Living Sacrifices

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. Rm12.1 NKJV

The same apostle who said these words also warned us against man made religions which encourage us to not handle, taste or touch, as though abstinence from certain things will make one holy. And, of course, if one abstains from just about anything for the sake of loving another, it might do just that. The pursuit of loving God and others may lead us to do or not do many things. In order for us to present our body as a living sacrifice, we may first need to die to selfishness. 10/29/07 ts

Circular Reasoning

For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. He4.12 NKJV

Here is yet another scripture about the Scriptures. One may surmise that Christians use circular reasoning in their belief that the Bible is the word of God and more than just the words of men. In other words, when asked why Christians believe the Bible is the word of God the common reply is that the Bible tells us that it is. When asked why we believe this is true, the answer offered is that we believe this to be true because the Bible is the word of God. Now this would certainly seem to be circular reasoning and if understood only in these simple assertions then our belief would indeed be circular.
One summary offer about this, concludes that the many excellencies of Scriptures, the testimony of others about it, the unity and power of it message, may move and induce a person to believe that the Bible is the Word of God, but the bottom line is that we believe Scripture to be the very Word of God, because God Himself has worked this grace into our hearts. This somewhat makes the whole matter one of those things you must experience in order to understand or believe. I am not sure how this would change the accusation that our belief system is circular. Perhaps it is. After all, all things do begin and end in Him and that itself is a circle. Some may say that traveling in a circle leads you nowhere. It may be that traveling this circle orbits us around the only reality that is reality. 10/27/07 ts

Through all the Hoopla and Hullabaloo

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2Ti3.16 NKJV

It is no small thing that the Scriptures are the center of Christian reflection. Christians do not look to Paul, or Peter or any other fickle and frail human for enlightenment. One of the cornerstones of the Christian faith in the belief that God has spoken, and still speaks through the writings of these servants, though they are, and by their own admission, as flawed by sin as any other
Even now, as I reflect on these words I do not wish to hear myself ramble about in self serving and self deluding thought, but pray that God would speak to my heart in this medium. Nor do I rise each day to simply read an ancient book but to hear the voice of the living God.
Of course Scripture reports that Satan quoted Scripture to deceive Christ. And, any one who has heard the modern fare of televangelist know that men twist the Bible for their own egotistical purposes. Yet, though all the hoopla and hullabaloo, Father promises to meet us here around His word and speak to any who have hearts to hear and the courage to be corrected. The abuses of God’s word did not discourage Christ from saying, “It is written, ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’“ 10/26/07 ts

Songs are for sharing.

“speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, Eph.5.19 NKJV

Music is such a precious gift. It is one of those extras in life and as someone rightly said, “It is only goodness that gives extras.“
There are things expressed in song that cannot be other wise communicated. In recent years, the Lord has used my son to reawaken me to devotional exercises in song. Ben is all the time coming over with a new song to share. Someone shared a song via email with me yesterday. Songs are for sharing.
I remember as a young Christian, before contemporary Christian music was a category, I would express my soul to the Lord, using the lyrics of contemporary love songs. How blessed we are to have so many these days who express in song all that we would sing to Him in our heart. Of course, it is heart songs which are best. Sing to the Lord. Sing to the Lord a new song. Sing to the Lord your song! 10/25/07 ts

Waking

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. Pr.9.10 NKJV

I take it that the fear of the Lord mentioned here, is, at least in part, the realization that God is always present and always privy to our thoughts and actions. When we truly wake to God, the knowledge that He is there, can have a profound affect on what we are thinking and doing.
I recall a time in Wal-Mart when Brenda and I were having words. We rounded one isle on to another and ran in to some friends who immediately sensed the tension between us. The moment we realized that our private argument was no longer private, that awareness had a profound impact on us.
Waking to God is similar and has a similar affect. Perhaps in a heated or lustful moment we realize that we are not alone. God clears His voice, so to speak, announces His presence and just like that, the steam of our anger is drained away, or our lust abated, or pride humbled. I think we grow in wisdom not only as we wake to God’s presence but as we stay awake to it. 10/24/07 ts

