If life with God is glory then life without Him is poverty, the worst sort of poverty. This is why the first words of Jesus, in His first public sermon were, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.” We must first realize our poverty without God before we can truly discover the great wealth of returning to Him. The word that Jesus used for poor is literally one so poor that the only option available to them is to beg. The beggar holds an empty cup out to the hand that would fill it. Someone has said that you cannot fill hands already full. We are blessed when we know that our soul is impoverished and we beg from God His tender mercies and grace.
