“Do not plant your dreams in the field of indecision, where nothing ever grows but the weeds of "what-if." ~Dodinsky

“Choose you this day whom you will serve!” Joshua 24

I am bothered when I make a decision to do something, something I know is good and right and then fail to follow through with it. How many times must I decide to stop eating junk food, or rein in worthless words. Why can't I just decide right now that I will never say another unkind word to anyone or another critical word about someone. The truth is, that we can decide these things, but we must decide them every day all through the day, every time the temptation to do otherwise presents itself. Some things must be decided again and again. What good is a good decision today if I reverse it tomorrow. 12/24/11 Conversations Within ts (Birmingham, AL)

“The doors we open and close each day decide the lives we live.” Flora Whittemore

“Knock and the door will be opened to you.” Jesus

There are physical and spiritual doors in life. But I suppose the tangible doors we open are telling enough. I open the door of our refrigerator every day. What I keep inside it is certainly reflected in my mirror and on my scales. I also open the door to our camper and car everyday. Our choice to live on the road reveals a great deal about the kind of life we have chosen. We spend a lot of time outdoors which only shows my love of wood, wind and water. We also frequent the doors of family and friends. Sometimes we go see people behind the locked doors of a prison. There are other doors I think Jesus wants to open for me-the doors of the sick, the lonely, the oppressed, the orphan and widow. Doors are very telling of the life we lead. 12/23/11 Conversations Within ts (Birmingham, AL)

“Life is the sum of all your choices.” Albert Camus

“The Spirit wars against the flesh and the flesh against the Spirit.” Galatians 5

To say that life is the sum of our choices is just another way of saying that life is the sum of our desires, at least our strongest ones. Don't we always choose our greatest desire when we are able to do so? The key then to right choices would be to feed the right desires. We must stoke the stove of all we know to be good and right and true if its fire is to burn the brightest in our conflicted heart. Christians believe that this is where grace comes into play. God helps us by working in us proper desires that compete against those natural desires which have run amuck. 2/22/11 Conversations Within ts (Birmingham, AL)

“New Year's Day is every man's birthday.” Charles Lamb

“Teach me to number my days that I may apply my heart to wisdom.” Psalm 90

What is time to someone who is promised eternal life? Yet Jesus tells us to value time and to make the most of it; not because time itself is limited but the time left to us in this place certainly is. He put it this way. “Work while it is day, night is coming when no one will be able to work.” There are things entrusted to each of us during our sojourn here--chores that we must finish before the sun sets. We all share some of the same chores. Everybody is put here to enrich the life of others. But I think all of us have tasks uniquely assigned to us. One of the most important aspects of life is knowing what God wants me to do. One clue must surely be the resources entrusted to us. Yet, it is often in our weakness that we discover our greatest contribution to others. People like Helen Keller have showed us that God's power can be demonstrated as much, if not more, in what we do not have than what we have. 2/21/11 Conversations Within ts (On the road, AL)

“I think in terms of the day's resolutions, not the year's.” Henry Moore

“Keep in step with the Spirit.” Galatians 5

People who have gained freedom from various addictions have been given a precious gift. They understand that freedom comes to us a choice at a time. I have heard them refer to it as “my next right choice.” I may resolve to lose weight, quit smoking, start exercising, or begin any number of beneficial activities this next year but the truth is that any success I have, God willing, will come from one right decision following another. We can only live one choice at a time. God is that voice inside us, shining light on the right path, offering every encouragement to take it but decidedly leaving the choice to us. The choice has to be ours if we are to know true freedom. 2/20/11 Conversations Within ts (Camp Farrington, AL)

“People are so worried about what they eat between Christmas and the New Year,....

but they really should be worried about what they eat between the New Year and Christmas.” Author Unknown

Be where you are! Ecc. 9

I have never been much for special days. Every day is a birthday, a Sunday, a New Years Day. At least I want to live this way. Imagine living in such a manner that we treat each moment as if it were the only moment. It is not how we treat people on their birthday but how we treat them every day of the year that really matters. There should be no Sunday Christians. Everyday should be a Christmas, an Easter, a celebration of all that God intends life to be. The quality of our interactions each day should be as though we lived a thousand years in it. Rise up, redeem the time, savor every breath, be this moment, and every moment. 2/20/11 Conversations Within ts (Camp Farrington, AL)

“I heard the bells on Christmas Day Their old, familiar carols play, And wild and sweet The words repeat...

...Of peace on earth, good-will to men!” Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

“Peace on earth goodwill toward men.” Luke 2

There is surely a wildness to the sweet grace of God. He delights in every expression of mercy. I cannot help but wonder if the angels who made this first announcement were amazed that God would want peace with our rebellious rabble. One wonders what God the Father said to the Son on Christmas Eve. I can imagine Him saying something like, “I appreciate you doing this Son. They are going to mock you Jesus, beat and kill you, but I will use it to save them.” Wild and sweet indeed! 2/16/11 Conversations Within ts (Chelsea , AL

“Christmas! The very word brings joy to our hearts.”

