I think one aspect of positively adapting to ever changing circumstances, is to express self-control in response to them. Our inner life, not the circumstances around us, should determine how we behave. This will enable us to bring goodness into whatever situation we find ourselves, rather than allowing our circumstances to affect something bad in us. Just as we can adapt to darkness not by sitting in it, but by bringing light to it, we can adapt to things like hostility with kindness.
