Jesus taught that true love does not envy or boast. When Hezekiah was showing off his treasure, he was not only boasting, he certainly wasn’t loving his children or nation. Years later, enemies enticed by the treasure, would invade and enslave Israel, all because Hezekiah was strutting his feathers. Envy looks at what others have; boasting says look at what I have. Both of these actions fill the air with the stench of selfishness. Bragging is one of those things that bring about the exact opposite of what it seeks to do. One who brags seeks admiration but no one admires a braggart. On the other hand, true love gives itself away, and finds joy in return. 1/9/2009 ts