“She gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.” Luke 2

If you ask ten Western people about some of their favorite memories, it would be a good bet that a Christmas memory would be one of them. My dear mother and dad helped make my every Christmas a magical memory. Glittering lights on our aluminum tree, eggnog, candy, presents, leaving cookies for Santa and in my home the annual reading of the Christmas story and the poem, Annie's and Wilie's prayer. I still love watching all the Christmas specials on TV, Rudolph and who could forget Charlie Brown's Christmas which always reminded us of the real reason for the season. I remember squinting in the bright lights of my Dad's Kodak Camera as He walked around on Christmas morning trying to record on film what was destined to never be forgotten anyway. Who could forget such wonderful memories? For me Jesus is the cause of all of this joy. Even when He is not center stage, He is the stage of everything good about life. He did not sign His name under every rock when He made the world but His presence still permeates every candy cane hung in this Blessed season. 12/14/11 Conversations Within ts (Jacksonville , FL)

“Three phrases that sum up Christmas are: Peace on Earth, Goodwill to Men, and Batteries not Included.” Author Unknown

“Unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies it remains alone but if it dies its brings forth much fruit.” Jesus

There are many things in this world that remind us that this life must pass if we are to be as happy as God intends us to be. No matter how wonderful our celebrations are in this place they will always lack the luster of all that is promised. Batteries are not included, festive lights have to be replaced, toys break, and loved ones fall ill and die even at Christmas time. But all these temporal trials serve to remind us that a more glorious age is coming. The Prince of Peace returns not to renovate and remodel this world but to demolish and replace it with a new one. The same can be said for each of us. The seed must fall to the ground and die before it is raised an eternal harvest. 2/16/11 Conversations Within ts (Chelsea , AL)

“The spirit of Christmas fulfills the greatest hunger of mankind.” Loring A. Schuler

“My peace I give you.” Jesus

In the simplest terms Jesus was born to bring peace on earth. Who doesn't want peace. That we want peace pretty much means that we don't have it as a lasting condition. We know moments of it, but like most things in this world, it passes. I tend to be in and out of it, sometimes several times a day. What is emphatic from the teaching of New Testament is that we already have peace with God because of His accomplishments on the cross. The problem is that we don't feel like we do and this spills over on to every thing else. The great test of faith is to ignore our feelings and believe! 2/15/11 Conversations Within ts (Jacksonville , FL)

“One of the most glorious messes in the world is the mess created in the living room on Christmas day. Don't clean it up too quickly.” Andy Rooney

“I am the light of the world!” Jesus

It is pure grace how the wonder of Christmas splashes its joy even on people who have never put personal faith in Christ. As the song says without ever mentioning His name, “Its the most wonderful time of the year.” People can't help tapping their toes when they hear good music and the melody of Jesus fills the world every Christmas season. We date our calendars around Him, His birthday is the world's most celebrated holiday. Jesus has left His mark on the world by giving us a season of gift giving, charity, lights and carols. People may try and take Christ out of Christmas but every celebration of family life, loving your enemies, sharing presents and hanging lights is unquestionably what He taught us to do. His influence is the fragrance of love. Trying to take Christ out of Christmas is trying to spell Christmas without the word Christ. 12/13/11 Conversations Within ts (Jacksonville , FL)

If we have ever questioned God's intentions toward mankind, Christmas is His answer.

“And on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased." Luke 2 NASB

God's answer to our pride is the humility of Jesus. His answer to our selfishness is His sacrifice. His answer to our rebellious hearts is abounding grace and love. Everyone of us is that prodigal child mentioned in the good book. And what are God's intentions for such a rebellious race? He declares them to the world every Christmas morning; He wants everyone to come home for the celebration. What celebration? Our return of course. 12/12/11 Conversations Within ts (Jacksonville , FL)

“To have joy one must share it. Happiness was born a twin.” Lord Byron

“Two are better than one.” Ecc.4

A meal is not a meal if it is not eaten, and joy is not complete if it is not shared. God made us in pairs. It is His kind intention that we not be alone but have family and friends and fellowship. It is a joy to belong. C. S. Lewis put it this way, “I think we delight to praise what we enjoy because the praise not merely expresses but completes the enjoyment; it is its appointed consummation. It is not out of compliment that lovers keep on telling one another how beautiful they are, the delight is incomplete till it is expressed.” 12/10/11 Conversations Within ts (Jacksonville , FL)

“...your sorrow will turn into joy.” Jesus

I think the power of joy lies in our focus. No matter what is going on around me where I chose to center my thoughts lives within me. Joy comes to us when we choose to gaze at the kind intentions of God in and through any circumstance. Humans have a great capacity for joy; it is worth considering what brings it to us.

Humans have a great capacity for joy; it is worth considering what brings it to us.