All you need is love, except maybe…

Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. Ga6.2 NKJV

The law of Christ is rather simple. “Love one another.” Now, actually doing this, instead of knowing that I am supposed to do this, is not always simple. Loving is not liking someone and thank goodness it isn’t, for this would make loving some people not only impossible but undesirable. The love of Christ is helping others toward a greater good. The popular song. “All you need is love,” fails to mention wisdom and if love is to truly benefit the one we are loving, then, love certainly needs wisdom. Consider, when is it best to carry my brothers burdens and when is it best to let them carry their own? All we need is love, except maybe, wisdom, and faith and hope and all the other virtues which render love effective and fruitful. 10/23/07 ts

Speak only when spoken to

A man has joy by the answer of his mouth, And a word spoken in due season, how good it is! Pr15.23 NKJV

I am always encouraged when someone sends in a word that a particular devotional was just what they needed to hear that day. One feels blessed to be used by the Lord to encourage others especially in a timely fashion.
The wisdom offered in the word above is simple; take care with your words and your words will take care of you. Words are powerful and can work great good or evil.
We have all heard the words, “Speak only when you are spoken to.” And , though it may not capture the original usage of this expression, I would say that the percentage that others will find joy in our words, will increase in direct proportion when we speak only what Christ has spoken to us. 10/22/07 ts

The precious eyes of surrender.

My eyes are ever toward the LORD, For He shall pluck my feet out of the net. Ps25.15 NKJV

One Sunday Brenda and I returned home from church and found our yellow lab Sandy, laying helplessly trapped on the back porch. She had evidently started playing with the hammock, pulled it down and got her foot tangled in it. It was clear that she had struggled to get free, but by the time we got back home she was completely defeated. All she could do was plead for help with her precious brown eyes. I had to cut up the hammock to free her. We were grateful and relieved when the circulation slowly returned to her foot and she joyfully jumped around happy for her freedom.
I would have to say that most of the traps which have entangled my life have come from playing where I should not have been playing. But once trapped, it matters little to you how you got there, you just want to be set free. Are you trapped? Stop struggling and look to Him. He often waits for that surrendered look in our eyes before He will step in and free us. If I, as evil as I am, came to the rescue of my helpless dog, how much more will the Father come and rescue all who look to Him with the precious eyes of surrender. 10/17/07 ts

My most secret meditations

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O LORD, my strength and my Redeemer. Ps19.14 NKJV

It staggers the mind to realize that God hears not only all we say but all we think. As I have grown in my awareness of this, I am stretched in at least two directions. I find both discomfort and comfort in knowing this. My discomfort is due to the fact that I am often embarrassed by all that God has witnessed in my thoughts. Yet, my comfort comes from the simple truth that even though He knows my most secret meditations, He still loves me. This of course does not mean that He approves what I am thinking and He often lets me know this by interrupting my thoughts with His own. When this happens, I can either continue my line of judgmental, lustful, or self-centered thinking, or I can repent.
I know that in my own experience, Christ encourages me to reign in my wayward thoughts many times in an hour. And truthfully, this is sometimes required many times in a single minute. Our transformation surely begins on this battlefield of our thoughts. A verse I learned early in my Christian life is still spoken to my heart. “Cast down imaginations, and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and bring into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.” 2Co10.5 10/16/07 ts

Great Opportunity

Therefore You are great, O Lord GOD. For there is none like You, nor is there any God besides You, according to all that we have heard with our ears. 2Sam7.22 NKJV

The childhood prayer which begins, "God is great! God is good..." is a powerful description of God. Beyond the words, it is better to experience God’s greatness rather than describe or define it. In what ways do I know Him to be great? Well, He has been greatly patient with me for one thing. I marvel at this and often wonder why He has not given up on my transformation. Yet, every morning I wake and He is still there, ready to whisper inner encouragements.
We are told that God’s greatness is unsearchable but this does not make it unknowable. And, as we experience His great patience each day, let us avail ourselves also of His great power to be different than we are. God is not just great in patience, He is a great opportunity for change. Let us at least know His greatness in that. 10/15/07 ts

