give it back again and keep doing so until we wholeheartedly leave it there. One practical way we can leave matters in God’s hands is to take up some matter that He puts into ours. In other words, trust Him with our concerns while we take up His.

“Cast all your care on Him because He cares for you.” 1Pet.5 Conversations Within” ts 9/16/2016

“For most of us the prayer in Gethsemane is the only model. Removing mountains can wait.” C. S. Lewis

Should we ask God to stand in our way if something we want to do is not His will for us? There are examples from Scripture that indicate that this is wise. When we consider that much of our thinking is not yet in line with His, such a prayer can convey both trust in His wisdom over our own, and a sincere desire to live our lives in the center of His will. The goal of all prayer is that we align our will with His.

”On the journey of life, it is OK to stop and ask directions.” Unknown

Let’s say that I want to sell my home and live on a boat. How would I determine if this is God’s will for me or not?  God gives great latitude to the choices we make. I think it is interesting that we tend to pray over big decisions, but reserve to ourselves the freedom to eat tuna over peanut butter without consulting Him.  I think the point is once we have committed our lives to Him, and sincerely want His will, and try to live by the encouragements of His word, He blesses our choices big and small.  He may tweak them of course, even oppose them if it is in our best interest to do so.

“Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” Prov.16 Conversations Within” ts 9/13/2016

"When you base your life on principle, 99% of your decisions are already made" Unknown

It is not a casual interest in Scripture, but a purposeful nurturing of the soul with them that brings the life of God to live in us. When God’s word dwells richly in us, His promises give confidence to our prayers, His wisdom gives direction to our decisions, His admonitions coach us in the arena of daily living. Read them. Hide them in your heart. Meditate on them every day and by all means flesh out the beauty of His presence in them by keeping them.

"The good life is a process, not a state of being. It is a direction not a destination." Carl Rogers

How can we know what direction God wants us to take in a particular matter? Do I buy this house, go to this college, join the Air Force or marry this person? In one very important sense, the overall direction of our life will significantly impact all the other decisions that follow. Making a decision to go West instead of East, will affect what places I will be able to visit along the way. Deciding that I want to honor God first with my life will both limit and expand my choices down the road. Before we can get God’s direction and blessing for a particular decision,  we need to make sure we are core committed to go in His overall direction.

“Don't think too much. You'll create a problem that wasn't even there in the first place.” Sukhraj S. Dhillon

I am not sure how one can stop thinking too much. I am sure that it is possible to think about one thing while doing another. Sometimes this serves us well, other times I believe it robs us of the joy of living wholeheartedly in the present moment. It would probably be better, not to try and think less, but simply think more about what we doing. Live wholeheartedly in the joys of present moment. Certainly we can think too much about the wrong things.

“And to aspire to live quietly, and to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands.” Conversations Within” ts 9/11/2016

“When you have control over your thoughts, you have control over your life.” Unknown

I should think that one effective way to purge negative and harmful thoughts is to fill your mind with good ones. Don’t resist thinking about something negative; redirect and think about something new. Resisting thoughts is holding on to them--still thinking about them. Redirecting our thoughts means that we let go of the old and lay hold of the new.

“A gem cannot be polished without friction, nor man perfected without trials.” Chinese Proverb

There are any number of things that can significantly disrupt our lives. Chest pains, the death of a loved one, an accident, or getting fired from your job are only a few. Hopefully we have a mature enough inner life to get through these life altering events without losing our grip on matters that truly matter. How do we nurture such a life? I suppose giving ourselves to matters that matter every day is one way to do it. It is often in the fires of crisis that God helps fine tune what is truly important.

“But he knows the way that I take; when he has tried me, I shall come out as gold.” Job 23 Conversations Within” ts 9/7/2016

“Control the things you can control.”

Accept with grace things beyond your control. This is a tough one for me at times, mainly because it is tough for me to control the things I can control--like my attitude about the things I can’t control. This is why we need grace for both. If we are finding it hard to change our attitude all at once, then we should at least nudge it in the right direction and keep nudging it until we have. Keep telling yourself not only that, it is what it is, but it is as God has allowed and His grace is sufficient for dealing with it.

