When we are encouraged to to good to others one reason that is given, and without apology, is that we also serve ourselves. It not only benefits our neighbor, we do ourselves a good turn. Good is good no matter how it is served. God has tied our own goodness to the goodness of others. We cannot help but improve our own lives when we look to the interest of our neighbor. Nor does God mind this, in fact He is pleased when we seek goodness for ourselves. I think what bothers Him most is that we settle for things of less value instead of the supreme value that can be found only in the kind of life He prescribes.