Non-conformist

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Ro12.2 NKJV

I sit this morning in a utility trailer, converted into a camper, looking out a clear shower curtain as a window. I am wearing tie died colored sweats, no shirt, it is fifty-five degrees outside and I dawns on me that I might be considered by my neighbors as a non-conformist.
Christ wants us to be non-conformist of a sort. Not just different to be different, but different because we think and act as God children. Christ would have us not conform but transform. Our non-conformity is because Christ is transforming the way we think, the way we see people and the way we view the world around us. His presence in us is turning us from darkness to light, from lust to love, from selfishness to service. 10/14/07 ts

Fret not, fear not.

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jer29.11 NKJV

The Lord is telling us His intentions. He speaks to the fretful, and the fearful. "Do not fret about tomorrow, I sent an angel yesterday with everything you need, even for those things you know nothing about. You cannot see into the next day but I have made arrangements for days without end. Because of Christ, your best days lie before you. Your future lies with Mine. And though you cannot imagine it, I eagerly wait to show you, all I have prepared for those who love Me."
What fears assail your heart; cancer, loosing a loved one, living alone? The Great I Am, has given His assurance, “I am with you always, even unto the end, and when the end has come, you will remain with Me. And, if I have promised you tomorrows without end, will I not be with you today? Fret not, fear not, My intentions always flow from My goodness and My plans always come to pass. 10/13/07 ts

Making Plans in the Garden

There are many plans in a man heart, Nevertheless the LORD counsel that will stand. Pro19.21 NKJV

Yesterday I told a new friend some of the ministry plans we are making after Sarah graduates. Last night I spoke with a friend about some of the ministry plans he and his wife are making next year. Now the simple truth is this, our plans will come into fruitful reality only in the counsel of Christ. God has promised not only to guide us with His counsel, but to establish the work of our hands when we seek and follow it.
Like most sincere Christians, I have worried, from time to time, about missing God’s will for my life. A good friend once gave me the assurance that, when I really want God’s will, I can be sure He will lead me in it. I think the problem lies in truly wanting God’s will, no matter what it may be. It that not what Christ prayed in the garden? 10/10/07 ts

Helping or Hindering

You shall walk after the LORD your God and fear Him, and keep His commandments and obey His voice; you shall serve Him and hold fast to Him. Dt14.4 NKJV

There are many things that would lead us away from our devotion to the LORD. People are chief among them. We normally think of false prophets and teachers that lead others to stray from faith in God. And, we certainly have our share of those. But, I wonder, when I spoke to the technical support person at Charter yesterday and expressed my impatience over interrupted internet service, if I helped this person draw closer or farther away from loving God. We are all the time either helping or hindering faith in others.
C. S. Lewis (who else) said, “There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal… But it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub and exploit - immortal horrors or everlasting splendors…All day long we are, in some degree, helping each other to one or other of these destinations."

We are His Signature

I, even I, am the LORD, And besides Me there is no savior.
Is43.11 NKJV

The modern state of Israel is nothing less than a miracle--the Church of Christ certainly no less. And, I do not use the word miracle lightly. What I mean, is that the existence of so many who pledge allegiance to the God of Abraham, is nothing less than a divine work in this world. The verse above is God’s signature to this, His declaration after preserving faith in Israel. In effect, the LORD is telling us to look at the wonder of a childless man named Abram, who is now the father of nations, and know that He did this. “I, even I, am the LORD…”
Is it not a marvel, that six thousand years have passed since God promised Abraham, that all the nations of the earth would be blessed in him and here we sit this morning and regard this simple goat herder as the Father of all who believe in God? God is saying, “I did this, no one else, trust me when I make a promise to you.” Our very faith is His signature, that He even He, is the LORD. 10/8/07 ts

