“But they were silent and answered him not a word…” Is.36.21 ESV
There are times when the mature thing to say is to say nothing at all--silence can express so much. I would think this proper when someone scorns our faith in God. I am not referring to sincere questions about faith, mind you, but supercilious ones. Didn’t Christ remain silent before those who mocked Him? We have heard it said that some things should not be dignified with a response. This is just another way of saying that the answer to a silly question would be a silly answer. Our faith in God appears silly when we get into juvenile arguments about it. The louder someone gets in the defense of something, the easier it is to wonder, not only if its true but if they themselves believe it. After all, when was the last time you heard someone loudly arguing that two plus two are four. A mature faith in God is like a well-traveled highway. You don’t argue that I-20 leads from Birmingham to Atlanta when you just traveled it this morning. 1/6/2009 ts