“...the joy of the godless is but for a moment? Job20

Everyone is capable of joy. What is so very telling is what causes us to have it. If I find joy in the suffering of others, say for revenge, or if it is a joy to me to get away with stealing, then my joy is perverted. One brother has said, “It is the stealing of the apple that is bad, not the sweetness.” It is easy to see that there is nothing wrong enjoying the sweetness of an apple but if it is sweet to my soul to steal it, that is a terrible corruption. Augustine confessed that he enjoyed stealing fruit from his neighbor's tree even when he did not care for the fruit. If revenge, or stealing or hurting someone is sweet to the soul then the very soul has gone bad. Monsters are made this way. Of course Augustine is remembered as a godly man which is so very telling of the power of repentance and faith. Grace can work change in our spiritual taste buds. 12/8/11 Conversations Within ts (Jacksonville , FL)

“Light is sown for the righteous, and joy for the upright in heart.” Ps.97

There is great confidence when you know that you have made the right choice even if there is a measure of suffering for it. Joy always comes to us when we center ourselves on all that is good and right and true. This means that joy, like the sun can rule the day. It can also, like the moon give light to us in the night. There is a quiet joy when we know that we are where God wants us to be. Such joy gives light to our way even in the darkest night 12/7/11 Conversations Within ts (Jacksonville , FL)

Imagine someone who is always thinking of ways to improve your life; who is always surprising you with some act of kindness. What a blessing it would be to know someone who is always encouraging you, building you up, lending you a helping hand; who is always there for you. Christian formula for lasting happiness; Jesus Others You!

“I have told you these things that my joy may be in you and your joy made full.” Jesus

From a Christian point of view, happiness is one of those things where proper priorities are important. When we choose to put God first and others before ourselves we are promised lasting happiness. We might wonder that if we do this to be happy then aren't we really putting our self first. Well in one sense, certainly we are! We must truly love ourselves before we can properly love God or anyone else. God doesn't mind if we seek happiness, He has wired it into our makeup. Jesus is not telling us not to make our joy a priority, He is telling us how we can best achieve it. He is telling us that it is wrong to seek only our own happiness. No one can be totally selfless, but we can certainly avoid being totally selfish. 12/5/11 Conversations Within ts (Jacksonville , FL)

“Love is the greatest touch-up artist of all.” Robert Brault,

“Pursue love.” 1Cor.14 ESV

Love is always in the details. We don't love people in a general way, we love them in particulars. The other day my brother invited me to go sit with him while he went hunting. We had carried two stadium chairs to put in the stand for comfort. One was of them was broken so you could not lean back in it. When I climbed up into the stand after my brother I noticed that he had given me the good chair. It is not just in big sacrifices that we show love but in small things, deliberately expressed everyday, year after year until the seed becomes the tree. The funny thing about love is that we begin to love whoever we purposefully serve. If I start showing kindness to a friend, a co-worker, a stranger and even an enemy my heart will follow and my love will grow. 12/3/11 Conversations Within ts (Shenandoah , AL)

“Love is a game that two can play and both win.” Eva Gabor

“Love your neighbor as yourself.” Jesus

When I first heard the idea of working for a “Win Win” in relationships I thought it was a contradiction to the teachings of Jesus to turn the other cheek. But I realize now that if I lose and my partner always wins then ultimately my partner is the one losing. If we are committed to our partners highest good then we simply can not allow this. If our partner is to win, we must help them see the importance of loving others as much as they love themselves and this may mean refusing to let them take advantage of us. Of course there are times when we may choose to turn the cheek if for no other reason than to communicate the same message. The Spirit will help us decide when and what response is best. 12/2/11 Conversations Within ts (Birmingham, AL)

“Love one another and you will be happy. It's as simple and as difficult as that.” Michael Leunig

“And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment...” Phil.1.9

Everyday is another day to love and to be loved. Surely there is no better life than to spend your day loving people. And, we could also say that there are times when nothing can be more difficult. This is why our love must mature in wisdom. Love seeks what is the best for those we love, wisdom shows us the best way to love them. What value is there in knowing what is best but failing to achieve it because of the wrong approach. Of course we can learn wisdom by trial and error, what we could call the hit and miss approach or we could use a better approach and just ask God for it. He has promised to give wisdom to those who ask. His greatest command directs us to our greatest need and that is to look to Him for the greatest results. 12/1/11 Conversations Within ts (Birmingham, AL)

“The art of love... is largely the art of persistence.” Albert Ellis

“Love bears all things.” 1Cor.13

Love is a commitment to seek the highest good of the people in our lives. This means that we must often be tenacious at it. I do not mean this in a pestering sort of way, but a patient one. Love bears all things, it puts up with a great deal in order to act in someones best interest. Love will suffer abuse, insult, even persecution if these things are necessary to benefit the ones we are seeking to love. Jesus of course is our example in this. Christmas pictures for us the great lengths that God will go to secure our highest good. Why else would God dress up like a human, and walk our fragmented world. 11/30/11 Conversations Within ts (Birmingham, AL)

“Love is an act of endless forgiveness, a tender look which becomes a habit.” Peter Ustinov

“Forgive.” Jesus

When you love someone, forgiveness will be a regular privilege. I say privilege because overlooking an offense is a necessary step to serve them and all service is a privilege. Jesus tells us it is because anytime we serve someone, He says that we are serving Him. Is there any greater privilege than that? When love matures there is even joy in pardoning, not in the offense mind you but because we have yet another opportunity to seek someones highest good. 11/29/11 Conversations Within ts (Birmingham, AL)

“Blessed is the season which engages the whole world in a conspiracy of love.” - Hamilton Wright Mabi

“God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3.16

Last year, during the Christmas Season, my wife and I stopped to get a Starbuck's coffee. When we pulled up to the window to pay, the attendant inside told us that the person in front of us had already paid for our order. The Spirit of Christmas inspires such acts of kindness which is to say that the Spirit of Jesus is working in people. I am absolutely certain that acts of love and kindness have the power to make a Christmas out of everyday of the year. “God is love, those who abide in love abide in God and God in them.” If we want more of God, it is as simple as loving people. 11/28/11 Conversations Within ts (Birmingham, AL)

May God help us to see through every disguised blessing.

