"Prayer is not overcoming God's reluctance, but laying hold of His willingness." Martin Luther.

God is able to make us sure-footed even on unlevel ground. Believing God’s promises enables confidence on the slopes of all uncertainty; obeying His commandments provides direction through the fog of any indecision. “Trust in the Lord with all of your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all of your ways acknowledge Him He will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3 Conversations Within” ts 12/25/2015

Do not put your confidence in prayer. Put your confidence in God. The same can be said of living for Him.

To be in the King’s highway and on the King’s business is to be under the King’s provision and protection. Here and here alone are we safe from all fears without and within. Our own frailty and failings offer us nothing. Why trust them? We express our faith in God by committing our lives not only to His care but also to His concerns. “In the fear of the LORD one has strong confidence...” Prov.14 Conversations Within” ts 12/24/2015

“Don't pray for things as if you were making wishes at a wishing well.” Anonymous

Great confidence in God is the mark of a mature faith. None of these “mealy-mouthed” prayers, we should learn to be bold in our request. If anything is worth praying about in Jesus’ name, pray over it with the confidence that God is pleased that you have asked it from Him. “Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession.” Ps.2.8 ESV Conversations Within” ts 12/23/2015

“If I had asked my customers what they wanted they would have said a faster horse.” Henry Ford

It is a good thing that God does not always give us all we ask from Him. Prayer is not an opportunity for us to counsel Him about what needs to be done, but an opening for us to put matters into His wise hands. And, like any good parent, He answers us with an infinitely greater understanding of what is needed. He gives us so much more than our weak imaginations can conjure.  “Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us…” Eph.3 Conversations Within” ts 12/21/2015

The prayer you prayed today was probably answered yesterday.

Recently I felt lead to pray for someone who became a quadriplegic at a young age. She has spent the greater part of her life staring at the ceiling. I prayed fervently for God’s mercies even that He would take her home and free her from the prison of a broken body. Later that day I found out she had already died. I could not help but wonder why I felt so strongly about praying for her that morning. Almost immediately the Spirit whispered in my heart, “I am always a step ahead of you son.” “Before you call I will answer.” Is.65 Conversations Within” ts 12/21/2015

“Four A.M. knows all my secrets!” Poppy Z. Brite

Nights are not just for sleeping. The Scripture say much about watching at night: being vigilant at night: and of praying in the night. Jesus is said many times to have prayed all night.  And while we are told to work while it is day before the night comes, surely there are times required of us to remain awake even at night. When it is required remember this:  ~”The LORD will command His lovingkindness in the daytime; And His song will be with me in the night, Ps.42 Conversations Within” ts 12/18/2015

“I will be home Christmas!”

Bring it home for Christmas! God not only loved the world so very much when He gave us His Son, He loved me that much. St. Augustine brought it home when He said,  “God loves each of us as if there were only one of us.” We each have our very own personal gift to open from God. Bring it home and make it yours. Embrace it with your heart, “God so loved me that He gave His only begotten Son that when I believe in Him, I will not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3,16

“The Son of God became a man to enable men to become sons of God.” C.S. Lewis

Here is the true meaning of Christmas. I am sure that becoming a man was not an easy transition for Jesus; nor is our transition into sons of God. We must acquire a taste for all things eternal having lived so long eating this world’s stale bread. Not to worry! God has not left us alone in this metamorphosis. “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the strength to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name,” John 1 Conversations Within” ts 12/17/2015

“O Holy Night!” Placide Cappeau de Roquemaure

We all have romantic notions about the birth of Jesus and well we should. But we would do well to remember that His birth, the star filled night, the angels singing, his humble entrance into our world was also an act of great sacrifice on His part. God was sending His son into harms way, into a world in rebellion, to people who would reject and crucify Him. O Holy Night indeed! ~“He came unto his own, and his own received him not.”  Conversations Within” ts 12/16/2015

