We could shorten Buddha's encouragement and simply ask, “is it necessary” to say something? Usually if it is necessary, my words will probably be both true and kind. It is a kindness to tell someone something when they need to hear it. But just because something is true does not make it kind nor necessary to say it. What determines if something needs to be said?