“Your God turned the curse into a blessing for you, because the LORD your God loved you.” Deut.23.5

We all know that blessings are often hidden in difficulty. Faith teaches us how to penetrate the disguise. One reason is to help us persuade our heart to endure the trial and allow it to benefit us. Faith turns every obstacle into opportunity. But we must learn how to manage our doubts and let faith have that perfect work. If I tell myself that my present adversity is a scalpel in God's hand to heal me and not a knife in an enemies hand to hurt me, I will stop trying to squirm off the operating table. Easier said than done but it can be done if we talk, even argue ourselves out of moments of doubt and fear into a clear apprehension of God's good and gracious intentions towards us. Do I believe God is in control? Do I believe He loves me? Do I believe that no matter what comes He can use it for my good? Believe it! See it! Endure and embrace it! 11/25/11 Conversations Within ts (Between, GA)

“If God sends you down a stony path, may he give you strong shoes.”

"I will never leave you nor forsake you." God (Heb.13)

I am never alone. Even when I am alone I am not alone; God is always there. I guess it is a grace that I have always been aware of it, I even take it for granted. I am not always appreciative of His presence, I may even be angry with Him for some short sighted reason but even in those moments I know that He is there and not in some generic way, but in a personal one. Sometimes I think He is just standing there doing nothing to help me. These feelings never last long. I eventually realize that His being there is help enough. He patiently helps me to focus, to accept His help even though it may not be the kind of help that I want. Usually my self-induced trauma will settle and I realize that He is not only there but He is always there for a good reason, that He is not just there, but personally committed and attending to my highest good. 11/24/11 Conversations Within ts (Between, GA)

May the road rise up to meet you.

May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind always be at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, and rains fall soft upon your fields.... Unless of course you need a kick in the seat of your pants.

“Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons.” Heb.12

Who does not appreciate times of ease and gracious seasons of prosperity and health. But living on easy street may not always be in our best interest, especially if we have grown complacent about spiritual matters. Sometimes God lavishly spoils us like a grandparent but He certainly disciplines us as a parent. Thank Him that He does. I do not think He does this to punish for punishments sake but to prune us of things holding us back from growing up into Christ. He inspires us to greater spiritual heights. Sometimes this may mean a kick in the seat of the pants to get us moving. 11/22/11 Conversations Within ts (Between, GA)

“May your days be many and your troubles be few.”

“Moses was a hundred and twenty years old when he died, yet his eyes were not weak nor his strength gone.” Deut.34

Who would want to live a long life if it isn't a good life. If I wind up living to be an old man with few troubles as God undoubtedly appoints some to it, then I will consider myself most blessed. But if I do not make it to old age or if trouble finds me in my sojourn I am still blessed. All the beauty and magic of this place only entices me to a greater hope of the coming Kingdom. Why settle for many days when Jesus promises countless days. I recently took up surfing and absolutely love it. I find myself wishing I had discovered it when I was younger. But no matter, the Spirit often lays a hand on my shoulder and reminds me of the “Endless Summer” that is coming. 11/21/11 Conversations Within ts (Camp Farrington, AL)

“May you never forget what is worth remembering or remember what is best forgotten.”

“May you never forget what is worth remembering or remember what is best forgotten.”

“Remember the wondrous works that he has done...” 1Ch.16

The other day my wife poked me over buying Christmas presents this year and said, “You don't want to be a Scrooge.” I smiled and replied, “Yes I do.” I then reminded her that in the end Scrooge was a kind and giving person who overwhelmed people with his generosity. It is not how one starts but how one finishes that counts. We do tend to remember the bad in people rather than the good. I suppose it takes practice to change this. I feel certain that nurturing an attitude of thankfulness will work this change. It is a blessed person who chooses to see the world with grateful eyes. The next time I am tempted to think bad of something or someone, let me respond by offering thanks for at least one thing concerning it or them. If I can't, let me ask God for His help. 11/21/11 Conversations Within ts (Holy Ground, AL)

“May your walls know joy, may every room hold laughter, and every window open to great possibility.” Mary Anne Radmacher

“...and Jacob blessed Pharaoh.” Gen.47

It used to be customary to give a blessing to someone when you met or departed. A blessing sounds rather formal and we are a casual generation, a sort of off-the-record kind of culture. A blessing is a prayer for someone, not merely wishing they would get better or pass a test. Perhaps we would do well to return to the practice and make our prayers official by going on-the-record so to speak and tell people exactly what we are asking God to do for them. “May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you. May the Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace.” 11/20/11 Conversations Within ts (Between, GA)

“He who sits by the fire, thankless for the fire, is just as if he had no fire.” ~W.J. Cameron

“Then Jesus answered, "Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine?'” Lk.17

