Freedom comes to us a choice at a time as does slavery.

“Do not harden your heart.” Heb.3
Every choice has consequences; probably not the least of which is that we incline our heart to make the same choice the next time similar circumstances arise. Every time I refuse some prompting of my conscience to do right, it will get easier and easier to choose wrong. Hard hearts are fashioned this way. Thank God it works the other way as well. Every good choice can incline us to do right until doing what is good and right and true is second nature. It is called second nature because our first nature is usually to be selfish. Sometimes the best way to be where you are is to pay attention to where have been and where you are going.

"First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift.” Jesus
Some have said that the present is all there is simply because you cannot change the past and the tomorrow hasn’t come. Certainly worrying about the past or future is a waste of time. But assigning some of the present to correct past mistakes or to prepare for the future is wise. The trick is to not allow either to rob you of the joy of the present. Sometimes the past catches up to us if we have not lived responsibly and restitution is needed. Sometimes the future will catch us unprepared so we should prepare. Reduce life down to this moment, give your full attention to now. Let your every decision be your next right step. Some have quit smoking by simply saying, “I will not smoke now.” Surely there are hundreds of things which we know are bad for us which could complete that sentence. What are you going to do now? Now is all that counts anyway. Move through the day one moment at a time, be where you are! Be fully where you are and fully committed only to goodness. Why wait for the new year to make changes; why wait at all?

If you believe something is good and right and true, why wait to do it. Don’t put off eating right or exercise or quitting some bad habit until after the first of the year. Do it today. Do it now. Never put off doing good. Do not delay doing what is right. Acclimate yourself toward actions you believe to be true. It is those who do who are counted wise, not those who plan to do. The Spirit of Christmas is none other than the Holy Spirit sent to live in us as the gift of Christ. He of course does not come to visit us at Christmas time but to take up residence in us throughout the years appointed to us on this earth. His presence in us is intended to be Christ’s continuing presence in the world. We are His hands that heal, his heart that loves, His eyes which cry, His ears that listen, His mouth that smiles. As my body and its actions is the physical expression of my soul, so too are we His body--the physical expression of Jesus to a world that needs to be loved. Let our celebration of His first coming ready us for His next.

This morning I rise with a deadline. I must check out of my cabin by 10 AM which means there are certain things I must accomplish before this can happen. The Second Coming of Christ is likewise a very real deadline and while we are not given a specific time, there are certain things which must be done in preparation for it. We are told to live expectantly--to live in such a manner that when He comes we will not be ashamed but be found doing the work that He has left us to do. What is that work? In the end I think we will be surprised by all that God has done, not only in answer to our prayers but by His own proactive expressions of love. What continues to amaze me is that even though He knows what sins we will commit tomorrow He remains steadfast in His love for us today. Even things which I questioned at the time He has answered--sometimes years later. I realize that what I thought was bad was actually the best thing He could have done for me. No doubt that God uses the unexpected. When things pop up and interrupt our lives we often turn to Him for help, guidance and comfort. Sometimes we blame Him and turn to Him in anger. No matter. If we are looking in God’s direction the unexpected has us at least looking where we need to look and God will use it. Don’t be surprised by what should be expected.

“Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you.” 1Pet.4
Some things are best if they are expected. Common experience teaches us that we should expect hardship in life. God has evidently decided that trials are necessary for our development. Most people know that they are more than the body that perishes but we rarely embrace all that this means. We fear things which threaten our physical existence but fail to take into account dangers that can destroy the soul. We hold on so tightly to this life but neglect to invest in the next. I will survive my death but how will I fare in that life that follows it. How firmly do I believe in the afterlife? A dying man once wrote a letter to a friend. He began, “I am still in the land of the living,” but stopped and started again. I find it interesting that the first king of Israel was out looking for a couple of lost donkeys when he discovered that he had been chosen to be the first King. There is a good measure of comfort when we know that God can use the smallest detail of our lives to direct our steps into His purposes. Unscheduled stops are often viewed as an inconvenience but may wind up being divine detours. In any case, it is better to be focused than frustrated. There is more to life than just this life which means there should be more to life than just the concerns of this life. Money and material possessions are a means to, not the end of our life purpose. And what is the purpose of life? According to Jesus it is to love God and be loved by Him. This circle of love is certain to overflow in loving others. We love God by doing what He commands and we also are loved by God when we do what He commands. Am I a good friend? I think the measure of this is not only how I feel about my friends but how I act towards them. Am I a source of goodness to them? When Jesus said that He prefers to have friends rather than servants he was not saying that friends do not serve each other but the reasons behind their service is different. He does not want slaves, employees, taxpayers or mercenaries. He is looking for friends. It is the very nature of a friend to look out for the interest of the ones they love. Being an optimist does not necessarily mean that you are not being a realist. We can be grateful to God even when we prepare for lean or difficult times. To me, showing gratitude is what it means to be positive--not some silly, deluded notion that denies that there will be tough times, but the faith that God uses them when they come to work character in us. That is surely something for which we should be grateful. The hope that the Scriptures speak so often about is the certain expectation that God works all things together for good. Learning how to motivate yourself is probably one of the most important skills we can acquire. Learning how to counsel yourself in such a manner that you take your own counsel is one key to successful and positive change. Learn how to talk to yourself in the most persuasive way. The idea is to do it consistently not just when a crisis comes. This way when the crisis comes you know how to deal with yourself. I recently read where a good friend said, “Attitude can make the waves even more fun.” It was on a local surf report and I realized the truth of it even as I read it. If you think the waves that day look fun they probably will be. If you don’t; they won’t. How true this is of most things in life. If we have to acquire a taste for things which are good for us in the here and now, it should come as no surprise to us that the joys of Heaven are an acquired taste. I believe Heaven is a real place but I also believe it is a state of mind--an attitude. If we are not made into different people, people who possess this attitude, then it will not matter how beautiful Heaven is; we will not be happy there without it. We must be different, not just moved to a different place. What is this attitude? If you tie exercise to something you love to do you will probably exercise.

