“Leave yourself room to maneuver.” “Keep your options open.” “Don't box yourself in.” All of these cliches pass down to us the wisdom of avoiding decisions that hem us into an irreversible and potentially irrecoverable situation. Cutting your hand off is an irreversible decision. You may be able to recover from it by learning to use the other hand but not without real loss. Sometimes irreversible decisions are unavoidable and sometimes burning some bridges is even desirable, but on the whole it is better to take time with a permanent decision.
