One vivid scene in the movie Pirates of the Caribbean shows Captain Barbossa taking a bite out of a juicy apple but because he is cursed, he is unable to enjoy its sweetness. Joy is the gift of God. He imparts it to put the last touches on pleasures, when they are rightly taken from His hand. Joy enables us to know pleasure with doubt, guilt or fear. Joy completes pleasure like childbirth completes a pregnancy. Pleasure without joy is to miscarry. Only the healed heart can experience pleasure as God intends. We may pursue pleasure but if God leaves joy out of it, to what end are pleasures pursued. It is like chewing without swallowing.