One bit of wisdom is learning to love what you do, not just do what you love. Learning to love what you do may require a little creative energy. I do not relish doing taxes, but since I have to do them, I am learning to enjoy myself while I do them. The old adage "Whistle while you work” is still a good reminder to find the fun in what you have to do. Put on some music, dress up, drink a cup of java or add whatever to enrich your experience. I have almost decided that if I don't want to do something, there is a good chance that I should be doing it.

Eating right, exercise and most spiritual activities are all disciplines because they require discipline to practice them. This is true for just about everything that is good for us. Guilt is a poor motivation for giving. It is far better to give food to starving children because you are motivated by simple love for them instead of feeling guilty that you have and they do not. God does not want to fling a guilt trip on us so we will give. He wants us to share His joy--the joy that comes from the overflow of a grateful heart. Some might argue that starving children do not care about our motives just that they have something to eat. But giving from guilt never lasts while giving from gratitude seeks a lasting presence. What shall I render to the LORD for all his benefits to me? Ps.116
There is no way to measure God’s value to those who trust Him, but we experience more of it every time we give thanks to Him for something. We should not fall into the guilt trap of trying to repay God for His goodness. That is not the kind of relationship He wants with us. The best way to express thanks to God, beyond saying so, is to take what He gives and use it. We know a child appreciates the gift of a bicycle when they ride it. When it comes down to it we are all gardeners seeking the fruit of plentiful harvest. God is no less a gardener and He too seeks fruit for His work in our lives. The fruit He seeks is the transformation of His love working in us and flowing from us. How much fruit will he glean from my life? That will be the bottom line when we attend His Thanksgiving feast. A stroll in any grocery store is enough reason to rejoice over our inheritance. I say inheritance because none of us chose the place of our birth--our national citizenship is a bequest outside our control. We could have been born in famine lands, starving, with no means to secure goods for ourselves or our family. The next time you start feeling sorry for yourself, or struggle being content, take a hard look at what really surrounds you. Gratitude is the death of grumbling and greed. Sometimes all we have are strong feelings that well up within us. Even so, that wholeness of God that dwells in us--the Scriptures call Him the Spirit, He enters into our feelings and translates them into Heaven’s language. And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. Rom.8
We may wonder why, if God is so good, the world is often so very bad. The Christian answer to this is that God has created people with the freedom to make good or bad choices because this is the only way real love can exist. The wonder of it all is that God is so very good that He can work good even out of our bad decisions. The struggle we experience when we must choose what is good over what is bad often becomes the very means that deepens our faith and then our love for God. Some times the best way God can protect us is to not always protect us. .

