Happiness is more a result than a pursuit. We get happiness not by chasing it but by having it follow in the wake of love, both giving and receiving it. But are we chasing happiness if we do good to others in order to get it? This is just the point Christ is making when He sanctions reward. There is nothing wrong with wanting to be happy; just in the silly and selfish ways we try to get it. Remember James S. Hewett’s story about happiness being in a dog’s tail.
