That God speaks to us in our thoughts is no less real than our thoughts themselves. The key is learning not to confuse His thoughts with our own. When I wonder if I am doing this, I just ask Him to make it clear; He always does.There are certainly times when God speaks and leaves no room for doubt that He is the One speaking.