To overcome is to be overjoyed by accomplishment. This is why God does not always protect us from conflict. He does not raise spoiled children but strong children. By allowing us to experience tribulation He is developing the spiritual muscles needed to mature a strong character. The best way for God to protect us is to not always protect us. When God created the world He made it so much more than functional. He added extras. He garnished fields and forests with color, even though black and white would have worked. He installed surround sound on ocean shores and mountain brooks. He put icing on the the cake of nutrition making foods not only good for us but rich with flavor. He dressed the world in the finery of flowers and our night sky with the magic of moonlight. I still don’t get it when I foolishly think other people’s sins are somehow worse than my own or that my standing with God has anything to do with anything other than grace. God loves people not because they are good or better than others, and any religion that teaches that we must be good to be loved by God has missed the obvious truth that nobody measures up--no one’s good is good enough. I suppose some people gravitate toward praise just as some do toward complaint. I find in myself and to my disappointment, that I am often the latter. When I do, it is a bitter herb I add to my soup. I am grateful that God is not leaving me to such a negative disposition but encourages me all of the time to walk on the positive side of life. He is teaching me the skill of praise—to first see His hand in everything and everyone, and then gratefully know the quality of each and every interaction as a gift from Heaven. If we utter the words, “Praise the Lord,” and by it we are ascribing to God the glory in some experience---say, the birth of a child---that surely is an offering of praise. When we see the sun rise over the ocean and immediately think “Boy, can you paint”, we are expressing praise for His skill and artistry. The thought, “Boy, can you paint” simply fleshes out our praise. We praise when we see something of value and feel in ourselves the need to appreciate it. Thank God for pleasure; it is one of the joys of life. Eating, sex, play, even satisfying work are all precious gifts. It is unlawful pleasures that are forbidden because they steal joy and weigh us down with guilt. This is the reason there is no joy in lust, we are left pillaged by the very pleasures we would steal. We were told to not play around with fire; the same could be said of desire .

People lust over any number of things, power, money, fame, and of course sex. The very nature of lust is to want what we do not have and have it without restraint. There is of course nothing wrong with natural desires so long as they are made to serve us rather than we them. Like fire in a fireplace, controlled desires can bring warmth, light and pleasure to our lives. But let that same fire out into your house and it will burn it to the ground. “He will have no fear of bad news; his heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD.” Ps.112 NIV God offers us a life that may not be free from bad news but one that can be immune to the fear of it. There is a place deep in the heart of faith that radiates a peace that transcends understanding. The eye that looks intently on all that God is for those who love and trust him is full of the light of hope no matter how dark the world around them. “I have set the LORD always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.” Ps.16 If I really believe that God’s love for me is without limit and His ability to watch over me has no bounds, then what do I have to fear? I believe both of these things yet I often lose my focus, especially in a crisis. When this happens fear steals the joy in my heart. The key then is to set the Lord always before me-- to take my focus off of my circumstances and fix my hope entirely on His love and power. Reviewing His promises helps with this. Grace is meant to be used not abused.

Rom.6 To ask for God’s forgiveness knowing full well that you intend to continue doing the very thing that needs His forgiveness, is like asking for help but refusing it when it comes. God’s forgiveness is only one step and a necessary step at that, to help move us closer to Him. The grace that comes to us in His forgiveness is part of His abiding presence and persistence to rescue us from the prison of selfishness and to lead us into the light of freedom. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more... Rom.5 I am surrounded by grace. Who isn’t? There is no way to measure all that God is and desires to be for us. I am overwhelmed every time I go into a grocery store at the abundance of food that is ours. He provides not just what is needed, but more. Only in eternity will we understand how He has stood watch over our lives. His protection is unmatched. I have never been alone in my life. John 1 I am glad You are full of grace as much as truth dear Jesus because truth alone would condemn a liar like me. It is grace when you tell me the truth not only about life but tell me the truth about me. And, you graciously follow the grace which tells me I am fallen with more grace to raise me up. The word luck is often confused with the word blessed.

I think what they are trying to say is that they realize that some good things have come to them outside of any effort on their part. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, Eph.2 Whenever we see an act of kindness, or someone forgiving another who has hurt them, or compassion being expressed toward those in need, it is not so much an expression of human goodness as it is evidence of divine grace working in people. Song of Solomon 2:15 What good is a big decision to do something if I make the small decision to put it off till tomorrow. A tiny splinter or small blister can hinder your progress and small sins can keep you from knowing God. “Today if you hear His voice do not harden your heart.” Heb.3 Let me certainly take responsibility for the choices I have made but especially for the choices I will make. This means thinking things through before you choose. Visualize the power of a single choice and not just its immediate consequences but also how it will incline future decisions. If I say no to some prompting of God’s Spirit in me it will certainly have consequences--probably not the least of which will be how much easier it will be to refuse Him next time He moves me. The freedom to choose may be lost by the choices we make.

“But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.” Gen.3 (Spoken to Cain before He murdered his brother Able.) If I decide that I will not forgive someone I may lose the ability to do so. Over time repeatedly refusing to forgive can lock us in a prison of bitterness. If I delay the choice to get over a past injury, it may fester into a lifelong illness. If I hold on to some hurt, the hurt may hold on to me and never let go. We can lose our freedom and make ourselves slaves by repeating bad decisions. An addict used to be someone who had the freedom to say no or to refuse that second drink or forgive an insult.