“Even the darkest night will end and the sun will rise.” Victor Hugo

Each of the seven days of creation began with the coming of night. We are told that the Lord gives His counsel even at night. The angels keep watch at night. The Artist of creation paints the portrait of His redemptive love in sending us Jesus at night. He has made night, in all its forms, the backdrop of the day of Jesus who is the Morning Star rising in our hearts. If you are in the darkness of some night, remind your heart of these precious words.  ~”O God...Yours is the day, yours also the night.” Ps.74 Conversations Within” ts 12/15/2015

“Silent night, Holy night all is calm all is bright.” Franz Xaver Gruber

Jesus was probably not born in the month of December but His arrival into our world was surely at night, and in more ways than one. He entered the night of our fallen world in order to become its light. He has brought the light of love to overcome the darkness of selfishness. He leads us out of the darkest night of sorrow and worry into the brightest day of joy and peace.  ~”In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The only thing standing between me and the man I want to be, is the man that I am.

To become the man I want to be, the man that I am must surely die. I am not speaking about my physical demise, but dying every day to things that will never give me lasting happiness. Of course we must do more than just die to what robs, we must embrace those activities which bring love to us. ~”I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” Gal.2 Conversations Within” ts 12/12/2015

“The chief cause of failure and unhappiness is trading what you want most for what you want now.” Zig Ziglar

When we are able, we always do what we want the most at that moment. My dilemma has always been how to keep what I want most in life at the forefront of my list of desires, to make sure that what I want now is what I really want most. The Christian answer for this dilemma rests in one word: grace!  It is grace that enables us to “cast down every imagination and every thought that exalts itself against the knowledge of God and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.” 2Cor.10 Conversations Within” ts 12/11/2015

“It is not willingness to know, but willingness to do (obey) God's will that brings certainty.” Eric Liddell

We become what we do and do and do. The other day I stopped by a friends house to pick something up. It was one of the few occasions when I drive alone. When I got back in the car, without thinking, I went to the passenger side to get in. Brenda has been driving so long and I am so used to riding as a passenger I could only laugh at myself. I was also in a conversation with Father about being more like Jesus. His quiet voice said, “You will see lasting change when doing what I tell you becomes as second nature as what you just did.”  Conversations Within” ts 12/10/2015

“In partnership, the result is harmony, respect, love, and an explosion of creativity and joy.” Marc Allen

The partnership that God offers each of us is the mutual enjoyment of life together. He has pledged Himself to provide all we need to accomplish this. I think the reason He wants us to ask for this “daily bread” is to deepen both our faith in Him and also fine tune our knowledge of all that His wants to give us. ~“If you abide in me and my words abide in you, ask whatever you want and it will be given to you.” Jesus Conversations Within” ts 12/9/2015

“Your job is not to figure out if someone deserves something.Your job is to lift the fallen, to restore the broken, and to heal the hurting.” Joel Osteen

I am so very grateful that God has been immeasurably kind to me even though both of us know I do not deserve it. I suppose that we should remember this anytime we wonder if we should give assistance to people who will not, for whatever the reason, help themselves. Blaming people for the predicament they have gotten themselves into is not loving them. If love is anything, it is without condition, and motivated purely by a desire to benefit everyone, regardless of what they have or have not done. Love is its own reason. ~”As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” Jesus  Conversations Within” ts 12/5/2015

If we would see positive transformation in our character, we must stop blaming, or making excuses, and take responsibility for our lives. The grace that God gives does not stop with forgiveness. It moves beyond it to enable us to see real and lasting change in the way we behave. Blaming others, even blaming ourselves will not correct what is wrong. There is a big difference in taking the blame for something and in assuming responsibility for it. "When you blame others, you give up your power to change." - Robert Anthony

