“But God's firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: ‘The Lord knows those who are his,’ and, ‘Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.’” 2Tim2.19 ESV
Just as there are two sides to the same coin, so there are two sides to the workings of the Christian experience. One side bears the seal of God’s choice in sovereign grace, the other the seal of man’s choice with a liberated will. Not only does the Lord know those who are His, those He has known choose willingly to depart from iniquity.” Before all time, God has known those who are to wed His blessed Son. Did not Jesus tell us, “All that the Father gives to me will come to me…?” Why did God choose us but that we should be holy and blameless before Him and that He might give to Christ a spotless bride. We know those whom Christ has called to be His precious bride when they put on the wedding dress of purity. Here the human response is wed to sovereign grace, here man lovingly chooses God who has lovingly chosen him. The seal of sovereign grace is necessary because without it, no one would ever come to Christ. The seal of human choice follows because love must be freely given if it is to be love at all.
