The Point of no Return

“Seek the LORD while He may be found, Call upon Him while He is near.” Is55.6 NKJV

There are many phrases that come to us from the world of literature which depict what has been called “the point of no return.” Caesar’s “crossing the Rubicon,” “the die is cast,” and “burning bridges,” all refer to a point at which going back is no longer possible. Many times this “point of no return,” is decided in the soul long before it is manifest in ones actions. In the recent Harry Potter books, the young hero Harry, calls for the villain Voldemort to repent and show remorse over his wicked ways, but it is clear to everyone that the dark wizard not only will not, but that he cannot. The deceitfulness of sin has blinded his eyes and he has gone past the point of no return. Pointedly, his destruction comes to him by his own hands.
I think the many warnings given to us in Scripture tell us that we should repent, before we are unable to do so. It is then not so much that God refuses forgiveness, as it is the inability of the hardened heart to ask for or receive it. 10/5/07 ts
