We should not confuse avoiding extremes with having no passion for life. We may be passionate about something, even extremely so, and still let wisdom guide us. I want to give myself wholly to whatever I do and bring all my faculties to bear doing it. This means engaging my mind, my will and my emotions; in other words, my whole heart.