The Point of no Return

“Seek the LORD while He may be found, Call upon Him while He is near.” Is55.6 NKJV

There are many phrases that come to us from the world of literature which depict what has been called “the point of no return.” Caesar’s “crossing the Rubicon,” “the die is cast,” and “burning bridges,” all refer to a point at which going back is no longer possible. Many times this “point of no return,” is decided in the soul long before it is manifest in ones actions. In the recent Harry Potter books, the young hero Harry, calls for the villain Voldemort to repent and show remorse over his wicked ways, but it is clear to everyone that the dark wizard not only will not, but that he cannot. The deceitfulness of sin has blinded his eyes and he has gone past the point of no return. Pointedly, his destruction comes to him by his own hands.
I think the many warnings given to us in Scripture tell us that we should repent, before we are unable to do so. It is then not so much that God refuses forgiveness, as it is the inability of the hardened heart to ask for or receive it. 10/5/07 ts

The Point of no Return

“Seek the LORD while He may be found, Call upon Him while He is near.” Is55.6 NKJV

Blessed Hope

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. 1Pe1.3 NKJV

What does the resurrection of Christ mean to me? Pretty much everything I suppose. I cannot think of a single aspect of my life that isn’t tied to it. All that I believe that is right and wrong, good and bad, all my values are founded on the rock rolled away from that tomb. My belief in that empty grave has given me all my other beliefs and laid the foundation of all that I am. My hope of Heaven, my favorable acceptance by God, all rest on a living Savior not a dead martyr. Why do I go to work today? Why do I give thanks for my food, or pray or play for that matter? Simply put, I would find life in every breath and every breath in the Author of life. Knowing that there is more to life than just this life has shaped my very purpose. All my hopes and dreams rest on His resurrection because in it I look to Him for my own. 10/3/07 ts

Walking on Pins and Needles

The fear of man brings a snare, But whoever trusts in the LORD shall be safe. Pr.29-25 NKJV

Sometimes our fear of people is not so much what they will do to us as it is what they might not do for us. A pastor once confessed that he was afraid of loosing church members if he didn’t jump through certain hoops for them. This fear was keeping him from effective ministry. Others have confessed a fear of a dominating boss, and sadly even hard to please husbands. There is little happiness when one has to walk on pins and needles around another. Fear brings a snare and truly robs us of joy.
Now the answer to fear is faith. When we trust God with our security we will find Him void of human fickleness. When He is the one director and audience of our life, we are set free of the fear of others. There is no want in those who have their minds fixed on the faithfulness of the Almighty. In this faith we may live with confidence and boldly say, “The LORD is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me?” Ps.118 NKJV

Good Company

“Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you. Mt.5.11-12 NKJV

I think that Jesus is not telling us to be happy about persecutions that come our way, but about them in so far as they reveal the company we keep. And, He is not referring to the company of those persecuting us but to that company of godly men and women who have suffered for His cause. We keep good company when we are branded by persecutions for His sake.
Now Christ is also not talking about persecutions which come to us for our own sake. Many Christian’s are persecuted because they have made themselves offensive and obnoxious to others by having anything but a gentle and quiet spirit. Many are persecuted because they are being stupid not because they have the spirit of the prophets.
But all who name Christ are promised persecution even if it is the gradual coldness of old friends who perhaps feel uncomfortable around the presence of Christ in them. 10/1/07 ts

Refusing Treatment

For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. Jo3.20-21 NKJV

The condemnation that rests on the world is our refusal to seek help with our rebellious character. A person who refuses to seek medical attention should certainly expect the consequences of such actions. Do we really expect anything less when it comes to the sickness in our souls.
Now no one, at least no one in their right mind, would blame the doctor if a person dies because someone refused treatment. But we run into people all the time who blame God when someone dies the spiritual death, hell, as the Bible calls it, even though it is the persons refusal to come to Christ which brings this tragedy. Now that someone would think this way, is evidence that people are not in their right mind. It is a wonder that any of us are saved. He is so very gracious. 9/29/07 ts
