Shepherds are chosen to hear of Jesus’ birth perhaps because they keep watch over flocks and part of Christ’s principal message reminds us that we are our brother’s keeper.

“And there were shepherds keeping watch over their flocks at night.” Luke 2

Much is said in the Good Book about keeping watch. It is easy to be lulled to sleep and forget that one of the reasons we are put here is to care for others.The Christmas story was told first to shepherds and what is a shepherd but one who keeps watch over those who need watching.
