"Prayer is not overcoming God's reluctance, but laying hold of His willingness." Martin Luther

“Ask and it will be given unto you.” Jesus

Prayer is not giving advice to God; it is joining Him as a partner in blessing others. God wants us to share in the blessing of dispensing His blessings to others. When we pray we do not convince God to act, instead we channel His willingness to do so into the lives of people and situations. God can and does bless people without our prayers but I think He prefers to involve us--sort of like blessings two birds with one prayer. Conversations Within” ts 8/25/2014

"Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value." - Albert Einstein

“You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit--fruit that will last.” Jesus

Some have compared our brief life to a hand removed from a bucket of water. Soon afterward there is no evidence the hand was there at all. Even so, some people have contributed something of lasting value long after they have gone. Will my life count for anything? Is it vain to want it to do so? Well, I guess that depends on if I want to be famous or fruitful, vain or valuable? Conversations Within” ts 8/23/2014

“Those who think they have not time for bodily exercise will sooner or later have to find time for illness.” Edward Stanley

“I discipline my body and make it my slave.” 1Cor.9

The body is a tool of the soul. It is wise to take care of your tools. We should exercise the body to serve the soul but not vice-versa. Make your body your slave rather than be a slave of your body. Give no room for vanity in diet and exercise. Don’t exercise for something silly like looking good but rather to live good. We cannot add a single hour to our life but we can improve the quality of the hours given to us.   Conversations Within” ts 8/22/2014

“Cure yourself of the affliction of caring how you appear to others.” Miguel De Unamuno

"Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” Jesus

We are the selfie generation. It says much about our desire to be noticed. I suppose it is one thing to want a witness to our lives and another to want an audience. I should think it better to be one who acts and is noticed than one who acts to be noticed.  Conversations Within” ts 8/20/2014

“Nothing is built on stone; all is built on sand, but we must build as if the sand were stone.” Jorge Luis Borges

“But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.” Jesus

Devote yourself as much as possible to things of lasting value. So much of what we do is waste and worthless, similar to building castles in the sand. Of course, taking time to build a sand castle with your son or grandson may lay a solid foundation for a lifelong and profitable relationship . Faith, hope and love have the power to transform the temporal into something eternal and the mundane into a lasting marvel. Conversations Within” ts 8/20/2014

“Vanity is but the surface.” Blaise Pascal

“For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart” 1Sam16

We must learn to live below the surface if we are to discover something more than a superficial life. God has buried some beautiful things deep inside, not to keep them hidden, but to teach us the value of seeking and finding. Do not waste your life with pebbles on the surface when there are diamonds below. Do not let the outer shell of the oyster keep you from seeking the pearl inside. Life must be nurtured on the inside if it is to be rightly expressed on the outside. Conversations Within” ts 8/19/2014

You post a picture of yourself and realize your inclinations to be vain, so you post a picture of your family so you won’t look vain. Face it, either way you’re vain!

“All is vanity!”

Humans are a vain lot. We seldom see the whole world around us because of the small world in us. We seem trapped by the pull of our own gravity. But there is no sense beating ourselves up about it. Realizing that we are vain can be the first step of gaining victory over it. Such victory comes to the ones who lose themselves in service to others. It is in giving that we finally come to discover our purpose.  Conversations Within” ts 8/18/2014

God creates an environment of freedom so that real learning might happen.

“I am the way, the truth and the life and no one comes to the Father without me.” Jesus

I had a professor in college who told us the first day of class the questions he would ask on the final exam. He said that he wanted us all to get an “A” for the course and did not want us to have to guess what he expected. Jesus has done the same thing for us as we prepare for Judgment Day. He has said plainly, “No one comes to the Father without me.” The Father is really looking for one thing at judgment--the evidence of His Son’s presence in us. Conversations Within” ts 8/16/2014

“...and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ--the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith.” Phil.3

The awareness that I will give an account for my life on the Day of Judgment should not paralyze me with fear but excite me with action that God has forgiven my sins because of Christ and will remember the labors of my love. Give yourself fully to this day and you will be ready for that Day. Judgment Day is either a rewards ceremony or a reckoning for sin. We decide which.    Conversations Within” ts 8/15/2014

“That feeling you get after finishing your last exam.” Anonymous

“Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.” Jesus

Who does not remember the utter joy of finishing all your exams? How wonderful when school was over and life lay ahead. I am sure we will experience a similar joy, but to a much greater degree, when we finish our finals in God’s classroom and He lets us out of school to romp and stomp forever. How do we prepare to meet God on the day of Judgment? I suppose the best way to prepare for that day is to meet with Him every day. It helps when the person giving the exam has been your tutor. Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord. Heb.12

I once learned a hundred and ten dates in ten minutes for a history final. Of course I can’t remember any of them today. It is not possible to cram for our final exam in life. I quite agree with C. S. Lewis, "The point is not that God will refuse you admission to His eternal world if you have not certain qualities of character: the point is that if people have not got at least the beginnings of those qualities inside them, then no possible external conditions could make a 'Heaven' for them.” Christ is the seed of lasting transformation. “Life is a balance of holding on and letting go.” Keith Urban

“Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.” Rom.12

It is said that God cannot fill our hearts if they are already full of other stuff. It is easy to see the benefit of letting go of worry, doubts, and fears. It is easy to see that we should let go of unforgiveness, and bitter feelings. so that His Spirit can fill our heart with love, joy, peace and patience. What is difficult to see is that sometimes the goodness He wants us to hold on to in our heart is shaped like a cross.   Conversations Within” ts 8/8/2014

“There's no secret to balance. You just have to feel the waves.” Frank Herbert

“Do not be excessively righteous and do not be overly wise. Why should you ruin yourself?” Ecc.7

Balance is the wisdom that keeps us from being too, too wise, too far to the right, or too far to the left--actually, too anything! Avoid extremes, even the extreme to never be extreme. If life is leaning too far to the right you may be required, if for a moment, to run to the left. Better yet, keep your boat on an even-keel.
