To say the LORD is one is another way of saying there is one Lord. But it also affirms the oneness that is found in God and that is only found in Him. God is one in that He is perfectly whole and complete. He needs nothing, wants for nothing, He is perfect in all His perfections. He knows all there is to know, sees all that can be seen, decides all that is decided. Even our fallen choices are allowed under His sovereign rule, which says a great deal about the value He assigns choice. He is unified in perfect oneness and brings perfect unity to all that is made. All time and history, my personal history, the personal history of everyone and everything is given meaning and purpose in His eternal purposes even all the silly debates that men have about Him.
