Are you having a good day? Give thanks for it. Are you having a bad day? Give thanks in it as well--not because it is a bad day, but because God is able to work all things for our good. God has not told us to give thanks for everything but in everything. The root of plants grow deeper under duress just as faith can deepen when we are having a tough go of things.
