There are many ways to express confidence before God. Some of them are good, and some not so good. I believe that the Father wants us to be confident of our standing with Him, but only insofar that we stand on solid ground. He directs us to stand on the accomplishments of Christ on our behalf, rather that standing on our own feeble accomplishments. One is standing on a rock, the other on sinking sand.