Of all the sins of men, ingratitude reflects our self-centered pride the most. The very air we breathe is borrowed, the life and operations of every cell that make up our body is held together by the Father of life. No child insults a parent more than the person who refuses to acknowledge and appreciate God for the life given them. We were purposefully created to enjoy Him in all things and above all things. Our failure to do this is to miss the true meaning of life and to substitute death for life. 11/17/11 Conversations Within ts (Between, GA)

“On Thanksgiving Day we acknowledge our dependence.” William Jennings Bryan

“Give us this day our daily bread.” Jesus

There are some things we never outgrow. I remember having to trust God to take care of us while I was studying in seminary. After graduation I got my first job making more money than I ever had before. When the church told me what I would be making I looked at Brenda and quietly but excitedly said, “We're rich.” I think in the back of my mind I thought we were going to do fine financially and did not need God to take care of us like we needed Him to get through school. Never having made so much money I got careless with spending and in a couple of months we spent all of my salary but forgot to pay the electric bill. I felt foolish and embarrassed and did not know what to do. The very next day we got a check in the mail from the seminary saying that we had overpaid our tuition. The check was almost the exact amount of the electric bill. I think this was God's way of telling us that we never outgrow our need to look to look to Him or be responsible with what He entrusts to us. 11/16/11 Conversations Within ts (Between, GA)

“We can only be said to be alive in those moments when our hearts are conscious of our treasures.” Thornton Wilder

“Give thanks to the Lord for He is good.” Ps. 100

My children are fond of telling me that when you live on the road, everyday is Friday. I think for those living in the free world, thankfulness should not only be a holiday but a way of life. I want to be the kind of person who is so filled with gratitude that complaint, criticism or feeling sorry for myself would all be foreign languages to me. Let me wake to the sheer joy of all that I have been given and if it is ever taken away, to the joy of what can never be. 11/15/11 Conversations Within ts (Augusta, GA)

“Praise the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.” Ps.103

I forget. I forget people's names; the end of movies I have watched; I forget to do things, or keep promises and most regrettably I forget all that God has done for me in my brief sojourn. I am amazed that I would doubt anything where God's provision, protection or guidance is concerned. Never once has He failed to come through for me. I could fill a book with story after story of not only answers to prayers but daily interactions. Blessed Lord forgive my silly forgetfulness of all you have done for me through the years. Help me remember and recount Your faithfulness. 11/14/11 Conversations Within ts (Augusta, GA)

“The Pilgrims made seven times more graves than huts... nevertheless, set aside a day of thanksgiving.” H.U. Westermayer

“l give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart.” Ps.9

People of hardship are often the most thankful. Like hardened trees growing on a wind blown summit, the gusts of tough times have pruned away any dead limbs of ingratitude and caused the roots of trust to grow deep into the Rock of Ages. Such people possess an inner strength, a solidness of faith expressed in simple gratitude. The thankful hearts of such people are unmoved by the howling blasts of adversity. 11/13/11 Conversations Within ts (Augusta, GA)

and grace before I open a book...before sketching, painting, swimming, fencing, boxing, walking, playing, dancing and grace before I dip the pen in the ink.” G.K. Chesterton

I have said the blessing over many a meal while in the grocery store walking through the abundance of fruits and vegetables that surround me. Is there ever a time or place amid such blessings where saying grace is not appropriate? Thanksgiving is also receiving. Center your heart on God's praise and the power of a grateful spirit will guard your heart and mind from any evil this world may conjure. Praise is the shield of those who bless the name of the Lord. “The trouble with being poor is that it takes up all your time.” Willem de Kooning

“The LORD makes poor and makes rich; he brings low and he exalts.” 1Sa.2

The poor can be more preoccupied with money than the rich. Those that have are often less worried about losing their money than those who have not are about getting it. This may be false security on the part of the wealthy but ditto that for the poor. If we have food and clothing the Good Book says that we should be content and equally believe whether poor or rich that God is the one who takes care of us. It is one thing for me to be frugal with the money entrusted me and another to be preoccupied with it. 11/10/11 Conversations Within ts (Fernandina Beach, Fl)

“My poverty is not complete: it lacks me.” Antonio Porchia

“Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Jesus

I am a poor man, poor in ways I am still discovering. I do not mean poor by material standards. I possess riches that even King Solomon did not have. He could not have an ice cold beverage anytime he wanted one or drive sixty miles an hour in an air conditioned chariot listening to any music I desire. He could not instantly talk to a friend or family member half way around the world. The reason I say I am poor is that I still find myself eating the pig slop of lesser desires when infinite joy is mine for the having. I still find it hard to break the habit of the old me and put on the new me. 11/9/11 Conversations Within ts (Jax, Fl)

“Seldom do people discern eloquence under a threadbare cloak.” Juvenal

“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.” 2Co.8

I miss a lot Lord. I fail to see others as I know You want me to see them. My prejudices blind me. Tap me on the shoulder, rouse me anyway you can and help me pay attention to the people around me. Wake me to the beauty you see in people. Help me to never divide people , at least in a discriminating way, into poor, rich, girl, boy, white or black, Christian or not. If I make a judgment let it be to see people as made in your image, potential princes and princesses in your kingdom. 11/8/11 Conversations Within ts (Jax, Fl)

“We have grown literally afraid to be poor. We despise anyone who elects to be poor in order to simplify and save his inner life.” William James

“Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him?”James 2

It is not a sin to be poor. As a matter of fact I can think of times when voluntary poverty is a virtue. Some choose to live on less to give more, their poverty is a sacrificial offering to God. I know parents who take a cut in pay to spend more time at home with their children; their treasure is in family not stuff. Some prefer looking to God for daily bread instead of trusting the false security of an annual income. Jesus was poor by this world's standards. He spent his life serving others instead of paying a mortgage and chose service over salary. None of this is to say that if you own a nice home or make lots of money you are a servant of money instead of a servant of God. It is to say that those who are rich in faith have real wealth; money is just a tool to serve it. 11/7/11 Conversations Within ts (Jax, Fl)

“Poverty sits by the cradle of all our great men and rocks all of them to manhood.” Heinrich Heine

“...were made strong out of weakness...” Heb.11

God has used poverty plenty of times to work great wealth of character in people. History is replete with examples of this. Think of a great person and chances are that poverty or adversity was one of the tools God used to shape their greatness. The Lord's strength is found in our weakness. If I find myself in meagerness of money or means or health, I am in a position to discover the great wealth of God. It is not poverty itself that is good, but the power of God discovered in it when I look to Him. Doing without often works wonders within if we allow it to. 11/6/11 Conversations Within ts (Jax, Fl)

“I am positive that one of the great curatives of our evils... would be a return to the soil, a rehabilitation of the work of the fields.” Charles Wag

“The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.” Gen.2

A good many people are returning to growing their own vegetables or at least buying them locally grown. Health concerns are one reason but I cannot help but believe that something resonates in us when we somehow manage to get closer to the earth. There is something therapeutic about getting back to nature. I believe that planting a garden, keeping a house plant, making something with your hands are all a means of grace. I think God meets people when they do these things just as He does in prayer and meditation. Stray too far from working with your hands and the soul will miss out on an intended means of knowing God. 11/5/11 Conversations Within ts (Jax, Fl)

“Everything in the world may be endured except continual prosperity.” Goethe

“Take care lest you forget the LORD...” Deut.6

It is said that we do not know what we have until it is taken away but it doesn't have to be this way. We are told to enter God's gates with thanksgiving. Good advice! The simple words, “Thank you,” will help me not forget how wonderful it is to see, to walk, to taste. The appreciative words, “I am grateful...” can give us eyes to see God's many blessings. I have noticed a number of people writing out one thing they are thankful for every day during the month of Thanksgiving. This sound like a good practice everyday of the year. This morning I wrote that I am grateful for scented shampoo because it reminds me how good I have it. 11/3/11 Conversations Within ts (Jax, Fl)

“How can a society that exists on instant mashed potatoes, packaged cake mixes, frozen dinners, and instant cameras teach patience to its young?” Paul

“A wise son loves discipline...” Prov.

I recently had a friend ask me to pray that God would give her opportunities to learn patience. Boy I was impressed with such a brave request. Most of us appreciate maturity even if we do not appreciate the trials that cause it. I suppose it is a good thing if we learn to value pain as the necessary means to bring to us some gain. Not that we say, “Oh boy,” when adversity comes our way, but perhaps we would do well to give thanks even as we ask for grace to bear it. One is not made strong if never asked to carry some burden nor can we learn patience without circumstances that demand it of us. 11/2/11 Conversations Within ts (Jax, FL)

“What has always made a hell on earth has been that man has tried to make it his heaven.” Friedrich Holderlin

“And after my skin has been thus destroyed, yet in my flesh I shall see God.” Job 19

The recent death of Steve Jobs at fifty-six, is a sobering reminder that none of us can expect to remain very long in this place. I know this, everybody knows this, but we manage to push it into the background of everyday life. I suppose this is good if it allows us to function but bad if we fail to appreciate its lesson. That lesson of course is to live for fruit that will follow us after we leave this place. When God prospers us here by giving us health or a long life it is never to strengthen our ties to the sinking ship of this world. We should never waste time building castles in the sand. The tide is coming in. 11/1/11 Conversations Within ts (Jax, FL)

“We cannot get grace from gadgets.” J.B. Priestley

"Take care...one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions." Jesus

We are a gadget generation. I often wonder how my life would change without my smart phone or computer. Like all material possessions, contraptions can trap us in a wasteland of empty pursuits. Things are meant to serve us in our pursuit of the eternal purpose never imprison us to the trivia of the temporal. This is not to say that we cannot use these things for personal enjoyment, it is to say just the opposite. If they serve my attachment to eternal things I can give thanks for it and use it. I suppose the grave is the grand sift. If it won't pass through that, use it, don't become attached to it. 10/31/11 Conversations Within ts (Marianna, FL)

“Once you become aware that the main business that you are here for is to know God, most of life's problems fall into place of their own accord. " J.I

“Fear God and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.” Ecclesiastes 12:13

The wisdom literature of the Bible consistently points to one prevailing attitude and repeatedly refers to it as “the fear of the Lord.” The fear of the Lord is a loving respect and humble acceptance of His directives. A proper fear of God may start out as a fear of punishment if we do wrong but it matures to loving respect for Him as our Father. It is to acknowledge His rightful place to tell us what to do, do it and to accept from His hand all He chooses for us in life. The fear of the Lord moves us to praise Him when the road is marked with sunshine or with suffering. “The Lord gives and the Lord takes away, Blessed be the name of the Lord.” 10/29/11 Conversations Within ts (Holy Ground, AL)

Worship is the very wonder of life and every wonder may give birth to worship. Incorrect thoughts about God can never diminish His true worth, just our experiences of it.