The other day Brenda and I took our lab Maggie for a walk in the park. Half way through the walk Maggie starting giving us that look that said, “I need to go to the bathroom.” I immediately asked Brenda why we didn’t have anything to clean up after her. No sooner than I said it, I remembered this week that I have been reflecting on blaming others. The simple fact of the matter is that we often blame others because we do not want to take responsibility for our own lack of responsibility. ~“How can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when there is the log in your own eye?” Jesus Conversations Within” ts 12/2/2015

I am not surprised when people blame God for bad stuff; I have done so myself. It is easy for me to play the blame game when something doesn’t go my way. I have found this to be true in a good many families. I am saddened by the times I blamed my wife for lost keys, lights left on, and other insignificant inconveniences. Of course blaming somebody has significant consequences and will often strain relationships. “If there is an itch one does want to scratch: but it is much nicer to have neither the itch nor the scratch. As long as we have the itch of self-regard we shall want the pleasure of self-approval.” C. S. Lewis

We covet so many things. A good many of them are downright bad for us. Most of the time it is the pursuit of some pleasure that gets us into trouble. God imparts joy to put the last touches on pleasures when they are rightly taken from His hand. We would be wise to choose nothing that offers pleasure, yet has no joy in it.  Pleasure should add to our joy instead of stealing from it. ~“At your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” Ps.16 Conversations Within” ts 11/29/2015

"But if it be a sin to covet honour, I am the most offending soul alive." - William Shakespeare

We are told to never covet some things, but to earnestly covet others. Everyone of us, when we are able, go after what we desire most. If we want real and lasting happiness, it would be wise to feed those desires which promote it, and put to death those that will take it away. A good question to ask ourselves might be, “If I do what I want right now, will it hurt or help what I really want in the long run?” ~”But covet earnestly the best gifts.” 1Cor.12 Conversations Within” ts 11/27/2015

Lust hungers only to take; love only to give.

It is at the level of our desires that God directs us to put our energies, not just our actions. The reason is that we eventually become what we think about. It is not enough to never steal from my neighbor, we are also told to not entertain even the desire to do so. Love strips the power from such desires. ~"The leech has two daughters. 'Give! If we would know joy's contentment, we must learn to embrace, and not resent the boundaries that are placed over us.

We experience contentment when we are satisfied with God, and give HIm thanks for all He has provided for us in the present moment. “We are ever striving after what is forbidden, and coveting what is denied us.” Ovid

The fact that people want what is forbidden speaks to the self-centered condition of our hearts.  The wings of love can help us soar above the gravity of such selfishness, but it seems we will never escape its pull on us in this life. It is not a sin to seek what is best for yourself, but being selfish isn't the way to go about it. ~ “Create in me a pure heart O God.” Psalm 51 Conversations Within” ts 11/24/2015

“A wise man cares not for what he cannot have.” George Herbert

We could also say that a wise man cares not for what he should not have. I mean, it is frustrating to want what you cannot have, but it can be fatal  to want what you should not have. The best way to avoid such temptations is to address them at the level of our desires, and want only those things which bring us lasting happiness. ~“Thou shalt not covet.” Exodus 20  Conversations Within” ts 11/23/2015

“What separates privilege from entitlement is gratitude.” Brene Brown

What a privilege it is to return a favor to someone who has done so much for you! And, who has done more for us than God the Father? Is there any favor we could rightly deny Him? How could we not forgive even our enemies when He has forgiven us so much.  “Be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.” Col.3 Conversations Within” ts 11/22/2015

“If the grass is greener on the other side maybe God is asking you to water the grass on your side.” Nate

Sometimes the color of the grass is simply a matter of how much time we take to appreciate it. Do I appreciate how good I have it. Forget comparisons--both of those who have less and those who have more. Be where “you” are, and give thanks for what “you” have. “Do not regret growing older. It is a privilege denied to many.” Unknown