“Protect yourself...from your own thoughts.” Rumi

Our own thoughts can sometimes be our greatest enemy. A runaway imagination, like a runaway train, can derail the peace of Christ in our hearts. The best way to stay on track is by holding fast to every promise of God. Of course to hold fast to His word means that we might first have to let go of our own thoughts. Stop listening to yourself and start speaking truth to your heart.

Take control...of yourself!

We have no control over many things that happen. We do have control over our responses to them. We can choose to respond with the grace that is found in faith, hope and love. We can have faith in the goodness of God and His great  power to bring it about. We can express our hope in His unfailing love by expecting great things from Him. And while we wait with faith and hope, we can give ourselves to expressions of love and lay hold of the joys of the present moment.

Service is the be all and end all of love.

There is a latin expression attributed to Cicero, “Non nobis solum nati sumus.” It translates, “We are not born for ourselves alone.” I think one of the reasons Jesus encourages us to call God, “Father”, is to remind us that we belong to a family and family always looks after each other. Lift up your eyes and look around; there are so many wonderful ways to serve the fam.

“Do well by doing good.” Unknown

Imagine how the world would change if everyday, everybody did good in everything. Some might argue how would we decide what is good? It is true that people do have different ideas about goodness. Jesus has a few practical suggestions of His own. He tells us to take care of people who have no means to take care of themselves--widows in need, orphans, refugees, and the like. There is plenty of good to spread around without debating the finer points. What does it matter if I feed a homeless man who is homeless because He is lazy. While I am not in favor of enabling the lazy, unconditional kindness may move them to get a job. Good is good.

“Stop trying to be amazing and start being useful.” Jay Baer

I would think if Christ desires anything for us where relationships are concerned, it is that we become useful to one another. Be the helping hand. Position yourself in people’s lives to be of service to them. Look out for your neighbor. Tend to the needs of the tribe. Expand the borders of your usefulness. Make it your ambition to assist. Be proactively and aggressively useful.

"In serving each other we become free.” First Knight (the movie)

How do we experience freedom in service? Well, for one, all submission to God is voluntary. There are consequences if we refuse Him, just as there are consequences for every decision we make. Yet He still gives us the freedom to choose. Freedom is not necessarily the power to do whatever we want, but the ability to do what we should. Doesn’t experience teach us that doing what we want often enslaves, while doing what we should sets us free?

“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in service to others.” Gandhi

When I serve others let me not do so like the mercenary working for hire, but like the soldier serving the country they love. When we serve others, we are not bartering our actions to God so He will let us into Heaven. A true servant expresses the core values of Heaven, because their heart is already there. The core value of Heaven is love.

Be useful to others. Embrace the freedom that is found in a simple life of loving service.

“The” commandment of God where others are concerned is to simply to love them. We love people when we serve them. There is great freedom to be found when we choose to live this way. We are set free from selfishness, and the prisons we construct when we get caught up living only for ourselves. It is said that God loves us and has a wonderful plan for our lives. He has made it clear that a part of that plan is for us to benefit the people in our lives.

Transformation is a journey through this world, not a destination. We arrive only when we leave this place.

No one has arrived where absolute goodness is concerned. Only God is perfect in goodness. Of course we believe as Christians that one day we will share this goodness with Him in glory. All that is left to us in this place is to keep walking. Every step in the direction of love brings us closer to being little Christs. It is best that we adopt an attitude that embraces the struggle to be good. I resolve to keep on keepin on till the eternal sun rises, and home at last, I can rest.
“Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own.” Phil.4 Conversations Within” ts 8/26/2016

"Success is the sum of small efforts - repeated day in and day out." Robert Collier

The first step of positive change is when we realize that we need change. This is followed by deciding how we go about it. This is why God gives us a traveling companion, not just a set of instructions. He bids us to keep in step with Him, and we must if we are to get past knowing our need for change. We must act. We must take the first step and keep on stepping. Follow the Spirit’s lead, and He will walk us through the dance of transformation.
