“E.F. Hutton says….”

“And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:” Mt.5.2

One popular translation leaves out the phrase, “And he opened his mouth.” The translators probably thought that it redundant because one usually opens their mouth when they teach. But I think Matthew was being deliberately redundant when he recorded these opening words of the Sermon on the Mount. I believe he was trying to capture the magical atmosphere surrounding Jesus. He was saying that every head was turned and every eye was fixed on the very lips of this unique teacher. They were hung on his every word and so should we be. Jesus once asked His disciples if they really wanted to be his followers, Peter answered, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” 10/30/2009 Conversations Within ts