“The Lord is good.” Ps.100

God is good all of the time but I may not experience that goodness if I question it when something bad comes my way. If I am suspicious of God's kind intentions bitterness may deprive me the gift of His peace in the midst of some trial. If I see God as an uncaring impersonal deity, then everything that happens to me will be influenced by my prejudices notions. Like a wild animal I may try to bite and scratch the hand that comes to free me from the snare that I have entangled myself in. Sometimes the way we see God becomes the snare that entangles us in a sea of doubt and suspicion. 10/27/11 Conversations Within ts (Holy Ground, AL)

“Early will I seek you.” Ps.63

Worship never fails to cure the worries of the world. Whenever I listen to some song of praise, every fear subsides, the tempestuous seas of my heart become tranquil waters and I know that I am safe in the mighty arms of the Most High. I wish to build into the rhythm of my morning and evening prayers such songs of adoration and praise. I would be well versed in worship, that it would be an expression as natural as breathing, the familiar ground I walk, so that I may bask in the warmth of God's pleasure and find His smile my greatest treasure. 10/26/11 Conversations Within ts (Holy Ground, AL)

Great thoughts of God will inevitably produce great faith in God; this equation can be reversed.

“My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord.” Mary (Mother of Jesus)

I confess that my faith in God is often hindered when I look around me instead of looking above me to all His promises. If I really believed all the things I have written about Him in my reflections I would know it is utterly impossible for Him to not keep a promise. It is all a matter of focus. I can hold up a small dime and block out the sun. I need to stop looking at my petty problems and lift my gaze to the One who sits enthroned in the Heavens, who calls me His son, who has seen me through countless trials and who promises that the one in front of me now is no match for His power and of no consequence to His love. 10/25/11 Conversations Within ts (Holy Ground, AL)

“Great thoughts of God ennoble all of life. Small thoughts of God destroy those who hold them.” William MacDonald

"God is great!" Ps.70

A recent toothache pushed me to review some of my feelings toward God. I remember pacing back and forth in the middle of the night telling Him that while I knew pain to be a good thing, the level of pain I was experiencing was absolutely unnecessary. I angrily asked what would prompt Him to create such a terrible thing. After my bruised tooth settled down, my bruised soul realized that there were levels of pain that could shake my faith in God's wisdom and goodness. The little test, if I could call it such, has not only persuaded me that I do believe in His goodness and wisdom but that I also believe that His grace alone can sustain my faith in moments of doubt. How wise is our God to make pain as well as pleasure. Help me when I doubt this Lord. 10/24/11 Conversations Within ts (Holy Ground, AL)

"When humans should have become as perfect in voluntary obedience as the inanimate creation is in its lifeless obedience,..

...then they will put on its glory, or rather that greater glory of which Nature is only the first sketch." C. S. Lewis

"I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out." Jesus

Every non-living thing obeys God. A rock always does what a rock is supposed to do. Water always seek the lowest point because God commands it to do so. The sun, moon and stars travel the course that is set for them. The laws of nature never fudge in their obedience. The same cannot be said for living creatures. It seems that when man rebelled, all nature, at least all living things went renegade. Murder, cancer, malaria are all rogue behavior. God is still Lord over all of this. But at least for the present it is His will that living things be able to resist His will. Let me obey God like water obeys Him but as a living creature freely choosing obedience and His Kingdom will come, if only in my heart. 10/22/11 Conversations Within ts (Montgomery, AL)

“One can believe intellectually in the efficacy of prayer and never do any praying.” Catherine Marshall

“Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.” Jesus

Knowledge is useful only if it serves doing. It is doing that defines whether we experience life as God intends. Doing, not knowing, is always the means to, and the final measure of, every benefit. To believe in the value of prayer or reflecting on God's word, but practicing neither, is like sitting at a table of delicious food looking but not eating. Knowing without doing is to die of thirst holding the water of life in your hand. 10/21/11 Conversations Within ts (Montgomery, AL)

The freedom to disobey is not the problem, disobeying is.

“Sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned--” Rom.5

That a perfect God would give us the power to choose is reason enough to believe that our freedom to do so is necessary to know and love Him. The freedom to choose has never been our problem. Everything wrong with the world is the abuse of that freedom just as everything right with the world is the proper use of it. True submission to God is always voluntary and motivated by love. Forced compliance would never work in Heaven. There will be no police in Glory. 10/20/11 Conversations Within ts (Camp Carols, AL)

Doing is everything! Nothing happens till you flip the switch, take the step, practice what you know, and where God is concerned, do what you are told

“And he did not do what was right in the eyes of the LORD...” 2Ch.28

It is silly to blame a diet for not working if we do not do what it tells us to do. The same may be said for our faith. People tell me all the time that they tried trusting God and it did not work. I know that when I feel this way it is usually because I am using the word trust to mean something other than obey. I have always found trusting God to work when trust moves me to do something and I do it. 10/19/11 Conversations Within ts (Camp Farrington, AL)

Obedience is the joy not the burden that Jesus would teach us.

