Jesus often said that those who have ears to hear should listen. Listening to your mentor is of course the first exercise of a disciple. I think one reason why Jesus used this expression so often is that humans generally prefer listening to words that affirm what they think, do and feel, rather than to words that offer corrections of them. Surely it is a divine grace to listen to those things we need to hear instead of listening only to what we want to hear, and, since it is, we should humbly ask God for it. 11/3/2008 ts