To see something as a privilege is often a matter of being given another perspective. Service is regarded by some to be a burden, but for others it is the joy of life. The eyes of the soul determine how we view life. A heart of gratitude helps us appreciate the rose, not complain about the thorn. For now, Father has decided thorns are necessary. As His children, learning to appreciate this is a privilege. ~”For you have been given the privilege of serving Christ, not only by believing in him, but also by suffering for him.” Phil.1 Conversations Within” ts 11/19/2015

1 Universe, 9 Planets, 204 Countries, 809 Islands, 7 Seas, and I had the privilege to meet you.” Unknown.

When we view life from the perspective of privilege, a humble appreciation warms all of our interactions. This is especially true where people are concerned. To be married to my spouse, and be the father to my children, and a friend to my friends are all a wonderful part of the privilege of living. I am grateful for opportunity to know, love and serve them. A grateful heart will transform burdens into blessings and problems into privilege.

I hate squatting down to pick up something. I dislike stooping so much that my wife tries to put everything I use at eye level so I do not have to bend over to get it. God is teaching me to change some of my ridiculous attitudes. Gratitude is teaching me what a privilege it is to be able to bend down and pick up something. Not only that, it is beneficial for my health to stay flexible. There is privilege in just about everything. ~”In everything give thanks.”   Conversations Within” ts 11/17/2015

There is great value in possessing one’s heart in patience, and in having a sense of humor--not taking oneself or life too seriously. Learn to smile when others provoke you. Turn provocation into privilege. One way we show our appreciation of God’s patience and pardon, is being grateful for the privilege of offering both to others when they rub us the wrong way. ~“A person's wisdom yields patience; it is to one's glory to overlook an offense.” Prov.19 Conversations Within” ts 11/16/2015

“Don't confuse visibility with credibility.” Harvey Mackay

Credibility is an important part of usefulness. Am I a trustworthy person? Have I earned the respect of the people in my life so that they value my help enough to ask for it? We can hurt our credibility when we focus on matters that matter little, and fail to attend to matters that matter most. Our credibility is often measured by our priorities. Love helps us arrange them properly. ~“And I will show you a still more excellent way.” 1Co.12 ESV Conversations Within” ts 11/13/2015

How sad it is to be in a position to influence positive change, but be unable to do so because we have lost our credibility. A large part of our effectiveness is not only position, but also being trusted. God positions people to work good.  It is sad to be out of position and miss an opportunity to promote goodness. “No one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of another.” Charles Dickens

It is generally considered unwise to let people use or abuse you. It is also unloving. How so? If we consistently allow people to take advantage of us, we are encouraging them to ultimately lose in the sight of God. A wise love should guide our interactions. Not warm fuzzy feelings mind you, but calculated actions which seek only to give others some real and lasting benefit. “It's not about you!” Rick Warren

One of the best attitudes we can nurture is simply teaching ourselves to let go of the selfish notion that we are the center of our world. Life is more than me, my and mine. “The only difference between a good day and a bad day is your attitude.” Dennis S Brown.

We may question the truthfulness of this assertion, especially on days when something bad happens to us. Certainly not everything that happens to us is good, but if we believe, as we should, that God is able to work good out of everything that happens to us, then it is faith, not frustration, that can shape our attitude about life. Attitude coupled with faith can change even a bad day into a good one. ~ “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” Rom.8 Conversations Within” ts 11/10/2015

“An adventure is only an inconvenience rightly considered.” G.K. Chesterton

I suppose some of the most interesting adventures in life begin as some inconvenience. Something springs up that interrupts your plans for the day, and what do you know, with the right attitude an adventure begins. This point was driven home to me one day when my back went out. I could do little but lay on the floor of our tiny camper. We cancelled our plans for the day and Brenda and I spent the next several hours figuring out how we could get me off the floor on to the couch. We laughed about it, and I screamed out loud more than few times, but on the whole we had a good adventure, one which taught us a great deal about how to approach a problem one step at a time and with a smile. ~”God is able to work all things together for good.” Rom.8 Conversations Within” ts 11/6/2015