Obedience is the joy not the burden that Jesus would teach us.

“You will abide in my love if you keep my commandments. I tell you these things so that my joy may be in you and your joy made full.” Jesus

It is often my struggle to comply that teaches me the absolute wisdom that I do so. If I find obedience to God's will a burden this only persuades me that obedience is my best course of action. Think about it. Most of the things that are good for us are things that we find a burden to do—at least at first. Eating right, exercise, moderation, saying no to certain fleshly appetites are all points of struggle within us simply because we know we should be doing them and aren't. It is when we finally cross over and do them that we will discover the joy of obedience. Finding joy in obedience is learning to dance to rhythm of righteousness. 10/18/11 Conversations Within ts (Camp Farrington, AL)

Nobody likes to be told what to do; wisdom is the only cure for this.

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.” Pro.1

Most adults understand the value of instruction for children. Wisdom teaches us to never forget its value to us. Maturity is not outgrowing our need to obey good instruction but learning to value it as the means to wisdom and joyful living. Children often obey because of the fear of punishment if they do not. This will only work for a while. This fear is properly replaced by respect for authority and eventually a love for wisdom. God is the personification of wisdom so learning to fear Him, respect Him, love Him is all it means to mature and be wise. If wisdom is to teach us anything it must first teach us to love instruction. 10/17/11 Conversations Within ts (Backroads, AL)

“Modesty is my best quality” Jack Benny

“...we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.” Rom.5

I think it is best to work toward being modest than to just have modest moments. Of course this could be said for any number of virtues. My present life is a series of dots which I trust God will connect into one continuous line. Things like modesty, humility, kindness are desirable as character qualities not just sporadic acts strung along life's path. But certainly when we choose a moment of modesty or kindness and do it over and over again, such perseverance becomes habit and habits have a way of becoming character. There is no magic formula that will turn us overnight into the person we want to be. We cannot expect the harvest of a godly character without planting and cultivating of godly actions. 10/14/11 Conversations Within ts (Pisgah National Forest, NC)

“I have often wished I had time to cultivate modesty... but I am too busy thinking about myself.” Edith Sitwell

“Let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart...” 1Pet.3 ESV

I am not a modest person but there is a modest person living inside me. I like an audience; He enjoys not letting His left hand know what His right hand is doing. I talk too much--especially about myself; He is quiet and focuses on encouraging others. I am an open book revealing too much; He is understated beauty . I wear too much cologne, He is that delicate scent, that hint of aroma that invites. I am shamelessly naked and He is clothed with compassion and grace. “Naked come to thee for dress, Helpless look to thee for grace, foul I to the fountain fly, wash me Savior or I die.” 10/13/11 Conversations Within ts (Pisgah National Forest, NC)

“It is far more impressive when others discover your good qualities without your help” Miss Manners

“Let another praise you and not your own lips.” Pro.27

Love does not boast or call attention to itself, neither does a modest person. I think the essential quality of true modesty is to have a proper perspective about oneself, especially in relation to God and to others. Simply put, we are put here to love, to be an overflowing spring not a holding tank. A modest person is never “Here I am,” but “There you are.” A modest person is too busy considering others than to waste energy drawing attention to themselves. ”He who speaks without modesty will find it difficult to make his words good.” Confucius

"Does not the ear test words as the palate tastes food?” Job.12

There can be modesty in speech just as there can be modesty in the way we dress. We generally think of modesty as not revealing too much flesh but certainly no one should reveal everything they are thinking as well. I am guilty on both accounts. People who know me know I don't like clothing. I am always running around without a shirt. Its a comfort thing. I am also guilty of blurting out whatever I am thinking at the moment. As I sit in the light of wisdom, I realize that I am not thinking about others when doing either. It's a rude thing. 10/11/11 Conversations Within ts (Pisgah National Forest, NC)

“At least I have the modesty to admit that lack of modesty is one of my failings.” Hector Berlioz

Like a gold ring in a pig's snout is a beautiful woman without discretion. Pro.11 ESV

It is fascinating that we can take pride in knowing that we have a problem with pride. It is certainly a good thing to know one's undesirable traits but only when this knowledge lead us to do something about them. To admit what you are doing is wrong but then refuse to stop doing it is like seeing your neighbor's house catch on fire but not calling the fire department. Modesty is the result of not only knowing your faults but dealing with them. Modesty is a restraining influence. It moves us to be humble about our strengths and repentant about our shortcomings. Modesty is the twin sister of humility. 10/10/11 Conversations Within ts (Pisgah National Forest, NC)

“The less you reveal the more people can wonder.” Emma Watson

“Let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious.” 1.Pet.3

Modesty is about so much more than dress but it is certainly reflected in it. Modesty is the ambiance of the whole person. Its presence can be the hint of a pleasant aroma; its absence, an overpowering odor. Modesty conceals yet subtly reveals. It causes those who pass by to pause and wonder if there is more here than meets the eye. Like a well done cover of an old book, it invites people to explore and discover the hidden treasures of one's inner life. Modesty is never flashy but none-the-less inviting--in a good sort of way. 10/9/11 Conversations Within ts (Brevard, NC)