There is good reason we are told to listen and learn. Open the ears, not the mouth. Be ever the listener and nurture a teachable spirit. We never arrive where learning is concerned. “To live will be an awfully big adventure.” Peter Pan

Am I living an abundant life? The word that Jesus used, describes the kind of life whose value is beyond measure. Does this describe the quality of my relationships, my responsibilities, my recreations, and fruitful use of my resources? Every decision we make either adds to the quality of life or takes from it. “Forever is composed of nows.” Emily Dickinson

This day is just one day of that eternal life that Jesus has promised. Do not fail to live in it. Eternal life does not begin the moment we die, but the moment we start to live by trusting all that God is for us in Christ. He gives life to all who do; eternality is just one aspect of that life. And why does God give us the gift of forever? Because it will take an eternal life to discover all that God desires to be for those who love Him. ~ “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.” Jesus  Conversations Within” ts 10/31/2015

To practice the presence of God is the essence of real life--of living in the now.

If I am to open the gift of the present, I must surely wake to God, for He has declared Himself to be the great “I Am”. All existence exists in Him, by Him, and for Him. This surely means that we all find our highest purpose in knowing, loving, and experiencing His goodness. We practice His presence when we wake to the present moment just as we wake to the present moment when we wake to Him. ~“And God said to Moses,  "I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: 'I AM has sent me to you.'" Exo.3 Conversations Within” ts 10/30/2015

“Solvitur ambulando, It is solved by walking” St. Jerome

How I have loved the simple pleasure of walking. I have never once gone for a walk that it did not work some grace in me. I am certain the reason for this has a great deal to do with the fact that I always wake to God’s presence when I do. He has never once failed to show up when I start walking. I feel so alive when I am walking with Someone so alive. I love how He calls attention to all the little things that work in me a childish delight. All my concerns look different after a walk with You. ~“And Enoch walked with God” Gen.5 Conversations Within” ts 10/29/2015

"There's no greater lifestyle and no greater happiness than that of having a continual conversation with God." —Brother Lawrence

I suppose praying is how one begins to “practice the presence of God.” But certainly it should be prayer in the sense of a conversation, not just when we prattle on and on only about what interests us. We should listen to God when we speak to Him, and do what He tells us to do. I would think that doing things together with Him, not just talking about them, is the very essence of friendship with Him. ~“If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love.” Jesus Conversations Within” ts 10/28/2015

“A little knowledge of God is worth more than a great deal of knowledge about him.” J. I. Packer

It is one thing to know about God and an entirely different thing to actually experience Him. After all, would you want to ride in a plane with someone who knows a great deal about flying or with someone who has actually flown a plane? Knowledge about someone is not the same as knowledge of someone. God offers to anybody and everybody the opportunity to know Him. ~“So let us know, let us press on to know the Lord. “Faith is not knowledge of an object, but communion with it.” Nicolás Gómez Dávila

We find value in devotional practices like reading Scripture, praying, going to a church gathering, or communion only when participating in them is in fact a true communion of our soul with God. We may do all these things religiously and still miss actual communion with Him. If you have ever been hugged or kissed by your spouse only to hear them ask, “Where are you,” you know it is possible to be somewhere without actually being there. ~“And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” Jesus Conversations Within” ts 10/24/2015

We find value in devotional practices like reading Scripture, praying, going to a church gathering, or communion only when participating in them is in fact a true communion of our soul with God. We may do all these things religiously and still miss actual communion with Him. It is easy to idolize the means to an end such that we get stuck on the means, and consequently never reach the end.

Devotion should never belong to things, but to people. If I become devoted to my work, it is surely a waste of time unless it's fruit benefits those I love. Many marriages have been lost because of devotion to one’s job. Similarly, do not be devoted to activities like reading the Bible or going to church unless they are expressions of your devotion to God. ~"These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.” Is.29 Conversations Within” ts 10/23/2015
